Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

Hi everyone I am still on sick leave from Goofy training :lmao: but wanted to stop in and say hi :goodvibes it sounds like you are all doing an awesome job :thumbsup2 keep it up :cool1:

Jean - Nice job on the 8lbs, I put on so much weight when I train is can be disheartening at times, I am hungry all the time and because I am training I feel like I have a right to eat what I want :lmao: in fact when I took 3 months off after minnie last year I dropped 3 dress sizes :scared1: anyway my point was that you are staying healthier than most people and that is more important than the number on the scale :thumbsup2

Hey guys, what has everyone been up 2???

I took my new shoes back (they were hurting just walking around the house!) and am trying some new, new ones! (the people at the running store just LOVE me! lol) :rotfl:

Anyway I just finished reading the MfM book and am thinking about doing the run/walk training plan to try and stay injury free! I noticed online on the "Penguin" website that he has training plans for Goofy, does anybody use this? how much does it differ from the Marathon plan? Is it worth the $39.99 or should I just put some back to backs into the full plan?

Any advice for the newbie would be great thanks :)

Kirsty

Jeanne...congrats on the weight loss!

Kirsty...I wouldn't pay the $40 but I'm cheap. I took Higdon's novice marathon plan and moved the intermediate length (Wed) run to Friday with my LR on Sat.

I think most people have said they have not needed the b2b runs to successfully complete Goofy. I'm planning to keep up the b2b as long as I can. I just can't mentally imagine lining up on the morning of the full after doing a half the previous day if I haven't done something like it in training. For me, I had a really rough full a couple years ago and I want to work on hydration and nutrition between the runs. I am worried about injury, so if at any point, b2b doesn't make sense anymore, I'll drop or move the Friday runs.

I'm also training for a duathlon in Oct, so trying to fit that in should be interesting :thumbsup2

My plan was..

Mon - rest
Tue - short run
Wed - Med run
Thur - short run
Fri - rest
Sat - short
Sun - Long

Now, I think I'm going to go with Jeff's advice and not run on consecutive days and maybe throw in a track day with back to back runs on the weekend every other weekend.

Mooshu You need to add a line to your signature for the Castle (DL) :thumbsup2 Jeff introduced as post-race Disneyland 2008 :flower3:

Kirsty-Leigh I hope the new new pair of shoes work out. fingers crossed! I am looking forward to another longish day this weekend to confirm mine are fine. Last weekend I ended with a sore back and just general achy and was worried about the shoes. You'd think a new pair of shoes would be an exciting thing for us and yet there is always that worry. Will they be as good as my sadly departed pair? So I hope you find this new new pair is the ones that will see you thru many happy miles :thumbsup2

Mel I am doing b2b's too. For the same reason. I need that boost in confidence that I can do similar mileage before the race(s). I had an extremely high mileage weekend 3 wks back and it made me feel so good to know that I could accomplish that many miles and not be reduced to chewing Motrins for 3 days after. Instead I was fine. You would never have known I had done so much. just the typical need to stretch a bit afterwards as I stiffened up. After reading how Jeff and others don't do the b2b's I am relaxing a bit more to also like you maybe backing off if it becomes a problem. After reading about their training I am thinking of not doing as many b2b's as I had originally planned. I need to pull up my training schedule this weekend and see about revamping it.

GOOD NEWS! I managed the gym twice this week and then did a longish day on Thursday. Finished with only a slight lower back achy. I think those 2 days of core work really paid off. I am planning on hitting it again today and at least 3 days a week. If that is all I get in on Mondays due to the gym being crowded then so be it. I need to make sure my core is strong as last weekend HURT! I am also giving up for the time being the leg curls/and it's mate machines as I think my knees don't like them lately. My knee was twingy yesterday which was a new thing. So for weight machines I will work on the core, upper body, and the 3 leg machines. those 2 that work the hip for hip rotation and the leg press. they don't seem to bother me. so some progress for me this week. small steps :thumbsup2

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Kirsty,

Did you upsize your shoes 1/2 to one full size more? Are they wide enough in the toe box?

Everyone needs to remember to shop for your new shoes after you have worked out. Your feet are swollen, and you'll find a better fit this way. Wear the socks you plan to train or race in. Don't use the sample socks they have at the shop, it's not what you're going to be wearing.

I used to wear a 8 1/2- 9 shoe. Now with running, I wear a 10 1/2 EE with thick Thorlo racing socks. Yea, I really did jump 1 1/2 to 2 sizes just from running.

Another thing, I rotate two different brands of shoes over the course of 3 days of running each week. That allows the shoes to recover from the pounding, and lessens the wear and tear of just one pair.

Breaking in shoes, you want to have at least 200 miles on them come marathon day. Yes, keep track in a notepad or calendar how many miles you have on them. Typically, I'm done with a pair of shoes once they peak at 500 miles. They then they become every day walking shoes to/from work.

And finally when they're beyond use, they become either gardening or reef walking shoes, or I donate them to be recycled.

I also rotate my shoes. I wear Reeboks or ASICs during the week for short runs, then Saucony on the weekend for LR. I have a brand new pair of Saucony's I need to start rotating in...my old ones are going to be too far gone by race weekend.

