I agree with Lisa about the splitting hairs issue of the distance between the GCH and DLH to and from the parks. Last summer we stayed in the Sierra (now Dreams) and the summer before we stayed at GCH. Being a disboarder and seeing so many threads on the distance factor of these two hotels I decided to do a bit of timing! From the time I left my room at the DLH to when I got to the Club Libby Lu store in DTD (which is by the entrance to the GCH on the DTD side) it was 4 minutes. Not much extra at all and that included my time spent waiting for an elevator etc. And when we stayed at the GCH and entered that Club Libby Lu entrance we had to walk through a lobby and then down an extremely long hallway to our room. So all that made me realize that due to the location of my room at the GCH I don't think in the end we saved much if any walking. Getting inside the hotel was quicker, but once in we had to walk quite a ways to get to our room. Its a very spead out hotel!
To me there are lots of factors on how long it really takes to get to your room at either hotel. If you just got off Grizzly River Run and are soaked, you will be very happy to be staying at the GCH! If you just got off Nemo and want to head back for a midday break, you can hop on the monorail thats right there and be back in your room at the DLH in no time. Since there are various ways to begin and end your day at DL and DCA there are lots of factors in how long it takes you to get back to either hotel. I think it all evens out in the end. One way or the other, you are going to walk regardless of which hotel you stay at.
So for me, I pick the one that has the theming that appeals and then let the distance factor chips fall where they may. I love all three onsite hotels and think they all have about equal pros and cons. You just have to find which pros fit your family the best. Distance is one of the factors but its not the only one and its not equal in that again, your room at either hotel may be located in a place that is very convenient or not. But it won't add or delete that many steps all said and done at either hotel. JMHO!
