Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

Hey im from LOUISIANA!!!
Wondering if anyone on the board was from here?
This is my first goofy and was wondering if the cut off times are really strict in worst case scenarios where a reduction of pace is required!
Thanks. cant wait.

Depends.... If you fall behind the 16 minute pace (started when the last runner crossed the start line) then expect to be swept. There are hard points where busses are parked but you are subject to the brrom anytime you fall behind. As long as you are in front of that time you are good to go. If you look at the official finish results you will see quite a few runners with 7+ hour times. These are folks who were not near the back but for some reason were not able to keep a 16 minute pace AND stayed in front of the sweep mark.

Disney does have a great little buffer at the end. Generally if you get into the last park (or so you will not impede traffic you are generally allowed to finish. For the hald this would be mile 12; then entrance into Epcot. For the full Mile 23, the entrance into the Studios.

Merry Christmas fellow Goofy pals!

Congrats Duane on getting it done.

Welcome Marathon Man!

Nos - Hope the cold is a quick one. I've been sniffling all day and hoping it's just allergies.

Jackie

Merry Christmas you Goofy people you!

Welcome MarathonMan. Nothing to add to answer your question. Seems Chester handled it well. Are you thinking this will be a close event for you then? You may have a surge of adrenalin to get you through. Be mindful of your pace and not going out too fast too soon.

Stay well everyone. Get those last steps in.

Thanks Chester.

Hi Lily, I dont think it will be a problem with the cutoff, but if my achilles or knee starts acting up, then potentially could cut it close on the full. Im pretty sure I will start off the first few miles at a pace that will get me ahead of the sweep, so as long as i know the cut offs, ill push my self along and worry about the pain later.

Another Question - What fun things are there to do Thursday night (nightlife) around the town? Also, are there any fun pasta party kinda things that go on? I didnt see any on the website, but maybe i didnt look hard enough

Thanks, and it feels good to have some additional motivation from this site!

Disney offers Pasts in the Park on Thursday.

http://adisneyworldsports.disney.go.../PDF/Endurance/WDW2010PastaInTheParkParty.pdf

This group meets at the Pop Century Food Court on Friday around 4:30

Most all on property restaurants will have a pasty alternative on Friday and Saturday nights.

As far as night life, it's probably better to not have a real 'night life' night until after the race. If this is your first Goofy you will find that Thursday night is the only good night's sleep you will have during the weekend.

The freezing rain that was suppose to come Friday night instead was just rain that did a good job in melting a good amount of snow. Today hit the 50s and I got six miles in. It was tougher workout than I expected since I had to do some high knees as I plowed through some of the remaining snow banks, hopped from clear spots to clear spots, zig zagged to avoid icy areas, and jumped over puddles. Still it felt amazingly good to run outside. Tomorrow is suppose to be a high of 50 and mostly sunny so hopefully I can get 12 in.

I have to also agree that all the talk about not getting a medal was starting to scare me, but after today's run I'm pretty sure I can avoid the sweep up bus.

It was a beautiful day today on the North Coast. I got in a good muddy 10 miler. Had to rinse off my shoes and I don't know if the mud will come out of my sweats. It was fun!

Question: We were conversing about the full/Goofy and the comment came up about if one is severly undertrained for a full there is a risk of kidney problems. My son referred to it as kidney blow-out. I've never heard of this. Anyone have any info?

Hey guys I am postin on my iPod today so no smilies from me!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and got everything you wanted (my personal present to myself is going to be a goofy medal!)

So I am still in IN until Friday and I haven't been able to get a single step o exercise in since I left on wed, I am a little worried about it to be honest, I did my back to back on sun/mon and then on wed I did 8 miles on my bike and then I flew out here and nothing! The weather has been awful and the only days it hasn't I have been too busy to get out! I am not sure what to do because the people I am staying with don't exactly get that I NEED to go out there and run, in fact nobody I know does, they just say that resting will make me feel better. Well I don't feel better, I feel like I am seizing up all over, is it ok that I am not doing anything or is it seriously gonna screw up my plans? When I get back next fri I plan to go to the pool on Sat and do 6 miles on sun as to my plan, is that gonna work after 10 days of rest?

I hope your tapering is going well and your all not going mad!

I know charles posted the weather on another post, am I the only one praying for warm weather? You know us floridians get cold when it drops below 70! :)

kirsty

Kirsty I'm with you.....bring on the heat.

Well my new frame arrived on the 24th and it did get taken out of the box.......but thats as far as DH went.

I going nuts, I want to train, but until he swaps everything over for me I'm grounded.
The problem is that he is enjoying sleeping in too much!!!!! he's not looking forward to getting back on his bike and hitting the trail for 60 miles.

