Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

Got my VERY bright WISH shirts in the mail yesterday - so I expect a kick in the petoot from all of you when you pass by during the races!

TM training IS boring, to say the least.... I'm not comfortable running outside in our area, especially in the winter. But I keep plugging along on the TM, adding in strength training and occasional biking.

Now if I could just get someone to move Christmas until - February?

I was reading in the race weekend bulletin and it has a section on the Goofy. I know how the wristbands work, but I was just wondering are they going to deny you the goofy medal if you are allowed to finish, but your chip time says that you did slower than 16 minutes per mile. It talks about going to the Goofy tent to make sure you completed both races in the allotted time. For instance, If I started the race and was not at the back of the pack……I would have that extra time from when the last person crossed the start line to add to my total time that I have to complete the race. Is it possible that I could completely finish the race and they would not give me the goofy medal at the end? Just curious, it kind of freaked me out a little bit when I read it.

Btw...I completed 20 miles this past Saturday....I have a small blister but I did it. I did use a treadmill and finished in a few minutes under 5 hours.

I decided on a compromise. After my session with the trainer today I got on the TM and did an easy 15 min/mile pace for 4 miles (4.6 with warm up and cool down) I skipped the hill workout altogether and set the TM at 2% incline. My legs are feeling better today. My husband pointed out that the pain in my lower legs was likely due to the fact that I did my 22 on a flat course rather then the hills that I usually do for my outdoor workout.

Good luck getting the training done this week! I think we are 17 days away!! :woohoo:

That's why I rell my runners to run one or two long runs on courses similar to the race. Imagine a runner who runs a course that is severely rolling hitting Disney and then having to stay at the same incline for 25+ miles. Talk about flexor issues.

Glad you ran a flat 22.

It has said this since Day 1. They do control the Goofy medal a lot tighter than the donald and mickey. I agree that if you hit the finish chute before the clock turns off you will more than likely get a medal. There is no chip time comparison at the Goofy tent due to the headaches of making the comparison, so, as long as medals are coming out you should get one. Obviously, the RD has free will to change this but to date the above has happened. Oh, BTW, you agreed to the same language when you signed up for the half and full.

I ran it flat based on advice you had given me several weeks ago. Thanks for all of your excellent advice along the way!! :thumbsup2

I am gonnabe 52 so I don't always remember whatI say or when I say it.......I just hope for consistency :rotfl2:

Just wanted to point out to anyone who did their 20 on Sunday - not only was it the 20th it was also 20 days before the start of the Goofy - so 20 miles on the 20th, 20 days before Goofy. Somethings spooky about that!!! ;)

As for me I might end up getting in a short run outside on Thursday. Unfortunately it is going to be warm Thursday and Friday - I so HATE a warm Christmas. That is the one day of the year where it is suppose to be cold  Oh well - I know I won't get a run in on Christmas but will be definately getting in some miles this weekend. Hopefully :santa: will be nice to everyone this year!! Merry Christmas everyone!!

Thanks for all the advise. I managed to do 6.5 on the TM before going into the boredom coma. Charles, I'm going to take your advise and start the taper (that and I did a recon run and all the sidewalks in my area are covered with even more snow since they plowed all the snow from the road onto the sidewalks). This Friday the forecast is for freezing rain so I just can't get a break with the weather. I just hope my legs don't quit on me during the race.

On a different note, anyone know if they have shirts/polos for Goofy Challenge on sale? I've only seen the in training shirt for the marathon.

Merchandise is hit and miss. They will usually carry a polo for all races but the style sometimes makes you wonder if Disney farms out their creativity.

Shucks, I wear polo shirts most of the time and wanted a nice one to for this race. Hopefully, for the 5th year they decided to do something fantastic.

I'm back in the race :cool1:

Several calls where made and we found out that the company had closed for the holidays.

One person we called thought that the owners son had not gone on holiday and he would call him to see if they had any frames.

I got a call back to say that one was on its way, it should be here on christmas eve.

Santa also came early today, my Dh took a call and I have a sponsor for my new chair.:worship:

I just have to wait for the money to come through and I will have my order in.:woohoo:

I am also getting it cheaper  as I am a member of Achillies we get a 30% discount.:cheer2:

Tomorrow we are booking our WDW hotel rooms. :yay:

Welcome Nos! :flower3:

Congrats on those that got the 20 in this past weekend!!! :cool1:

Chris? My mileage has been spotty this past week.

