Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

Just catching up!

Mel: You're going to do great, like Kim said. You're doing all the right thing--plus your example is helping people like me "man up" and get out there! Thanks! :goodvibes

Pat: Great photos. Almost as good as being there. (Not really, but I'm trying... :rotfl2:) And I always appreciate the motivation of the pics and your XT. Very impressive.

Chris: It looks like we're on the same schedule, roughly, mileage-wise. This weekend is my "easy" week, so I don't do b2b LRs. This happens once/month, just to give me a break from the mental game. Are you doing b2b EVERY weekend?

Duane: :cool1: with the official start to Goofy. Auspicious, too, what with the softball game. :lmao: (Hey, at least you were being athletic. I tend to fall flat on my face because, well, I'm walking and there's a crack in the sidewalk.)

Liz: Oh no! :scared1: I hope you're being extra careful with your back. I hurt mine last year and ended up sidelining most of my training.

As for me: Last week's b2b, well, was not a rousing success. I managed my 5 miler okay, but bonked about 7.5 miles into the 10 miler (started out too late, it was hot, don't know what other stuff I can blame it on). I ended up shivering in the sun and walking back to the car. Lesson learned: do not repeatedly hit snooze. Get up and get 'er done. This week, I only have one LR, 12 miles, and I'm hoping for a better run.

40 min TM and 20 min ST - done!

Hang in there everyone!!

Ok reporting in for W1D5 of Goofy training and its not pretty. I don't feel like doing my runs or walks for that matter. I have been feeling pretty blah lately and hope it doesn't carry on too long as I really need to "get into" this training thing. I have no desire to wake up at the crack of dawn (and actually get out of bed) to do any training. I have been working up my back to back weekend runs and actually did 4 miles on Sunday (though I was scheduled for 3.5) and 6 miles on Monday (since I slacked on Saturday but I was scheduled to do 7) This weekend I am scheduled for 4 miles and 8 miles hopefully I will have motivation to get it done. I am seriously questioning my sanity for comitting to Goofy but man I really want those 3 medal - not to mention its the 5 year anniversary of the Goofy. I keep telling myself its still early and my training will pick up but then it keeps getting closer to October and then before we know it January will be here. Hopefully I will get my motivation back and soon. Good Goofy training to all!!!

 hang in there.

I know how you feel, I got so fed up with weight lifting I have taken a week and a half off, and now I feel like starting again.

You have plenty of time for training, if you need to take time off take it.

where in Fl are you?

Thanks Syko - actually I think the problem is TOO much time off in the past couple of months. I know I will get back into it - but I might just have to force myself because January isn't getting any further away!! LOL

I am in south east Florida - Palm Beach County. I would LOVE to be a little closer to WDW though - 3 hours away is just a little far. Aren't you close to WDW?

Yep I'm just down the road.
I asked because I travel 1 / 1:30 hours to get to my training runs and if they had been near you, or we live close enough I was going to offer to come and train with you. But you are in the other way.

oops - went to the midget races with my hubby tonight instead of going to the gym. We are doing a local 5K tomorrow morning though, and I will walk home from the race to get my scheduled 7 miles done.

Pat, love your new DL pic. Interesting collection.

Tricia, hope you can find yourself. You don't want to get too behind. Maybe at least try for some short stuff.

Duane, hope your face plant is the last one you'll have. You don't want injuries during Goofy training.

I am not doing b2b days yet. I'm doing b2b weekends though. I've got a half on Sunday in PA. Hoping it is good. I know weather will be my style. (and, I'm checking off another state in my journey!)

Thanks Syko for the offer. I wish I lived closer but this is where I have always lived. Maybe one day I will be up there.

Thanks Lily. I did get out there this morning and got in 4 miles mostly walking but I got it in and am scheduled for 8 miles tomorrow. That will be more running than walking (I hope) I am also expirementing with Gu, Powerade Gel and HammerGel. I did use Cliff Shot's last year only the chocolate flavor but something about them I don't like. I think it might be the organic brown rice syrup. Today I tried Gu strawberry banana and it wasn't too bad - I could deal with those and they didn't make me sick. Will try something new tomorrow. I just have to realize my times might not be what they were last year but I think I am ok with that.

