Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

Hey everyone!

I'm stopping in quickly for a little cheer for having week 1 done!!! :woohoo: :yay:  I did a 5 mile yesterday, and then a stonker of a 6.62 (weird that I followed the arrows from the Lake Union 10K last weekend, and ended up coming in at 6.62....) this morning. It was just so hot today and I didn't get out until 9:30 (big mistake) and I started worrying that I was killing my German Shepherd around mile 4, when he started to show the first signs of heat stroke and we were still a long ways out from home. Fortunately, we shared an ice bath once we got back, and neither of us were worse for wear. :lmao: Jack is the best running buddy anyone could hope for; he's always ready to go, never complains, and is fantastic company (I even found myself saying to him about a half mile from the end, "Ok, buddy, let's finish strong, now!") during the long miles. :goodvibes

I don't have time to respond to everyone individually, but I just want everyone to know how inspiring everyone's posts have been. I have this thread on instant notification, and I love getting my email updates on how everyone is doing, throughout the day. It's fantastic to have this this support, and to know that everyone is having the same ups and downs. Only 19 weeks left; let's do this thing! :woohoo:

Finally got back outside today. When I was training for the Princess I found out that our local cemetery has marked walking trails so I started walking there on Sundays in addition to my TM work.

So, I went for a walk in the cemetery today. No running at all. 12 miles in 3 hours...then another 1/2 mile to get to my car. From the waist up I was great..could have kept going as far as my cardio-vascular system was concerned. From the waist down...not so much! Mostly the glutes. But, almost 5 hours post walk and I am feeling good.

Yesterday 4 miles of hill work on my TM. Friday strenthening my core with my PT. I am amazed at the results after just 8 sessions. XT on the elliptical. I am considering a water aerobics class...

Thanks for the info and inspiration everyone!!

I think of a tempo run as one where you're trying to maintain a particular, slightly faster than normal pace throughout a run.

My understanding, which seems to differ from several posts here, is that a tempo run is one in which you slowly build up speed, and reach your peak approx 2/3 of the way through the run, and then come back down in speed fairly quickly. I find this is usually what I do when I'm relegated to the dreadmill.

That's the tempo run strategy DOOD uses, building up slowly to his tempo run pace and then running for several miles at that pace.

I'm not sure Mel's (and my) use of the tempo run and yours are substantially different, though, rather than perhaps being a distinction in how we manage our warm-ups/cool-downs and what our overall mileage may be. Both seem to be focused on learning to move at a comfortably hard pace for longer (and longer) distances.

For my tempo runs, for instance (currently 6 miles overall, 4 at tempo pace) I run the first mile at my snail pace, then the next four miles at tempo-turtle pace, then the last mile at snail pace again.

Anyway, here's a link to a Runner's World article on the tempo run:

I'm waaaay behind in my reading :guilty:

My distance days have been ... well nil. Between weather and RL. But I think things should be back on track this week. Our last issue was this past weekend's wedding. So all should be clear.

I have been good about the gym though. Doing my upper body/core training and RUNNING (i LOVE saying that!) on the treadmill. I'm hoping tonight to get in 4 or 6 miles before the blood suckers chase me back indoors. But I've been trying to hit the gym whenever I can even to the point of showing up before they close to run a couple of miles.

I was peppered over the weekend with when the family is meeting to do a 5K this fall/winter so I have to spend some time finding one that will work for us all. Chris, sorry to say still not driving down for our Turkey Trot. My poor Cousin has to work so we are looking for another date.

Otherwise plans for January are going forward. I'm constantly checking to see where that party will be on Sunday (guessing the Studios).

But now I am over my lunch break and better get back to work & earn some money or I'll be sleeping in a cardboard box on property LOL

You may have the lucky lottery numbers, I sure don't. I don't think I had even one of the numbers. Darn! ;)

Just got back from Texas where I participated in a cycling event. I had a GREAT time. Weather was great, my legs felt great, rest stops were great. Can you tell that I had a GREAT time. :) I did the 50 mile route. Had I known that I was going to do well, I would have gone for the 100K. The century was a little out of reach for me but I definitely could have done the 100K. Oh, well, maybe next year.