Kirsty-Leigh ... So glad to hear the sleeves are working!!!! :cool1: :woohoo:

Syko I am so excited to hear that this season of miracles has comes thru. You are obviously meant to do this weekend!!! :thumbsup2 Get those hotel nights booked!

Had a really low mileage last week with my top distance as a 7 mile run outside Friday night. I was rather annoyed with the pace and kept saying the Garmin lied. Well Charles, I read your thoughts on the treadmill vs outdoor run and finally came to terms with my pace for that night. Makes sense. The wind, the worry of placing each foot fall and hitting an uneven spot or whatever in the dark. I have run faster but this was my 1st outdoor 7 miles (running non-stop) so I decided to take away that I kept that stride for 93 (?) minutes. This week only 3 miles on the TM, we have 4 TM's at my little gym and there is a 1/2 hour limit. So I had to igive it up when someone new came in. Not a bad thing, my knee was happy to be done. Tonight is hopefully another run at the gym. Fingers crossed I can keep the TM for at least an hour.

Lily? How's the packing going? I tried packing my carry-on to see if 2 days worth of outfits & spare shoes fit. It does :thumbsup2 Using a smaller rolling bag.

Duane... I hope to 'join you' for some miles this weekend. Fingers crossed that the rain they are saying for us on Christmas day isn't too bad and I can get in 1 more long-ish day. Hope the weather works out for your miles!!!

In case anyone is traveling now before Christmas .... MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!! And safe travels and happy times!!!! :santa:

Kirsty, I'm so happy for you that things are working out for January. Yup, you are definitely meant to do this event!

LOL! No packing just yet. Definitely will have rolling carry on for event wear. May not fit in the tossable clothes, but at least I will have my other stuff. I do have some things kind of set aside, but too busy right now to even think of anything since I'm hosting our Christmas Eve/Day dinners.

I have got a bit of movement, just nothing really noteworthy.

Goofy medals and timing issues. I had an experience with one of the Goofy's where I had to limp most of the race. I was pretty beat up at the end and was wisked into the med tent. Well, after ice and things settled, I went to Goofy area for my hard earned medal and the person was closing up and refusing to give me the medal saying I was over time. Well, I had my Garmin and was begging her saying I was in the med tent. One other person came along and was also from the med tent and then a third. Well, thankfully I got the medal and the gal actually headed over to the med tent to see if any other Goofy recipients were there. Moral of the story; no med tent until AFTER you get your Goofy medal.

Ok guys, you are freaking me out with all your missing out on medal talk! I keep having a recurring nightmare that I finish both races in time but they refuse to give me my medal! That would be really bad, that medal is the only thing that keeps me running somedays!

I flew to Indiana last night, it is about 24 out and there is snow everywhere! Not sure how I am goin to run, but boy does it feel christmassy out there!

I hope you all have a merry christmas! And Santa brings you all you wanted :)

Don't worry about the medal. If you cross you will get one.

I'm DONE! Did 10 last night and 20 today. Last night was pretty cool as I ran at the park. They have Christmas lights and a small train that runs along a lighted track. So it was pretty cool, lots of people, lights, the train. Made the run a little easier.

Had a pretty boring run today. I run alone and am OK for 10 -12 miles. Anything after that and I start to get really bored with running. Kept telling myself that next time I run this far I will be surrounded by thousands of like minded runners.

This year the training seemed to drag on. Forgot about all the training when I signed up last February :) A few more short runs and we'll be in Disney!

Looks like everyone is making it through. Kristy - it was beautiful last week when I was in Wisconsin. Just enough fresh snow to keep it white. Loved it. But, it was to cold to run, around 25 degrees. Won't catch me out in that weather :).

Hang in there all, for the most part we are over the tough spots!
Duane

Merry Christmas Everyone! Sounds like everyone's been very good this year and hopefully Santa will bring something special.

Christmas came a little early for me. I found out that Disney is extending their military Salute to Heros discount for 2010. Not as good of a deal as '09, but still save me a lot on the park tickets.

I got family friends flying in to spend the week today. Not sure how I'm going to train. They're staying in my basement where my TM is. On the flip side, I think I'm coming down with a chest cold so no training may be best.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Hey im from LOUISIANA!!!
Wondering if anyone on the board was from here?
This is my first goofy and was wondering if the cut off times are really strict in worst case scenarios where a reduction of pace is required!
Thanks. cant wait.
