GoofyinOhio's Journal - Comments Welcomed

Hey Chris! WTG on your first 5k!!!! You had an awesome time!!!!!

As for tips for running your first marathon, I have learned a few things over the past 6 months:

1. Find a training plan that you like and stick to it!! I followed the Hal Higdon plan for my half marathon that I ran in April, and I found it was so easy to make sure I got my runs in, because I felt like I had to be accountable and get them in. Since I don't start my "official" marathon training until September, I have found that it has been much harder to get those runs in without forcing myself to go on some days. And I truly believe it is because I am not following a formal training plan right now. So, find something that works, write it down and stick to it!

2. I see that you have already run a race, that is great. I have run a few races and each one has been better in terms of getting into a race pace, and all of the pre-race jitters, etc that go along with it. So, I would suggest trying to fit in some races prior to the marathon!

3. Last thing I can think of right now, listen to your body. If your body doesn't feel right, take it easy. There were times during my half training that I just didn't feel right, I took a day off and low and behold I kept myself pretty healthy. So, just listen to you body as much as possible to avoid injuries/illnesses!

Good Luck with your training--you are already doing a great job!! Keep up the good work.

You should check out the weekly training thread on the Events/Competition page--there is a really awesome group of people, most of which are training for the 07 WDW marathon/half marathon...and it is awesome to have such a great support group over there!!

OK So here we go.... Hope everyone is having a Great Summer!!!!!

July 10th - Ran 6.03 miles in 1 hour and 8 minutes.
July 11th - Walked 3.2 Miles in 45 Minutes.
July 12th - My first 7 miler. Went 7.19 Miles in 1 hour and 19 minutes.
July 13th - Walked 3 miles in 45 Minutes.
July 14th - Ran another 7.19 Miles in 1 hour and 16 Minutes.
July 15th - Ran my second 5k. This time with my wife and daughters there to watch. I started out pretty fast. For whatever reason I feel very competitive and haven't been able to hold back (I will be sighning up for more to learn to do this). Ran a better time than last week at 27:28 (8:52 per Mile.) I won first in my age group which my family was really proud of me. I wasn't tired or winded so I'm sure I could have went faster, but I'm glad I didn't. Also walked 4.06 Miles in 55 Minutes that night.
July 16th. - Walked 6 Miles in an hour and 24 minutes.
July 17th - Ran 7.14 Miles in 1 hour and 15 Minutes.
July 18th - Walked 5 miles in an hour and 10 minutes.
July 19th - Ran 7.15 Miles in 1 hour and 16 Minutes.
July 20th - Took the family to the Cincy zoo. No exercise today other than walking around the zoo. It's a great zoo if you are in the area.
July 21st - Did my first 8 miler today. Still not even a third of the way to a Marathon, but I'm trying not to think about that. Did 8.05 miles in 1 hour and 29 Minutes. Felt pretty good on this run. I ran on just about every street in our town too. Which was fun.
July 22nd - Ran 4.17 Miles in 46 Minutes.

I have come down with some kind of head cold/ Sinus deal so I'm not feeling to hot the last 3 days. Still got my runs in as it's not in my chest so I'm good to go. It's actually when I feel my best. I need to keep on top of this journal as my remembering just how I feel after each run is important. My eating was also real bad the last few days. The worse I felt the more I ate. Being sick anytime is a bummer and being sick in Summer is awful.

I'm also sticking with my 7 miles for 2 days during the week and extending my Saturday run by one mile each week. I'm currently at 8 miles on Saturdays. I need to figure out where to put in my 3-4 miler though during the week as they suggest you take the day before and after off from running your long run.

Have a great day everyone! :thumbsup2

Morning Everyone,

July 23rd - Added another 6 miles of walking (3.2 at lunch and 3 after dinner) at about 82 minutes. Still feel under the weather so my running tonight will be interesting.

Added my Soccer channels back so I may be watching more TV. :happytv: So I really will have to stay focused on my running and not let it slip to watch me some Soccer. By the way it was like watching a Rockstar when Beckham came on the field Saturday night. Very nice! :thumbsup2

My biggest worry about all this training is I will end up sick when it's time to run the TOT and the Marathon and I usually get sick around that time in January as I got sick last year at Disney.

Until next time.......

Hi Chris...

Wow...you've logging a bunch of miles!!! Just be careful and make sure you give yourself a day off here and there to recover :).

Hope you're feeling better...sorry to hear your sick. NO FUN AT ALL...especially during the summer.

BTW...nice pace on that last 5K! Awesome job.