Happy Goofy Training to ALL

Reporting in: W3D5 Goofy training!

not quite the scheduled 7 miles - done. DH and I did a local 5K first thing this morning, per the Garmin 3.25 miles in 44:19 for an average 13:44 pace. That's a PR for us. After enjoying a little post race food (better than the stuff in DL) Jim drove me across the major road and dropped me off in a neighborhood so I could walk home. I ended up doing a total of 6.7 miles. As I was coming in the door he was heading out - turns out that I had won Cubs tickets in one of the race drawings. Now I just need to find someone to use them - the game is tomorrow.

Keep up the good work everyone.

Let's go Team!

Didn't run Wednesday and thankfully softball was canceled on Thursday. I was very happy because my ribs still hurt.

Went out Friday night to see if I could even run. It wasn't pretty but then I remembered I had a "rib belt" from when I broke my ribs oh about 28 years ago. Yea we still had it :) So I got up early on Sat and went out in the rain. I managed 8 miles but it wasn't too fast. After I got in the groove it wasn't too bad. Only hurts when I breath or move :)

Went out to ride this morning and had a flat tire (found out before I left). So, took the mountain bike and rode to the store for a new tube. Different using the mountain bike on the roads. Very noisy with those knobby tires. Sounded like a Monster truck! But I got it and put in 12 mies. That was enough for today.

Starting week 2 after missing 2 out of the 4 days running in week 1. I don't think I missed 2 sessions during all of last years training. It is only going to get better.

happy training all,
Duane

Goofy training is on hold this week.

I was in a car accident yesterday that totaled our car, while on the way to a 10K race - I was the only one in the car and I walked away with just a sprained wrist and whiplash. The other driver was totally fine. But, after talking to our insurance company, it appears that an error was made by our agent when our policy was processed two years ago, and we (and this is totally our fault and the big lesson we learned from this) never really read our policy documents to catch the error. Our insurance does not cover our car at all... and we still owe $6000 on it, and need to buy a new car to get around. Whoops. It's a big financial hit, but the big thing is that if I had been two feet forward when my car was hit, I wouldn't be typing this right now. We're lucky.

Anyway, we've decided that we're not giving up marathon weekend. The thing that does change the trip, however, is that we had planned to honeymoon in Hawaii (our wedding was in July) in March or April. That is now out. So, the holiday days that we had been allocating for Hawaii are now free for us to change our short marathon weekend trip in to a one-week Disneymoon in January. It's going to be a budget trip but our splurges are going to be bride and groom Mickey hats (which may be worn for the marathon :lmao:) and one nice dinner at a Signature restaurant.

I missed my 10K yesterday (obviously) and I didn't even attempt my 8 miler today. My neck and shoulders are very stiff and sore, but I think they should be feeling well enough to run on Tuesday for my next day of training. I'm just mostly feeling fortunate that not only am I alive, but I'm only missing a few days of training.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend of training!

OMG Sarah....so sorry to hear about your accident and your car but thank goodness you where all OK. The car can be replaced but our loved ones can't.

Hope you are feeling better soon!!

Hi guys!

Just a quick drive-by post for me right now. I am doubling up and calling my half-ironman training my Goofy training, also. The big difference is that instead of B2B running days, I do a long bike and then a long run the next day. I am plugging away with my half-iron training for the Oct 25 Half-Ironman in Austin. As part of my bike training I have made a late decision to do the Houston Tour de Cure Bike Ride this coming weekend, in support of the fight against diabetes. I'll be doing the 62 mile ride option, which will be my longest ride to date--and 6 miles longer than the Half-Iron course! Of course, leave it to sign up to do a charity event with no time to raise the required minimum $ except from my own pocket, but hey it is for charity so it's all for the greater good.

Today, I had planned an 8 mile run, however my running partners decided to do 11-12 and dragged me along (OK, I could have taken a shortcut back), so I ran 11 and did a 1 mile cooldown. Around the halfway point it started raining, and kept raining for the next 3 miles or so. Fortunately, we did not get that really bad hot/humid thing going after the rain stopped! For now, my running seems on target looking forward to Goofy in January.

