Golf Cart Rental Issue/Problem

I'm gonna play devils advocate here. . .

does McDonald's let someone from Hardee's come in and sell hamburgers, no. so why should Disney allow someone to come onto their private property & rent out golf carts.

Do yall even know how much it cost for them to have them, insure them, charge them, wash them, and service them? it totally makes sense for disney to put a stop to the deliveries.

It seems everybody is talking about the "crackdown" involving one company. Sounds like there might be an underlying issue somewhere. I never rent a cart so it doesn't affect me. Why doesn't somebody call FW or DWCO and find out what's going on.

IMHO I think there's a conflict of interest with you since you work at the fort and I always said I would hate if somebody from the fort joined this board. Nothing against you but somebody working at the fort knowing everything we do may be a disadvatage.

My biggest worry about the outside rentals from the beginning was that FW would see a decline in cart rentals and possibly charge a trail fee or ban outside carts altogether. I hope neither changes because I like bringing my own cart.

As for the outside rentals I could care less. I do think GCE made a mistake by bringing a truck with his name on it and the size stands out a ton. The truck I saw had GCE on the door and it appeared to be a roll back tow truck. If they can bring them on a pickup then more power to them.

If the fort does charge for personal carts we'll adjust to it by coming less. There's no reason to charge us when we're already paying a premium for sites.

no, not off hand but it SURE as heck isn't NEARLY as much as they charge for them, per cart, per day. no way no how. they are MORE than a rental CAR, for heavens sake! MORE than some sites! that is downright ridiculous; I would never ever rent from disney again, regardless of any new rule. We have bikes and we have feet, looks like we'll be using them more on our next trip!

When I can rent a new $20,000 sedan for less than half of the cart rental there is a problem. I had one new cart last April, other than that the carts I have rented have been nothing special as far as cleanliness and or condition, in fact I have taken 2 of them back due to mechanical isssues. There really isnt much upkeep to gold carts, the fact remains that its none of Disneys business who's cart I am driving as long as they allow carts, maybe they should look at why people arent renting from them and make it less attractive to rent from an outside source ( I doubt the recent college grads that run Disney would think of that idea )

Besides the other replies, my concern is they don't have enough carts. If Disney completely stopped rental carts from coming in their guests wouldn't be able to get a cart. Disney would run out. If I can't get a cart then I'm back to renting a condo offsite. That means I spend several days visiting Universal, Sea World, etc. They would lose half the money I bring. I'm sure I'm not alone. If they cancel ALL carts from coming in it would just be worse.

My guess is Disney knows this and GCE just got too big for their britches. The truth is Disney has a right to prevent business from being conducted on their property. In this case, though, they need eachother somewhat. These outfits make some money and Disney doesn't have to stock, service and store 400+ carts. Disney probably tolerates the situation as long as liability issues or blantant violations don't occur. I love the Fort and hope Disney thinks about this. It's not the price that bothers me but the availability. Coming from Indiana it's not practical to bring one. I did one Fort visit without a cart. NEVER AGAIN.

Just a little simple math, and you can figure out that Disney makes amazing money on carts..... PAAAAA LEEEEESSE!

New golf cart... $6000 and that is way way too high, they buy them wholesale or better

Rental $50 a day

6000/50= 120 days, now I will give you even they only have them rented 1/3 of the time.... that means the cart is paid off in 1 year. Now I will give you $8 a day for maintenance etc so that is the difference between the 50 and the real rental, and then when you are all done, they can sell them or trade them in on new ones and probably get $1500 for them. So if they keep a cart for 3 yrs, I would conservatively say they NET $13,500 off of EACH cart!!!

Why would they want to shoot themselves in the foot. Me getting a cheap golf cart rental inclines me to stay at disney LONGER. If I were giving my money to a disney cart, I would never be able to stay as long. We got used to our wonderful cart from Kenny but if push comes to shove, we will use our bikes and/or walk, or possibly not go at all OR use our points at our DVC. We've done the fort WITH a cart and without. it seems we burned alot more calories and didn't go home with extra lbs. when we went without it, lol.

The views expressed here are of my personal opinion and not those of the disney company.

it shouldn't matter that I work there. This is not my first position with disney, and I understand the frustrations about GCE not being allowed to come in, but still, hardee's doesn't sell their hamburgers @ McDonalds.

also, I know i'm not the only person that reads these forums. particpates, prolly, but not the only one that reads, there are managers and coordinators that are reading.