Hey Chris--wow...your training has been going well. What training plan are you following?? You are doing A LOT of miles already, and like Amy said, make sure you get some rest.

Keep up the good work!!!

Good Morning,

Laurie and Amy I plan on resting today. I've been logging some good miles you are right. I've just enjoyed it so much and I for the most part feel really good when I'm doing my running.

I'm not really following any specific plan, but I have read all of John Bingham's books and I also read the Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer. I plan on leveling off in the next couple weeks and I'm also staying with 7 miles on Tuesday's and Thursday's at least for a while. I will probably increase my Saturday run until I get to the 12 miles and then stay there for a while. Nutrition is something I really need to focus on. Making sure I get enough calories is another thing I'm running into. I need to go back and re-read the sections in those books on Nutrition so I make sure I eat what I should be.

Thanks for the comments and the concerns! :thumbsup2

July 24th - 7.11 miles in 1 hour and 18 minutes. This was a good run, but that first couple miles seem to be really ruff. Was still dealing with the head cold/sinus deal so I was happy to get this run in.

July 25th - Walked 1.7 miles in 22 minutes. Mowed the yard which is always fun. :rotfl2:

July 26th - Ran another 7.11 Miles in 1 hour and 21 minutes. Slowed my pace down as I felt really tired and didn't feel much like running. I pushed through it and am very glad I did.

Today - I don't plan on doing anything. I may do a light walk, but I'm going to try and get some rest in.

Have a Disney Day Everyone!

Hi Chris...

Just wanted to say nice work there with the training and chime in with Laurie and Amy in regards to making sure you take the proper rest days, and to not push yourself too much with the mileage. You've got a strong base right now & I'd be hesitant to add too much more as it will invite opportunities for injury.

Nutrition was a huge thing for Amy and I last year, we learned a ton...and I think we have a pretty good grasp on how to handle it this year. I'm far from an expert but will gladly assist if you have any questions....I'm sure Amy would do the same.

Have a good week...keep up the awesome job!

Wow it's been a while. Some times life just gets in the way....

Anyway, I have kept up with my running, but have cut back my walking/biking/rollerbladding between my runs to give myself some rest.

July 28th - Ran 9.07 Miles in 1 hour and 46 minutes.
July 29th - Walked 4.71 Miles in 1 hour and 5 minutes
July 30th - Walked 6 miles in 1 hour and 24 minutes
July 31st - Ran 7.11 Miles in 1 hour and 21 minutes. And then I finally took a real day off. :cool1:
August 2nd - Ran 7.11 Miles in 1 hour and 20 minutes
August 4th - Ran 8.24 miles in 1 hour and 30 minutes.
August 6th - Walked 3 miles in 43 Minutes
August 7th - Ran 6.65 Miles in 1 hour and 19 minutes
August 9th - Ran 7 Miles on the Treadmill in 70 minutes. It was awesome running on the treadmill this time (Although the next time I tried I hated it).
August 11th - My first 10 miler. It Felt GREAT!!! I 10.44 Miles in 1 hour and 59 minutes.
August 13th - Ran 7.29 Miles in 1 hour and 20 minutes.
August 15th - Ran 7.45 Miles in 1 hour and 23 minutes.
August 18th - My first 11 miler and my first 2 hour run. Felt like I could run forever. It was cool and I really enjoyed my run. Ran 11.44 miles in 2 hours and 3 minutes.
August 19th - Walked 4.1 Miles in 55 Minutes.

So my weight is getting the better of me again and I'm worrying about how much I'm eating. I've trained myself not to eat a bunch of snacks, watch my calories and walk anytime I get the chance. Now I have to tell myself to eat more and on days I'm not running try to rest. I had been doing a good job of both eating more and resting more, but right now I want to walk and I really need to rest. I walked yesterday because I had a big food day on Saturday and my weight was up one pound. This morning it was back down that pound. My legs are sore because we were on the run all weekend as well and I did alot of house work (Which for me is not typical whatsoever). My weight has been anywhere from 183 to 187 for the last month now so I'm pretty happy with it, but whenever I see that number on the higher end I walk even more.

Thanks for everyone's advice I have cut on my activity and started eating more because of your advice. Even though I read it in every book I read I didn't listen and I was flat out tired. :rolleyes1

Time to update me on me. I've been running 7 miles 2 times a week and one long run on the weekend. I'm at 11.5 miles on the weekend and have done as many as 13. I need to start picking up my long run mileage as the Marathon is getting closer. I feel great physically and mentally (Other than a sinus infection) and with the weather finally cooling down I'm hoping it will be easier to do my long runs. I'm also considering mixing in my walking that I love with the running. Hoping it makes it easier on me.

