Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

Hello everyone! I just found this forum while looking for more stuff to read after downloading my Goofy race instructions. What a great community - wish I had found it sooner. Anyway, I'm looking forward to running my first Goofy in a few weeks. I find marathons more fun when running and talking with people than to being out there on my own, so hopefully I'll have the chance to see some of you along the way.

Cheers,

John

At the moment I won't be there.

My Dh is working on my chair and they have changed the frame size, so my raceing wheels will not fit.:scared1:

I am also injured. yresterday I fell out of my day chair backwards and hit my head on the concrete step at the Tiki room I also sprained my left arm........I think someone is trying to tell me something!!!!!!!!

Kirstie - there is still time. I am keeping my fingers crossed. After everything that has happened this year I am sure you WILL be at the Goofy. I am thinking positive thought and sending good vibes and pixie dust :wizard: your way. Hope your head and your arm feel better soon. :flower3:

Sorry for all the trials, Kristy. I hope your injuries heal quickly and you are able to resolve your wheel situation by 1/9. I guess the new chair will not arrive in time?

I am still away for Christmas. I have done a bit of core/strength training while I have been away, but not so much on the cardio. We were at a hotel on Friday/Saturday so I used a TM there. I an 8 miler on the schedule for yesterday and managed to get that done outdoors--in Manhatten. I usually do the elliptical on Mondays as a way to rest after long miles on Sunday. I could have gone to my cousin's house to use her machine, but just didn't feel like it. So, hopefully my slacking off late last weeks and now early this week will not be too detrimental. We are likely to be traveling all day tomorrow, so I won't be back at it until Wednesday--I hope.

I am getting a bit nervous that it is getting so close and I am so off track with the holidays and the travel.

Hey guys, it sounds like you are managing to struggle through the holiday period and somehow get your runs in! And it doesn't sound like anyone is going too mad! I myself am obsessing about every little detail of race weekend and am on the boards every 5 mins looking for info!

I finally made my plight known yesterday and the mom of the family took me to her local gym for a run around the track, it made me feel tonnes better but confirmed to me that one of my toenails is probably not going to make it to goofy, I has some issues with it on my 20 miler and was hoping it was going to regroup and recover but it doesn't seem to be going that way! So even though I now have access to a gym I am going to try and stay out of my running shoes for a little while, no point being at the start line more injured than I have already planned for!

So as a part of freaking out about the race I am trying to plan my final week, I think I am going to swim a lot because that helps my shins, I have a 6 miler planned for the weekend before and I know to stay away from the drugs! And I am going to hydrate really well :) but is there anything else that you vets do the last week prior to race? Any last minute tips for a girl to obssess over?

Hey Everyone!!!

Just checking in. Did 6 outside on Saturday and 12 yesterday on the treadmill. I'm so happy to be backing down my miles. Although I left my schedule at work I have an idea of what I'm doing the rest of this week. We'll see. lol

I think it's going to be halves for me for a while if not forever. This is my second Goofy and all the training for the Marathon let alone both is just too much for me. I won't say I'm done with the distance, but I am done for a while.

Good luck to everyone on their "Final Approach" for the Goofy Challenge and I can't wait to meet many of you next week!

Yup. Taper madness is setting in. I was worried about not getting in a run on Sunday due to the house guests wanting to do stuff so I went out early morning even though I knew it would be very icy. Step 1 out of my driveway and BAM, slipped sideways, skinned up my right knee and side of my calf pretty badly, torqued my knee and hip, and had a shooting pain from my right wrist up to my elbow. I hobbled up back to the house, cleaned up the abrasions, bandaged everything (btw, I learned a new trick from my wife... if you need a really large piece of gauze to cover big abrations, use a maxi pad since its large and absorbes blood really well...you just have to get over your friends making jokes about your bandage having "wings"). Anyway, I sulked around the house wondering why I did it. I knew better, but ignored good sense. The good news is that probably the worst thing I had was a bruised ego and a few hours later when it warmed up I went out and did my 12. I started out strong, but definately felt the missing the previous weeks runs towards the end. I'm still a little worried about the Goofy, but the fall showed me that the panic about not being trained enough makes you do stupid things. Even though I didn't get my 20 miler in, I just got to have faith in my training and myself to pull me through.

Best wishes for the New Year!!!

Nos

Any last minute tips for a girl to obssess over?

Let's see.... black skirt or gray? what will we wear Sunday afternoon/night with our medals? What will we wear on Monday with our medals? (continue with this thru the rest of your trip days) LOL Sorry I'm slowly going mad myself :scared1: I'd really really be a happier camper with a 12 mile and am embarrassed to admit that I was making faces at Chris' remark of being able to do a 12 miler. Jealousy, it's not a pretty thing :rotfl:

I dragged my wretched body to the gym again. 2 miles on the elliptical (i still don't like that thing! i have a love/hate relationship with it). did my circuit 3 times for upper and got in 5 miles at my run pace and that final 1/2 mile was tough. I was hungry and tired.

Nightmares? Oh yes. Last night turned out the light and tossed and turned for over an hour freaking out over the 'should have dones' slept and woke again. I'm bouncing off the walls at work. Guy yelled at me at work today and I let him have it. :lmao: Don't mess with me with this week dude! :rotfl2:

Chris... Congrats on getting this 12 miles. I am happy for you, just a wee bit green wanting 12 myself :upsidedow I say next time all of us cold weather people relocate to Florida in December. Course we'll need to win a whole lot of lotto

Glad to have you!

No outside stuff for me now. Glad I got in the big steps before snow. Now it's the little things.

Nos, :scared1: unbelievable. So glad you are ok and survived the maxi bandage.
:lmao:

Kirstie, I am amazed by all the challenges you have faced this year. PD that you are able to get through somehow to the start and finish line.