The ride was on Saturday. I got up early the next morning and walked for 5 miles. Ugh. I wasn't sore from the ride but I was tired. Kept the pace under a 16-min. mile but not by much. Today is a rest day. Gotta get some training in during the week this week as I missed last week.

Here's hoping everyone has a successful, injury-free training week.

40 min TM (easy) - done 20 min ST - done

Have a great week everyone!

Thanks Chris!!! I did 6 miles last night :cool1: DH and I did a short bit of running during the 1st 5 miles and then I ran in my last mile. I HATE my garmin when I go out at night. The treed path doesn't give me a good mileage or pace update. But we got it in. :thumbsup2

Tonight the plan is core traininig with a 2 mile run on the TM.

Susie! Excellent job on the race!!! Did Cindy join you?

Saw the newsletter last night regarding the party. Still haven't figured out what I'm doing Sunday night. Still hoping to make it out the door of the room :thumbsup2

But I do know I have to give some thought to what if it's chilly this year. All my plans have been if it's been like the past couple of years. I have a large enough WISH shirt to toss on a l.s. tech shirt under. Ahh the planning :)

Hey everyone :wave2:

Well...finally getting into the swing of things. Did 6 miles on Friday & another 6 on Sunday. Last night was supposed to be a free night but since I had some time & energy I did 30 min of cross-training & a quick & easy 1 miler.

Debra...Rome was awesome & I'd do it again in a heartbeat; however, I'm thinking my second international marathon should be an Adventure one. I've got my eyes on the Great Wall Marathon in May 2010 but haven't financially committed yet. Since they require you to book a package through an authorized U.S. travel agent, I'm exploring options & adding up the costs. I'll probably wait until January to formally sign up. I'm about 95% sure I'm going for it barring any unforseen circumstances. 5164 steps! :scared1: That means LOTS & LOTS of stairs in my training future.

Here's the link if anyone is curious or interested:

40 min biking at gym - done!

Angela, I cannot begin to look at international events until I finish my 25 state half-marathon quest!! I confess though - I did check out the link. Very cool! We will expect a great trip report.

Everyone else - take care!

Pat look at you go. Good job on getting in the workouts and on posting to keep accountable!!!!!!!

Last night DH and I did our usual 5K loop in our subdivision and was busy talking about all our January plans since flights are finally booked and we actually knocked 5 mins off our time, I couldn't believe it.

Great training everyone!!!!

Hey, Christine!

How was Ireland? It sure is beautiful there. I see that you have progressed right from the Princess Half to the Goofy. My daughter(doctor beanie) is doing the Goofy too. She ran the marathon last year, then walked the Princess with me in March. This year, we are doing the half together on Saturday and she is running the marathon on Sunday. Her first Goofy. In a couple of weeks, I am doing the Air Force 10 K up at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. They have a big marathon and half marathon up there also. You might be interested in it. I wanted to ask you about the trail in the cemetery. Where do you find it? What entrance into the cemetery do you use? Are there other walkers and joggers? Thanks a lot.

Meg

Hi everyone!

60 min aqua-fit class - done!

Off to pack for DL!

Good luck Pat! If you have room in your suitcase can I hop in? I'd really like to go for that C2C medal!

Meg-I use the main entrance on Spring Grove Ave. I park to the right of the entrance across from the administration building. It is nice that the restrooms are available there anytime the front gates are open. Once you park, walk under a bridge and before long you will come to markers--red, blue and yellow. The red trail is 3.5 miles with a good amount of hills. The blue trail is 2 miles, no hills and the yellow is 1 mile, again with no hills. I plan to be out there on Sundays. PM if you would like to meet up for a training walk.

Looks like most of us are doing well with the Goofy training. I'll be adding steps in DL this weekend. Stuffing the suitcase tomorrow. That should be XT.

Have fun too all who are going to DL and VB this weekend.

I will be home, waiting to hear trip reports and living vicariously through you all!!!!

I know you will be with us all in spirit Kim. Will miss you! Can't wait to see you again in January.

oops....can I count packing as XT? That's all that got done tonight, along with a load of laundry. Now I am heading to bed because 3:30AM will be here soon. I hope to be at the DL expo when it opens tomorrow at 2PM. I'll check back in when I get home Tuesday night.

Happy training everyone.