Just two weeks out and I'll be heading for the TOT 13k. Can't wait!

What an inspiration you are. I got your link because my sister and i are also doing the tot. I have started to lose some weight recently when i changed my position with my company. I weighted in at 325lbs I never realized how big i had gotten until i was downsized at work and had alot of time on my hands. I thought i would change my life in all directions because of this opportunity. I set a large goal for myself instead of small ones and know i'm rethinking it. Recently i have started rewarding myself for the small goals i make at work and after reading your thread i realized i should be doing this for weight loss also. Keep up the good work. See you on the 27th or at the meets

ps i've lost 25lbs since the end of July:banana:

Great job on the 25lbs and keep up the great work. I found that small goals were what worked best for me so I hope it helps you out as well. I'm really excited to do the TOT as it's my first Disney Race and I really wanted to do this one before the Marathon to get a feel for everything. I'm bringing a first timer with me who is running and it should be awesome to expose him to Disney.

Wow, what a great journal -- and I loved the photos. Looking at you now, I'd have never believed you were ever overweight. I'm so glad you're enjoying running and I know (from first-hand experience) that you're going to love the Disney races. I hope to say "hi" at LTT and the ToT race WISH meets.

Congratulations on beating the odds and taking control of your health! You're a real inspiration. :thumbsup2

Well thank you very much. That is one of the nicest compliments I've ever received. It's funny I still feel like the really obese guy sometimes, but I know I'm not. :cool2:

Ran 7.3 miles last night and picked up over a minute a mile from my previous run. Love the cooler weather when running. Didn't think I would, but man that humid weather we have had just really slows you down.

Good Morning Chris,
Another wonderful inspiring person here on the boards! Those before and after pictures are unreal-awesome job!

I wonder/worry about the cooler weather coming too and hope I don't fall into a slump if it gets to nasty out.My treadmill is in pieces.

I am heading out shortly for my 3.7 miles. How long did it take you to increase your speed and distance?

Good Morning Linda,

I tried to stick to the 10% increase rule for each week. So if I ran 10 miles in one week the most I would have increased it was 1 mile for the next week. I didn't always stick to this, but it's a good rule of thumb from what I've read. My speed has been about the same being anywhere from 10-12 minute miles depending on the weather. I'm more focussing on the distance at this point, but that's just me.

My treadmill is my friend that's for sure, but I'd rather only use it if forced to. I get really bored even in front of a TV on the treadmill. That could just be me, but that's how I feel about it.

Good luck to you on your running. I've found it to be way more fun than I ever thought it would be and the people here on this board are awesome! :thumbsup2

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the response.I went out to run and it was pouring but I decided to go anyway. I can't believe it-I beat my time by 1:05 ,I ran my 3.7 miles in 36:36. I am soaked but psyched!

Yeah the treadmill can be a bore but come winter when it can be in the teens I am happy to have it.

Many have told me about the 10%rule, I wondered if there were any suggestions out there.

Now that I have a time that I feel is decent my next run I am going for 4 miles.

Linda

Chris,

Your thread was such an inspiration for me i start my own thread on the wish journal. Day 2 has been great. Thanks for the inspiration. See you at the Tot.

So I did a 13.5 miler yesterday for the first time. Took me 2 hours and 42 minutes. I was really tired at the end and kind of frustrated. I told my wife I'm ready to give up. I mean I'm only half way in miles and it took me that long without walking and I was really tired. I'm thinking to finish I'm going to have to walk. Of course yesterday my plan was to walk a couple miles mid way and the competitor in me decided I wasn't walking that would make it quitting. :rotfl2: I feel great today other than some tired muscles so I'm not giving up, but the thought seriously crossed my mind.

Something else I'm going to try is using Sporbeans instead of Gatorade and having water in my camelbak instead of Gatorade.

Anyone else ever feel like this? I really want to do this as it would be a huge accomplishment.

Goofyohio,

Dont get discouraged. Just think you couldn't walk 13.5 miles last year now you are running it. My brother always says to me sometimes its not about the time but just doing it. He is a runner and as you know i'm a slow walker. See you in 2 weeks

Thanks for the support. I only worry about the time because of the cut off for the Marathon. Everything was perfect for me yesterday and it still took me a long time. If I have to stop to use the restroom, to walk, to refuel I'm just worried I won't make it, but I won't give up. :thumbsup2

Can't wait for the TOT. Are you doing the 13k or 6.5k?
