Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

???

Sounds like you need a new sponsor if they cannot come through!

Not sure where the frame snapped but that could explain a lot of the other turning things I think I have read about.

Hang in there, it IS the season of miracles.

Where the frame snapped is the part that concets the dampener to the front and that does control how stiff the chair is.
Because of my "problems" I have to have a very stiff chair else I fall over all the time.:rotfl2:

I am looking for a new sponsor as I need to get a different chair so that I can start doing the time trials that are required for the selection for 2012.
I know I will not make the team for 2012, but if I am on the circuit, I will be seen and hopefully make it on to a training team for 2016. (If i'm still around then :lmao:)

Disney won't like it, but I might just be mad enough to try to the Goofy in my day chair.:scared1:

Syko - sorry to hear about your chair, it just seems to be one thing after the other for you at the moment  I am sending magic Christmas wished and pixie dust to hope you make it to Goofy

well my compression sleeves arrived yesteday along with some new shorts the help with some chaffing issues that I won't go into detail about! Anyway I have been wearing them around the house and my legs feel good in them, and today I volunteered at the hospital, and was on my feet for 4 hours and my shin still feels pretty good, so tomorrow I am taking them for a test run, I will let you know how it goes but even if they don't work I will still have the fact that they are very stylish, they are the sexiest things I have evr worn:hippie:! My boss came home last night and I was wearing my new shorts my sleeves and a pjama top and she couldn't stop laughing at me! Oh well if they work I don't care what I look like and I certainly won't at mile20!

Good luck with all your LR this week only 20 days to go now

Kirsty

Kirsty - sorry to hear about your chair. Hope you can get something worked out before Goofy. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Kirsty Leigh - glad to hear your shin is feeling better.

I got out this morning for a 3 miler. The weather was nice not to cool not to hot - but yet cool enough to wear a long sleeve tech shirt - big thing for me since we don't get to wear long sleeve very often. As I was putting on my shoes this morning I told my DH I wouldn't need to get new shoes before the Goofy. I have a newer pair that I mainly wear on my long run days and an older pair that I have been wearing on shorter runs/ So after being off a week because of piriformis pain in my hip and leg. Before I went out I used a heat pad on my hip - seems to make it feel better. It was pretty windy today and since I am doing 20 tomorrow morning I didn't want to push myself too hard so I walked but did alot of running as well. I could feel a little pain in my hip and leg but not bad - just enough for me to know it was there - LOL. When I got to about 1.5 miles I could tell I was going to need new shoes before the marathon (so not in the budget right now - UGH) So I went to the mall with my sister today and ended up getting a new pair of shoes. I LOVE them - again so not in the budget but I figured with my hip already hurting and my previous issues with my arch I don't want to take a chance at hurting myself by using blown out shoes. My normal running store usually only gets one color of my style Asics even though they make 2 usually. I have countless number of blue striped shoes and since I went to a different running store this time I was able to get ones with pink stripes and an cool pink pattern. I love pink!! Going to try them out on my 20 miler tomorrow. They feel really good on my feet. Guess I better get to bed so I can wake up early and do the 20 miler so I am not running all day. Ugh so not looking forward to this....

Whew! good luck on your 20 miler in first run shoes. You are crazier the me! I am sure things will work out OK but it's not a lot different than just lacing them up for the marathon. In most cases you really want 2-3 3-4 mile runs before running the long run. The good news is that today's shoes are usually good out of the box.

My craziness came when I recevied a new pair of shoes the day I was headed out of town to a half marathon. 13 miles first time out of the box + airport miles. I did blister but it was from a seam ripping as I put my sock on.

Let us know how the run went

I'm here trying to get inspiration for my 20 miles tomorrow. I just looked at the weather. Temps should be low 30s while I am out, but it doesn't look like anything will be falling from the sky. So far the snow isn't really sticking to the pavement, so the path should be pretty clear as well.

I tried to squeeze in a short TM work out in today, and, well, it was really short. 6 minutes and some seconds... I had just started when a guy who was coming to give an estimate showed up. By the time he left, I had to shower and get ready to go to the Nutcracker. Forgot to eat dinner, so I am sitting here with a bowl of pasta.

So sorry to hear about your chair, Syco. I hope you get a sponsor and that new fancy chair you have your eye on. And, of course I hope that Goofy works out for you.

Glad to hear the compression sleeves are working for you, Kirsty. If they work, no need to care how they look...

Congrats on the new shoes, TnT. Sorry you had to stretch your budget to cover them this month. Glad you were able to get pink. I hope they work well for you tomorrow.

Hope to hear tales of eveyone's LR tomorrow.

Thanks for all the  and pixiedust: everyone.

Kirsty Comfort over fashion any day for me, but that might just be bcause i'm older than you!!!:rotfl:
I know about those chaffing issues I used to suffer when I would spend 2+ hours horse riding a day.

Tricia I glad you liked to cooler weather yesterday, I froze and wore my UA cold gear.:lmao: i'm a wimp, my moto is if there isn't any snow then theres no point putting up being cold.