Kirsty-Leigh - I wanted to share that in 2007 Thanksgiving I came down with a virus while training for the 2008 Marathon. I don't think I got in more than 10 miles that December IF that. My entire Dec 2007 was a recovery month. I had no energy and did a lot of resting and short days and light days at the gym. I walk but I still managed to finish in under 7 hours. That said have had a rough 2 weeks with short miles and it's not leaving me happy either. My 6 mile run had walking in it last night but that 24* windchill does get to you. Hang in there you'll be fine!!!! I hope you get in a few miles when you get home with your sleeves again to reassure yourself but you'll do it!!! You'll get that gift you've promised yourself on Jan 10th. :thumbsup2

Kristy - LOL over DH enjoying sleeping in too much. Hope you get that frame running soon

Hope the weekend is treating everyone well. After seeing Duane's race outfit on the other thread I'm starting to wonder if I need to make room for tights along side the skirts. LOL Oh and a poncho for sunday! ACK! :scared1: thankfully I have trained in the rain I just prefer NO WIND

Stay sane! Or is it too late? Less than 2 weeks. Mom has the puke bags in her carry-on :lmao:

I got in 10 miles today. My DH got me a Timex Ironman watch for Christmas so I was able to keep on pace this time. I was pleased with my time. 2 hours 5 minutes - I did a 5 minute run/3 minute walk. My hip was starting to bother me but not too bad. I had a nice cool bath after and although my hip is still a little sore its not too bad. It is so easy now to stay on pace and not get tired out with the interval timer. Now I wonder why I didn't get one of these sooner.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and I can't believe in 2 weeks from today we will all have Goofy medals around our necks. Happy taper!!!

Syko - I hope everything works out for you - see you at the start!

I skipped my 12 miler on thursday. I woke up feeling like a cold was coming on and I figured it would be better to not run and not get sick than run and end up really sick for the race. I have been trying to get alot of rest and taking lots of vitamins, etc. But I am really feeling like a slacker. I think I will try to get out on tuesday, wednesday and thursday before we leave friday. I will definately run slow, maybe mostly walk those miles. I am keeping the cold at bay....

2 weeks from now and we will all be done!!!!:)

Becky

Kirsty - I am telling myself that we are already trained. If we need to take a few days off we will be ok. But I know exactly how you feel!

Lily - Great job on the 10!

Tricia - Way to go on your run! I hope your hip feels better.

Diane - OMG that was me last year. I seriously do not know how I finished the full.

Becky

Lily, I love your attitude! I'm not sure I would have had as much fun sliding around in the mud. But, I'll remember that the next time I have to trudge through the mud!

Kirsty, you will do fine in the marathon. It's mind over matter at this point. You're previous training will come through on race day. Just stick with the program for the last 2 weeks. I know what you mean about people not understanding why you have to get in the miles......

I'm also rooting for warm weather. I have had enough of this Michigan weather! I just ran 12 in 27 degree - 16 degree wind chill. It was brutal. My mistake for thinking "taper" meant that I was done training! And, my mistake for running out with the wind at my back. I ran the last 5 into the wind. I think it was worse than the 20-miler last week!

I can't wait to go! I just want to be in the warm weather with friends!

I think this is why they call it Taper Madness...

Kirsty - I didn't run any midweek last year for the last 3 weeks, and I finished the marathon. I'm not planning on repeating that strategy this year, but it can be done. Sometimes rest is more important in the big picture. If you can get in a couple of short runs either while you're gone or after you get back, your legs will remember what you're supposed to do!

Nos - Amazing job on your run! I've had a couple of those recently, just with mud but no ice. (Kinda like Lily's run!) Made for a really good workout.

Diane
- I'm pretty sure we gave up sanity when we hit the "confirm" button on the Goofy registration. :rotfl:

Becky - Good luck keeping the cold at bay. I lost the battle. Woke up Christmas Day feeling sniffly, and now it's pretty much full blown. I did do my 10 miles yesterday before I was completely unable to breathe. We'll see how the rest of the week goes.

Felt good for the 10 miles yesterday. Love my winter running group - it's an unofficial version of our Galloway group, so there are no rules. If you want to run faster than the rest of the group, it's okay. 4 of us left the others behind and had a really good run - finally decided we were pushing ourselves too hard and slowed down a little, but still got it done and felt good when we finished. Hoping to do one last track workout tomorrow - if I can breathe...

Jackie

Syko - I hope everything works out for you - see you at the start!
Becky

At the moment I won't be there.

My Dh is working on my chair and they have changed the frame size, so my raceing wheels will not fit.:scared1:

I am also injured. yresterday I fell out of my day chair backwards and hit my head on the concrete step at the Tiki room I also sprained my left arm........I think someone is trying to tell me something!!!!!!!!

You are going to make it. Think how much sweeter the race will be after all the trials in getting there.

Kristy OMG! What a time of it you are having!!!! Hang in there!!! Still keeping the fingers crossed you are set to go on Jan 9th and 10th! :wizard: Keeping my fingers crossed all the way thru ;)
