GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

Universal just canceled Halloween Horror Nights on both coasts - that was a HUGE moneymaker for them and they were planning all along to go fwd with it and hinting about details to come until just recently...the sharp turnaround shocked many fans

As dead as the parks have been I imagine they were concerned they would not sell enough tickets to make it profitable. There will be lots of business decisions made that will cancel lots of events.

Not surprised. Those events are packed with a lot of young locals who get hammered. Not a good look during a pandemic. I would imagine that Halloween in general isn't going to happen. I'd be happy to put out a big bucket full of candy and watch the kids from a distance, but it wouldn't be safe to have a normal halloween.

I think that is a big part of it. Those parties are expensive and if they can't get enough people in to cover the fixed costs there is no point in going forward.

My dad’s friend flew back down to Florida last week. A few days ago my dad was talking to him and he was just diagnosed with COVID. He was absolutely 100% sure he caught it from a coughing lady that was sitting behind him on the flight. My dad said that his friend had minor symptoms and a slight cough. Well, today he died. My dad is devastated.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. OMG, that was so quick.

First I am sorry to hear your dad's friend died. Second IMO that shows that traveling isn't a good idea right now. That's why many didn't want parks to open. They may be safe but the problem lies in how people get there.

I'm so sorry about your father's friend truly truly sorry :(

I do want to say we should be careful in assuming this or that about people. My father-in-law just was diagnosed with mild asthma brought on by allergens and air quality and given an inhaler. He was tested for COVID-19 while he was at the doctor for a chest x-ray and it came back negative. This was Monday he was tested with the results coming back Wednesday. His cough is related to his asthma.

More and more airlines also require masks but I can understand being wary if someone was coughing without a mask on at that time.

I agree with you on Halloween. I keep trying to brainstorm ideas in my head on how I could make it semi normal for my younger two, but nothing seems safe. Which sucks because last Halloween was cancelled because of fires in our area (and poor air quality). Hopefully somebody comes up with a genius idea to make it work in some capacity.

I am so sorry for your family's loss.☹

He may or may not have contracted the virus while traveling. Masks are mandatory while flying. Just because someone has a cough (post nasal drip, asthma, G.E.R.D. influenza, common cold, bronchitis, etc.)...doesn't mean they have COVID. This highlights the importance of getting a flu shot.

True. He could have caught it anywhere. He worked for a prominent politician in our area.

I was 100% sure I caught COVID in February when I was in line for ROTR. I have never heard a woman cough so much in my life. She was the person in front of my and she wasn’t even covering up. I had minor symptoms but it could have been allergies. Took the antibodies test and it was negative.

Yeah unfortunately it's a rock and a hard place for people. Even I cringe when around my father-in-law (who is coughing into his mask or in his shirt the times that he is not needing a mask--like eating) because I'm thinking "oh gosh people must think he's sick and we're terrible people". To your story yeah that is gross at least try to cover up your cough :crazy2:

I do think there have been people who brushed off their symptoms as allergies when they were positive with COVID-19 (so it could have been both allergies and it or only COVID-19) so that's not to say it hasn't happened before.

Isn’t that the truth. Our governor was”caught” sitting Outdoors at his son’s baseball game with his mask pulled down. He was outside sitting apart from others. But you know, people have to criticize.
I do think some people are more susceptible to "trying to discredit" but I do think to everyday citizens they get frustrated sometimes when their local leaders don't walk the talk. You tell someone to wear a mask in public (normally with the additional when you are unable to social distance) and then you see them without a mask and well even if there could be a good reason for it (like your governor sitting away from other people) it can look a certain way to someone.

And I don't think it helps that people might see that baseball game and say "it doesn't matter if you are sitting away from people because of the shouting that can be involved, or how do we know you were wearing it when you left your seat, did someone get close to you, etc" and people aren't doing that particular thing because that person is your governor at that point, they are doing it because that's how they would see if it someone else was doing it, potentially labeling them a covidiot, or saying they were selfish and kids sports shouldn't even be going on right now, etc.

There's been a variety of examples where local leaders (governors, mayors, city officials, etc) who have engaged in behavior they tell their citizens not to do but they become caught in the public eye sometimes too closely and an instant impression is made when it's just a moment in time.

Oh my gosh that is absolutely devastating, your poor dad 😔.

Guess I haven't even worried about Halloween yet too far away, but overall in our neighborhood it wouldn't be hard to do and be fine and plus if schools are still in session I see even less worry. Schools are still planning on going back here next month.

Heartbreaking news. I'm so sorry for your Dad and his friend's family. My condolences.

I say the parents all do slow drive bys throughout the neighborhood... windows down with the kids in the car, in costume...we'll all hang out on our front lawns with halloween music blasting and toss the sealed candy into their cars from our front lawn. lol. It'll be one long parade.

Took the antibodies test and it was negative.

The anti-bodies test has such a high rate of failure it's practically worthless to rule out whether you were exposed or not. If it shows positive, it's very accurate, but a negative doesn't really give you much assurety that you didn't have it. My daughter was sure she had it too in late February, but tested negative as well. He Dr suggested multiple tests to rule out any false negatives, but she has yet to test again.