Sarah, so sorry to hear about the accident. How scary!! Glad you are okay. I hope you double check the insurance situation before absorbing such a hit.

My training seems to be on track. I have a 60 mile Breast Cancer 3-Day walk coming up next month, so I am trying to make sure I am ready for that. It is a true walk, however. They want us to average 3 mph. Of course, that is not Goofy time. So, I have been doing my training walks @ 4mph. 16 miles today in 4 hours--and I had to push myself to keep that 15 minute mile. I did not do any running. My 13.1 time was 3:15:48. After the 16 miles I did a cool down mile.

For my treadmill training I have been doing 6 miles+ 2-3 days a week. I do most of that @ 4mph, but start each mile with a 2 minute run @ 6-7 mph. I also do a slower hill workout on the treadmill once a week. I do strength training with a PT 2x a week and cross train on the elliptical at least one of those days.

During my walk today I was pondering just how to do the Goofy. I am thinking to shoot for a 15 minute mile for the 1/2--maybe running the first and last mile. Then, for the full, I can start each mile with a 2 minute run, then run the last mile or 2...

I am trying to be attentive to my nutrition, but I still eat more junk than I should. ;)

45 min TM and 20 min ST done.

Sarah - I am so glad you are ok. How scary! Take good care of yourself.

Everyone else - keep up the good work.

Are you up exercising in the morning, Pat? Or was that yesterday?

After lamenting about my difficulty with speed on Sunday I saw this short article in Prevention magazine.

Speedy Way to Slim
One simple move boosts your health and shrinks your waistline

A simple quad-strengthener--the leg press machine--could rev your walking pace from 3.5 mph to 4 (A 15% increase), new research shows. Going faster burns about 80 extra calories an hour and can improve your lung capacity and blood pressure by up to 10%--more than twice as much as strolling would. No-equipment version: Stand with back against a wall, feet 1-2 steps away. Slide down wall until knees are bent 90 degrees. Press into heels. Slide up. Do 3 sets of 12 reps, 3 days a week.

I asked my trainer to show me how to use the leg press properly yesterday--good seat and feet postion, good weight. He also told me that if I do a set with my feet straight, one with my toes pointed out, and one with my toes pointed in, I will work different parts of my quads. I am hoping this will help with my speed.

Good to know! Thanks Christine!

Last week went ok for training. Made it to the gym twice. Did a b2b over Thurs/Fri. Sadly my garmin was acting up, losing signal. So from what we know of the route we did we should have been at like a 6.25 at least and it was under that. Our pace probably was too fast for an evening part 1 of a b2b. The long day was 16 miles. Took 4 hrs 4 min. Did run over a 1/2 mile of the last mile though, darn those blood suckers! LOL Sunday was 7 miles. And Monday was another gym night but the TM's were all taken so just the upper/core workout and then went home to rake leaves :woohoo:

Tonight my plan is to snag a TM and do my usual 2 mile jog.

Chris? :3dglasses

Sarah... Hope you are doing better. :flower3:

tiberius... a 1/2 IM as part of your Goofy training? You seriously ARE Goofy  Hope the Houston ride is great!

I really need to stop by more often, you know they need to have the treadmills at the gym set up so I can read and post :thumbsup2

Hey everyone,
I'm training for my first goofy ever. :scared1: Hope it's not my last!
I'm on week 4 of Hal Higdon Intermediate II, except I do my weekly runs a little differently. I run Mon, Tues, and Thurs, cross train on wed (bodypump) and do my long runs on Fri and Sat. Sunday is my rest day.

I don't know if my weekly runs will ever get as high as the milage on the training program. Long runs on weekends are not a problem, but the 10 milers in the middle of the week may not be feasible.

Do any experienced marathoners find not doing the long midweek runs having a huge impact?

I've done several halfs, including SA rockNroll in NOvember, but only one full back in may and I've been a little lazy this summer.

Also, what does everybody else do for Crosstraining?

Thanks!

Tina

Oh, we are currently staying at OKW, but are on the waitlist for BC, BW, or AKL.