Christine We saw the nutcracker a last weekend and loved it. I don't know how you can run 20 miles when the weather is so cold.:worship:

I hope everyone flys through thier miles today, just think that you will be tappering soon!!!!
I should have being doing 60 today, but at least I will get into WDW sooner.

Ok so I did my 20 miler. GLAD its over. I wanted to get it done for peace of mind and also because I am a dork and like that I did 20 miles on the 20th - so 19 wouldn't do. LOL Instead of going outside today I ended up doing the 20 miles inside on the TM. It turned out to be a good thing - first because of the new shoes I had to stop after 2 miles and put in my arch support insert, then I needed to put moleskin on my heel because the shoe was rubbing, then the moleskin fell off so I remembered the duct tape trick except I only have Gorrilla tape and it doesn't stick very well to sweaty skin. Finally ended up using my white sports tape - did the trick. But meanwhile I realize I forgot to take the inside sole of the shoe out (I only use one insert in my left shoe since that is the only one I need it on) I put the laces through the highest up hole and it made it tighter on my heel. So I am glad I was home for my first long run with the new shoes, gave me a chance to see how they will be during the marathon. Now that I know what needs taped I am good to go. The shoes were great. They are the same ones as the only ones I have used just the next version higher - Asics Gel-Kayano. Because it was decent temps outside and we have the windows open it wasn't too bad. I was actually using the timer to work out a 5 minute run/5 minute walk. Seemed to be ok. I may end up shortening the walk as toward the end and I was walking was when I felt hip pain. Since I know I am normally faster outside then on the TM I was pretty happy with the 20 miler today - 13.5 minute per mile pace.

Hope everyone else that was doing their 20 miler today made it through ok!!! Its almost taper time.

Not only did I get my 20 miler in yesterday, I bumped it up to 22! :cool1: My average pace was 12:14 per mile. I feel good today. I took a cold soak followed by putting on heat rub and compression tights. I probably won't do the TM today, but maybe the elliptical...

I think I have a new race day strategy--seemed to work for me yesterday. I start each mile with a run, then walk the rest of the mile. So, yesterday, I made sure that my Garmin was telling me my average pace had gone under 12minutes before I started walking. The downside is that as the miles get higher, it takes longer to get under 12... I may have to break the marathon into laps in order to make this work... Thoughts?

Hope everyone else did well with their distances this weekend.

Tricia, sorry to hear about the shoe issues. Glad you were home so you could work out the kinks before marathon weekend.

This is not too different than I do---That is set the Garmie for one mile laps. JUST make sure to change you view so you and averge pace in one of the windows. I think you will fand that most of us lose pace as the miles increase :confused3

One thing to watch out for - your Garmie will start to not line up well with mile markers. It depends on how well you follow the tangents of the course, how many potty staops you make and how much zigging or zagging you do. It's not uncommon to be a half mile off near the end. Just stick with your Garmie for the intervals and you will be fine.

OR do not program the one mile laps into the Garmie and just remember to hit lap at each mile mark.

Syko - so sorry to hear about your chair! I hope you get it fixed in time for goofy.

Kirsty - I hope the compression sleeves work for you. My Dh had to wear them last year when he ran the full with me. I wear pull on braces for my knees so I know all about looking cute while running, LOL!

Tricia - I do not know how you did 20 on the TM!! I wish I could do that. I have the same pair of pink kayanos - will be wearing them for the full. I love them!

Christine - Wow! WTG on 22 miles!

I went out on saturday and did my second 20 miler. It was so cold (I know those of you in the northern states are rolling your eyes at me right now) it was 39 when I left and about 45 when I came home. It wasn't the cold that bothered me. It was the stinking wind! I had to run back home at mile 10 and grab a scarf to cover my face because my lips and chin were numb. But I finished feeling good - even had negative splits for the last 4 miles - and shaved 13 min off my 20 miler from 2 weeks ago. I suffered through my ice bath and am happy to report absolutely no soreness since the run! It is very strange to not be sore...

The duct tape worked well and stayed in place. I still did get a blister in that spot, but it did not hurt? So I will be packing my duct tape in my suitcase.

Keep up the running everyone! We are almost there!!

The trail I was on yesterday is a 5 mile trail with markers at each half and full mile. I reset the Garmie at the end of the trail before starting again. I started my run at each mile marker without regard to what the Garmie said. My thought for the Goofy is to run at each mile marker and not necessarily reset my watch at each mile. Maybe every 5 miles? Prior events I have not reset at all, and it was nice to have a screen with the full mileage and my time. I guess that is what the chip is for. And, I can always add up my laps to see how my "actual" time differs from the chip time ;).

Hey Guys, first of all, how do you all make your Garmies do fancy things??? I only know how to turn mine on and reset it :confused3

So back to the point of my post, I just finished my 20 miler :cool1: oh and yesterday I ran 10, so in the past 2 days I ran 30 miles, now if I can do that then I can do an extra 9.3 :thumbsup2 I wasn't planning on doing so much, I did 10 yesterday to try out my compression sleeves (which seemed to help) and then today I had the day off and I had to go take a test this morning, and I aced it and I was so giddy I decided to go for another run, and when I got out there I felt so good I just kept going, hence the 10/20 back to back :cool1: I felt awesome while I was running it but when I got back home and started stretching I just crashed and I was really uncomfortable but I had a gu (didnt think I could keep anything else down!) and suffered through an ice bath and now I dont feel too bad!!!