{sigh} I've already screwed up my training schedule. I was supposed to increase to 4 miles today, but didn't look at the schedule and just did 3. Pooh! I think I'll go ahead with the increase to 7 tomorrow, then bump next Friday to 4 with a cutback on Sat.

I did spend some strategizing time at WDW this past week, though I'll have to carry cash during the race. I have now decided what food items I'm going to buy while running through the various parks ;) AK had a frozen chai latte that was to die for near Everest, though I'm a little worried about that much dairy halfway through the race. I'm thinking a nice glucose and protein snack in MGM with some cinnamon nuts. Then a refreshing strawberry frozen tea in China at EPCOT. :lmao:

Well they DO say to carry at least $20 with you :lmao: I was wondering about locations of things in AK too this past week but mine were more along the REAL potties  Mel you best have that Chai and wait for me, I mentioned that the WS 7 worked for me (so Jean could shake sense into me 1/2 thru) and Tracy took it that I was volunteering for WS 7 so I will have to do some cheering for a bit at WS 7 and it will take me longer to catch you now. So enjoy the Chai and I'll be there shortly :lmao:

All joking aside, in AK the bathroom that is closest to the course? I seem to recall a bathroom shortly after we get on the course in AK on the left?

Diane, I agree - the location of flushing potties is important!! There are some on the left before EE in AK.

Ever since I started training for Goofy 2009 I've been wearing 2 different pears of shoes. I wear one pair one run and the other pair the next. It has worked for me so far. Just ordered a pair of Asics 2130's as I only have one pair of 2120's left and can't replace them. We'll see how they work out. Won't be using them for a while (October time frame), but will try them out on the treadmill to make sure they fit alright.

Hope everyone is doing great in their Goofy training. Mine has finally come around to where I'm enjoying all my runs. Yep just jinxed myself.

Hi All,
Training is going well on my end. Nothing major since I haven't started Goofy training yet. Heck I don't have anything over a 10K scheduled until November so I have lots of time. Mon - Fri is usually alternate days of weight training and running shorter runs (under 5 miles) Sat is usually a longer run around 8 miles then Sunday I go out on my bike, again alternating between road bike and mountain bike. Official training is getting closer, I start up the first week of September.

I try to keep 3 shoes in rotation. One pair is usually near the end of their life and are just for short runs. Actually I am still using the pairs I ran Goofy with. Yes, they are getting worn and need to be replaced soon. I just lost my 3rd pair, had to retire them, so I will move one of these into the 3rd spot in rotation.

Chris, I too use the Asics 2130's. I can't find any of these around town as they are now selling the 2140's. I won't buy shoes online as I need to support my local stores. Just want to do my part in helping them stay in business.

Diane, that bathroom in AK was a life saver for me in my first marathon. I was not doing to well and so just stopped in to cool off. It was dark and cool which was great. Just to stop in there, splash some water on my face, clean my sunglasses was the best. The best bathroom stop I ever made and I didn't even have to go :)

enjoy,
Duane

Thanks Pat & Duane on the bathroom confirmation :thumbsup2 Flushing always preferred when possible LOL

I did some miles on Saturday. Not to bad. The core exercises are definitely paying off and plan on getting more in this week :)

More later, but I just had to pop in to say I finished my first weekend of B2B LRs. Now would be a good time to solidify that training plan, huh? :lmao:

Yeah I hear ya Duane. I had a gift card that I needed to use and I needed that second pair of shoes so I ordered them up.

I guess I did my first back to back for this Goofy when I did 3 on Thursday and 8 on Friday. 2 days off then back at er tomorrow. Probably a 4 miler again. I'm thinking back to backs every other weekend, but still working on my plan. It was a moving target last year so why be different this year? :thumbsup2

Hi Everyone!

Today was my first double digit day! It felt pretty good.:thumbsup2 Hoping it stays that way too!

Hey everyone!

Did RnR Chicago yesterday so taking today off. Went ok, not the PR I wanted but always next time!

And I have confirmed my shoes are done. After one full, 4 halfs, couple of 5Ks and a tri (along with the training) they are shot. Had the balls of my feet hurt and got a blister - I don't get blisters.

So now have to find new shoes. Naturally the ones I have and love (until yesterday) are no longer made as they now have new model. Will have to try them out.

I've got two super sprint tri's this month so have pool work to do along with everything else. I have got to finish tweaking my plan....

Hi All!!

My Goofy training program officially starts three weeks from today....yikes! I have a feeling the next four months are going to fly by - or maybe I just hope they will.

Liz - bummer about the shoes and the blisters. Have you checked to see if the old model is still available online? My NB shoes have gone to a newer model that I don't think I like as well, but I was able to purchase a couple pair online. Remember that you can use the WISH discount at runningwarehouse, or is it runnerswarehouse.com?? The info is in the welcome to WISH sticky and I think the discount is 15%. I just hate it when a company "new and improves" something that I really liked!!

Part of my Goofy training plan is to be a more regular poster, I am very hit-and-miss, although I do try to read most every day, so I hope to "see" you all more regularly.