Kirsty-Leigh, glad you got some steps in to settle your mind. Swimming is a great idea. You should be ok to take it easy with these few days left you will not be setting any records with training at this point. Just keep moving as best you can.

Thanks for all the pixiedust:

My Dh managed to get the front wheel to fix, he had to do something to the caps and strech the frame.:confused3

As for me I have the :headache: from hell and I'm trying not to use my arm, the only thing is its the arm I use all the time!!!!!

My new chair has not been ordered yet, as I am waiting for the money to come through the clearing house, it should be here by the end of the week.

Last time I asked the lead time was 7 weeks, so it will be getting its test run at the princess:

Kristy... how's that headache doing tonight? Feeling any better?

I was reading the chat links for Dec and found this...

"Marc: If i am running the goofy, do i need to bring two seperate waivers to the packet pick up. Both bib numbers are listed on the one waiver that i downloaded but the confirmation email indicated that two waivers are needed.

Matt: Marc, Yes, you will need to bring two waivers to packet pick up."

Somehow I missed that I needed 2 waivers even though the waiver has both bib #'s. So now I have 2 ready to go.

Veteran Goofys... am I reading this right that we only get 1 goody bag? I'm thinking more of 2 mornings I'll need to check a bag if I bring crocs and worried that the 1 bag they give me will tear. I have other older Disney race bags I can bring as a back up for Sunday but had thought we'd get a bag per race.

Visited the gym last night for the usual pace for 4 miles :thumbsup2 Thought about 5 but had to give up the TM due to only 4 TMs in the gym. :sad1: But I was ok with it and the lady was super nice since I was nearing 4 miles in like 2 minutes so she was understanding and let me finish :woohoo:

Still hurting. I'm trying not to take the pain meds, as when I do take them I have to have the strong ones.

I tried out the new frame and its leaning to the right, so Dh has to work on it some more.

My head is still swollen and I could not get my helmet on!!!!!
I konw its silly as I was trying it out, but I hate getting on it without my helmet.

We will not be staying on site, we could not get a hotel in a $$$ we could afford, so the friend we are sharing the babysitter with is comming to stay with us.

Thank you so much for posting this.....I had only printed out one!!!!

That's just worng! One waiver for the Goofy If you add the 5k then two waivers. Only one Goofy waiver is required since you will be heading to a Goofy table at the expo for your bibs. Both bibs will be located in one envelope.

I went to the chat page and found this which is accurate. I just think Matt was having a bad day.... it's not the first incorrect chat answer:confused3

Debbie, Fl: I am a bit confused about the waivers. I am doing the Goofy Challenge. Both my half and full #s are on the waiver. Do I need to try and print up separate full and half waivers, or just use the one with both on it for Goofy?

Kaia: Debbie, You only need to print the one Goofy waiver with your half and full bib numbers on it. Note to self, when you arrive at the Expo to pick up your packet, the Goofy Challenge packet pick up will be sequenced by your Marathon number.

Shhhh! kindly beg for an additional bag when picking up your shirt. In the last two years they have been instructed to not give out the second bag but if you find a nice sr citizen and smile a lot, well, they will usually react favorably.

ADDED - The Final Instructions CONFIRM one waiver

That 2 waiver thing was in the Dec chat. They had 2 Dec chat links. Apparently they had so many they decided to answer a few more and it's a separate link. I don't recall seeing that 2nd one when I read it afterwards. i always miss them so check it out that night or the next day and I really only recall 1 Dec chat link.

Kristy glad to hear work is progressing on your new frame and hope the tweaking your DH has to do works perfectly. Man your poor head, ouch! Tons of PD and hope you are able to get a good night sleep with that headache. Double ouch!

Thanks Diane

I'm having a 90 min massage tomorrow :cloud9:
I just have to be a bit economical with the truth on the medical form.....esle they won't let me have one.;)

Diane I read one of the transcripts and it said that you only need to bring one! I noticed lot contradiced each I will try and find it and post it but on my iPod so it can be difficult!

I manages to get in 2 training runs this week, one at the gym for about an hour and one outside today, I did like 3 miles and it was soooo cold! I have no idea how you guys up here do it! I seriously have so much respect for you, I was running through the snow and it was 24 degrees out! My
lungs are in pieces and I had to sit in the shower for 30 mins to regain feeling in my hands! But I got the steps in and only 2 days till I am back home in FL where I belong! My shin splints are causing me problems but that always happens in the cold weather so I am praying they will improve when I go home, lots of swimming next week for me I think!

Everyone else sounds like they are doing ok, except for you Kristy I have no idea how you keep so positive but I am sending you extra special hugs right now!

Keep it up guys not long to go now and I myself am going insane with excitement eeeeeeeee! Oh and the nightmares have well and truely set in now, last night it was missing the start of the half and not being eligible for the goofy, I wonder what it will be tonight!

Ok I am going to look for that transcript now

Thinking about your headache.....

You are not going to want to hear this but as a survivor of two helmet breaking bike wrecks this year I have a little experience with getting past a head injury. The one word my doctor left me with was do not exercise after a head injury if your are still suffering from a crash related head ache....even more importantly, if a head ache starts after you start to work out in the first week or so after an injury immediately STOP. You really do not want to launch a clot into an area that well creates a stroke or worse.

Take care. I know you need to get out and test the set up but keep it slow and take care

Kirsty Thanks for the hugs.

Charles Thanks for the advice. I have TIA's (amongst other things) so I know what to look out for.

Ok Charles you were one step ahead of me! I guess I should get used to being slow for next week! :rotfl2:

thanks for the confirmation

kirsty
