Good Books???

Love Jodi Piccoult, Jennifer Weiner, and Harlan Coben (the Myron Bolitar series- his other books can get a little frightening).

My book club is reading one of my all time favorites now - A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. It's not short, but it is wonderful!

I agree...the Southern Vampire Series...it is like a grown-up version of Twilight!! I think there are about 8 books in the series...Emily Giffen books are great...did you read Baby Proof or Love the one your with?

Maeve Binchy is another fav. author of mine...She just came out with a new one (Heart and Soul) but if you are looking for paperback...Quentin's and Scarlet Feather are both excellent.

I just read "Just Breath" by Susan Wiggs...another good one.

I too am a Nicholas Sparks fan. I will second a pp's recommendation of The Wedding. But, read The Notebook first (it is a little different from the movie) before The Wedding. I have to say it was one of my favorite of his books. I did like The Guardian as well.

My Mil swears by the Plum books that Janet Evanovich writes as well as James Patterson's books about the Women's Murder Club and Alex Cross series. I would have sworn that was her posting but she's one of those people who isn't a fan of Disney <gasp>

If you liked the Twilight series- try the Southern Vampire books I think the first one is called Dead Until Dark. They are the books that the HBO show True Blood is based on. They are much more "grown up" ;) than the Twilight books- so beware!

I loved the Twilight series so a friend got me reading The Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward. They are very good-but again warning they are also more "grown up" than the Twilight books. There are 6 out with another to be out soon.

If you would consider non-fiction humor writing, I HIGHLY recommend Celia Rivenbark. She writes about life in the South and is really funny. Her books are also just a collection of essays, so they are quick reads with lots of built in breaks.

Her books include:

Bless your Heart, Tramp
We're Just Like You, Only Prettier
Stop Dressing Your Six-Year-Old Like a Skank
Belle Weather: Mostly Sunny With a Chance of Scattered Hissy Fits

I got the most recent book (Belle Weather) the night before I went into the hospital to have my son. I ended up having a c-section and that book was torture to read while I was recovering. I was laughing so hard that it HURT! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I'd also recommend The Christmas Sweater by Glenn Beck

My favorite book is Summer Sisters by Judy Blume. It's one of her adult novels and is fabulous. I also like any of Billie Letts' books, she wrote the book Where the Heart Is (made into a movie with Natalie Portman.)

Hannah Swensen Mystery series by Joanne Fluke. Its about a bakery owner that solves mysteries (she has a tendency to find bodies and ends up solving the mysteries BEFORE the detectives). The 1st book is Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder, the latest book is Cream Puff Murder.

Any Nora Roberts Trilogy makes perfect summer reading. There are sets that can be picked up in resale shops from years ago such as the Born in Fire, Born In Ice, Born in Shame, Key trio, Sisters trio, In The Garden trio, Circle trio, etc . Her newest ones are the Blood Brothers. There's always one in my WDW luggage for poolside:cutie: I have them all and enjoy re-reading them too:goodvibes

I'm a sucker for Jane Austen books- Pride and Prejudice I could read over and over. Sense and Sensibility is my runner up, followed by Emma.

Good thread! I'm always looking for new ideas on reading.

The Other Boleyn Girl was a great book, pretty sexy too for that era:laughing: ...Phillipa Gregory...Ive read a bunch of her other books based on the tudors....all fantastic so far!

2nd these! LOVED them. If you like historical fiction with a little sexy romance thrown in, I'd also recommend the Outlander series. Each book is about 600 pages. I'm on book 2 and love it!

Water for Elephants - one of the best books I have ever read
Shopaholic books - great reads if you want something you don't have to concentrate on. (I love them, they are a great break from school books)
Those Who Save Us - based on WWII

I really know more than I can name (I am an English major) but it seems like any book you choose off this board will be great!

I'm reading The Secret Life of Bees right now and its really good so far. You and I must have similar interests because I have read and loved every book on your list. Unlike everyone else that has posted, I tried to read the Shopaholic books and just couldnt get into them. And I AM a shopaholic. Go figure!

Jane Green has put out quite a few REALLY funny books...

The Other Woman
Swapping Lives
To Have and to Hold
Jemima J

I'm a sucker for Jane Austen books- Pride and Prejudice I could read over and over. Sense and Sensibility is my runner up, followed by Emma.

Good thread! I'm always looking for new ideas on reading.

If you haven't tried Georgette Hayer novels, you might like them.

Anything Charles Dickens... His books are always quite long, so it should keep you occupied the whole vacation. They all have multiple plots, twisted characters, back stabbing, some romance... Thye only draw back I find, is he's very descriptive. So if you want to know about the "brown desk" in less than 200 words, then maybe he's not for you. (okay maybe not 200 words, but you get the point.)

I'm reading the Shopaholic books now and I like that it's a light read. During the summer I hope to read through the Plum series by Janet Evanovich.

Thanks to the DIS boards, I get plenty of great ideas for reading material.

Try the Janet Evanovish "Plum" series (One for the MOney) there is a series of 14 books based on a bounty hunter in Trenton NJ. They are laugh out loud types of books. Fun and easy read.

Plum books are the best vacation reads because they are so easy to get through and will make you laugh you butt off. Stephanie's grandma kills me in them.

If you liked Twilight, try the series True Blood or Marked. Both are about vampires.