Anyway congrats to everyone else who did their 20 miles this weekend (or 22! Goody Job Christine!)

Syko - I agree comfort over fashion for me! I too used to ride horses and chaffing and blisters were a daily occurance! and comfort trumped everything else, I was the only teenager at my school who didnt care what she looked like as long as I was nr a pony I was good :woohoo:

OK I G2G eat something now, burned nearly 2000 cals so I am going to attempt to put them back in me :lmao:

Kirsty

Fantastic jobs, everyone! Despite aches and pains and cold weather, you've managed to get your steps in! That's always a GOOD thing!

Thanks for the kinds words about our 20 miler adventure. Wendy kept saying before we went, "Why not just sign up for the full?" but we needed a half in South Carolina!! It's so different to do those long distances with friends!! :woohoo:

I had a staph scare last week, which the podiatrist hopefully resolved today. Whew! So, I guess I'm still in it for Goofy!!

This week will be a difficult one for a lot of us with family and friends and events. Keep your eyes on the prize, team!

Just found this forum. Wish I found it when I first started training for the Goofy. This was suppose to be the last of the long runs (10/20), but DC got hit with the blizzard and we got about 20" of snow (which is still on the ground). Running outside is suicide. Since the sidewalks are still covered with accumalated snow, the only option is to run on the road. Many roads are barely cleared out for 2 cars to pass. Also with all the ice (and black ice) there's a lot of cars sliding all over the place. I chock it up to that we don't get a lot of snow here and many people believe 4-wheel drive mistakenly equates to 4-wheel stop and continue to drive like it's dry pavement.
I tried to run on the TM on the 19th and barely got in 2 miles. I even put on Lord of the Rings thinking a long movie would take my mind of the "stop" button. Not sure how others do 20. Anyway since the high temps up here are about 35 degrees and the chances of snow melting is slim are there any suggestions on how to continue training?

Nos, If you are comfortable with your training to date I would just blow the weekend off and start taper. If you really feel the need to get 20 in try a 20 over the Cristmas Holiday but I think I would skip the back to back.. Then just get back on the taper pull back.

Good Luck!

Welcome, Nos!! Glad you found us. I would listen to Charles...he is very knowledgeable.

I am tempted to take the week off.... I just got back from the gym. An hour or so on the elliptical. Tomorrow morning I have a session with my trainer. Well, my lower legs are still sore from yesterday, which is unusual. My post long training pain is usually in the quads and glutes. In addition, I have a bit of a cough with some junk in my chest--also unusual for me.

So, I am thinking after my session with the trainer I'll skip my cardio (TM hill workout 100 mins scheduled for tomorrow) and rest my legs. We have a 700 mile drive on Wednesday, so no time for a workout. On Thursday I could try to get over to my cousin's house to use her TM or elliptical. I figure if I try to get a workout in on Friday I would meet some resistance from the family. Friday night we'll be in a hotel--with a gym. I figured I'd workout Saturday morning. I have an 8 miler scheduled for Sunday, then another travel day on Monday.

I am thinking that maybe I should rest this week and get back on the TM Saturday. Sunday I'll find a place for my 8 miles. Monday I'll be off due to travel, and I can get back to my hill workout next Tuesday.

Its sounding good to me, but I wonder if it will be detrimental to my training?

I am so envious of all you that did your 20, or whatever you choose for your final long run. Mine isn't until the 24th as I have been out of town. I was NOT going to run 20 outside in Wisconsin. Brrrrrr. I did go to their local gym and kept up a few miles on the treadmill. Six was all I managed to do one day. BORING!!!! I did mix it up with hill work and speed work.

I'll run 10 on Wednesday then my 20 Christmas Eve day. Can't wait (to get it over that is).

Hang in there all, we are getting closer.

Syko, you are having a tough year. You are an inspiration to all of us.

Duane

Kirsty, what a roller coaster bad time you are having with all the issues you must face. You never seem to give up and I am inspired by you.

Kirsty-Leigh, what Garmin do you have? There are 3 screens on my 205 and the 3rd screen is the one I customize to what I want. I have 4 things running on this screen and that is the one you can customize. I think you need to enter from the menu somehow. If you really need help I'm sure someone here can get you going. I'll even look for my booklet if I must.

Welcome Nos. You've found us just in time.

Mileage this LR was good, not great, but I'll take good. At least I got them in before the weather got bad. I've gotten super busy with the rest of the weekend and just now finally think I'm coming up for air. Haven't done much these last couple of days, so will have to make up for it tomorrow.

Stay healthy everyone!

Way to go everyone! It's great to hear how you guys are doing and makes me feel a little better about my runs or lack there of sometimes.

I did my 10 and 20 last Thursday and Friday. My 20 ended up 14 outside and then 6 on the treadmill. I haven't run since, but am planning a 4 mile run tonight after work.

The support of WISH is really helping on Goofy #2 in training and I know our WISH support group will help us come race day!!!
