GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

Wait! Are you trying to tell me that speaking loudly in a bar is more of a risk than making out? I call total BS on that. I dont have a study for it, but I stand by that making out is more of a risk than loud talking. Oh, and dont tell me that making out doesnt happen very often. It is very prevalent, especially at bar time. Prove me wrong!!
I guess the point is that talking can infect a whole table/booth of people in bar where as making out usually only infects one extra person. Usually.

You guys go to bars very different from those I frequent. lol But still, experts say the main reasons are what I said. Sure, if you drink to excess and your judgement is impaired, that's a contributor. And if any place knows about bars, it's got to be Wisconsin! lol

"“The highest risk environments would be indoors with poor air/HVAC systems, with an inability to maintain 6-foot spacing accompanied by loud talking or yelling without everyone wearing a mask,” Dr. Jeff Pothof, the chief quality officer at UW Health in Madison, Wisconsin, told Healthline. “The most common example would be a crowded bar with people having to speak loudly because of the noise and either unmasked or frequently removing the mask to eat or drink.”
Basically there are multiple risks in bars. They really shouldn't be open anywhere in the world right now. Unfortunately most are still open.

:rotfl: That's not how making outrageous claims works. The onus is on you to prove what you're claiming, not the other way around. :rolleyes2

outrageous?? What did I say that is outrageous? Outrageous is saying something like my father used to say..."He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark.

I didn't view the post as stating one position is a higher risk than the other, but merely expanding the position that there appears to be an enhanced risk in a bar setting given the environment. I see both posts/positions as completely valid and not one is > or < the other. :confused3

I live in Madison, WI and we had a HUGE outbreak when bars were open. Popular college bars opened up after the governor’s ‘safer staff home’ order was overturned and before local
orders were put in place. They were, as usual, packed with college kids who stayed for the summer.

One bar, called the Kollege Klub, had lines of kids waiting to get in with zero social distancing and no masks. Inside was no better. Apparently one of the bartenders had Covid, was tested, but came to work anyway while waiting for results. Over 200 students got sick as a result. I know one young man whose entire group of 10 roommates all got sick after going to the KK. It’s so bad that the kids are now calling it the “Covid Club”

Stories like this make me so glad I was never into the bar scene. Milwaukee really needs to follow Madison’s lead and close bars because a large percentage of the state’s cases are in Milwaukee County and the bars are probably a big factor. I’m still extremely angry about the overturning of the Governor's order and the immediate reopening of bars, and not having any semblance of a plan since.

173 deaths in Florida reported today which I think breaks their previous record which was around 150.

New cases back up above 10,000 at 10,239 (9732 yesterday) and percent positive for new cases back up to 12.31% (10.54% yesterday).

Number of new cases and percent positive is creeping back up again. 12,462 new cases today. 13.31% positive. 581 new hospitalizations which I believe is a record however they also had a lot of discharges in the last 24 hours so total hospitalizations for the 24 hour period are lower than yesterday's total which is good. Only other good number compared to yesterday is reported deaths which is lower at 135 today.

RE: Bars, our governor (Louisiana) said the main reason he closed them is because people hang out there for hours drinking and lose their inhibitions and forget about social distancing. It's not a 30-60 minute grocery trip or dining situation. It's prolonged contact.

wouldn’t call it creeping back up yet, need more days to see what the trend is.

I’ve been tracking Orange County specifically. Their seven-day moving average for new cases is down 33% from July 16 to July 23.

I convert the numbers to cases per million, as that makes it easier to compare apples to apples with other areas. Here is what Orange County looks like compared to Columbus, Ohio, my local touchstone:

512927

Obviously, I would love to see those numbers come down a bit before I decide to go in September. However, looking at it this way does help keep things in perspective.

even the good doctor doesn't follow the rules. doesn't Washington dc have a strict mask wearing policy. yikes!!!

That's interesting. It looks like Columbus has been pretty steady, while Orange County looks like a roller coaster. I sincerely hope the numbers both lower and even out for your trip. I cancelled an October trip so September would be too soon for me!

Assuming the two people next to him are from his household, I don't have a problem with this. They're outside and no one seems to be within 6' of them. Why do you have a problem?

Also, since he does have a mask, this looks more like a "gotcha" moment (someone looking for him to pull the mask down and snap the picture).

And there's a bottle of water in his lap, so he had probably just finished drinking and someone snapped the gotcha.