This is true, and when people ask outright, "do i need a cart?" i say this, no, you don't, but if you have little kids, and you don't wanna wait for buses or walk, it's highly recommended. it's your choice, and more power to you for walking and using your bike

when I worked in other resorts, even when i had a cart to use, I preferred a bike!

here's the catch, sure, there aren't enough for every family, but you can make reservations a year in advance, and cancel the day before your reservation is for with no penalty. I've noticed some places still require 20% if you cancel.

There are things missing from your math, like, ... my paycheck, a girl has gotta eat, and if you saw me, you prolly would say i need to eat more!

sure, money is made, but that's what business is.

For us it's a simple choice. If we have to, we'll take the time to go pick up our cart and rent GCE's trailer to get it to the Fort. Takes a little extra time of course, but given that Disney's cart would cost us almost $900 more for our stay, there just ain't no way, no how, that we'll be renting one from them. :sad2:

If push came to shove, we'd do without the cart altogether and put that money towards something else... like saving up for a cart of our own! :moped:

Just be careful, working and posting, as a CM. I am a former CM and I know others that have come close to losing their positions for postings on public forums. most post anonymously with no picture.

The problem with this is that a lot of people aren't able to make their vacation plans a year in advance. I definitely can since I work for the school system, but my husband is self-employed and most of our trips are made on fairly short notice. And since I am bound by the school system schedule, we usually end up vacationing during busy times of the year, so there is a higher probability that a golf cart might not be available when we are there.

Something is also missing from your math...places like GCE and Tee-Time also have to pay their employees just like Disney does. Also, they have to maintain their carts just like Disney does, but somehow they are able to do this for about $20 less per day. Not only that, Disney doesn't have to pay for gas to deliver the cart, they are already at the resort. GCE and Tee-time are paying for their gas to deliver, plus all of the other things listed above and are still able to make money. If Disney ends up banning these companies, it's due to nothing more than greed.

Like many people on this board, if Disney bans off-site rentals, I'll just walk. I've stayed at the Fort before without a golf cart and I'll do it again.

GCE and tee-time aren't banned, they just aren't allowed to run their business out of the fort parking lot. if they were banning other companies, they'd be banning personal carts, yea, it's harder to get now since it can't be dropped off, but it is private property.

and I understand the planning issues. . .idk what to tell you except to make your golf cart ressie before you room? at least you can cancel

You know I've read this whole thread a couple of times, and I'm usually of the opinion that the more money we spend elsewhere from WDW the less Disney Magic they will provide.

BUT I was a little unsure about paying $53 dollars for a cart in April, I'm definately NOT paying 60+. Hell I'll find a place that rents those Smartfortwo cars those are the same size as a golf cart.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually ban personal carts too. I am a major Disney fan (and stockholder), but I get very tired of the greed that I see (such as charging $55+ for a golf cart).

BTW-I definitely won't rent a cart before I make my reservation though. In our case, I would have to make the reservation for several possible weeks, and then cancel later on. That wouldn't be fair to people with legitimate reservations that might not be able to get a cart because I have one reserved. I would feel like I am being the greedy one if I did that!

There are things missing from your math, like, ... my paycheck, a girl has gotta eat, and if you saw me, you prolly would say i need to eat more!

Well unless you are working solely with the golf carts and absolutely nothing else, your paycheck comes from WDW as a whole. My very rough and quick math, is using the golf carts like they are a stand alone business. They charge close to $60 a day if I remember correctly, so I only used $50 in my example. So take the extra 10 times the number of carts they rent, what 250, that's $2500 a day that I allotted to run the cart part of the fort, not pay for the carts. I think that is enough to pay the CM's that do deal with the carts solely, as well as the electricity to charge them, and a couple of guys to wash and detail them. lol

The outside vendors must not be hurting the cart rentals much. Every time I have called they are sold out for our visits. .So we started bringing our own.

If Disney bans personal carts I will vacation at Disney less often. Instead of 2 + times a year it might be 1 time in 3 years or longer. Instead of bringing my cart I will tow my car behind the MH again and visit more non Disney places.
When I bring the Golf Cart I don't leave the WDW complex and I spend on average $ 4000.00 for each trip over the last 10 visits
When I tow my car instead of the Golf cart we spend just over 1/3 of that at Disney, just spending money on the site, tickets and a couple of meals. We still spend about the same amount, the rest is spent at Sea world, Universal, Busch Gardens, off site resturants and Kennedy Space center (have you ever been to KSC it's where even Disney prices look like a bargain).

It's Disney's call: Does Disney want our money or not ?

As much as we enjoy Disney, they're wearing us out with higher annual passes, higher site prices and crappy food. I realize that prices go up for Disney too but they don't have to take it all at once.

I have had my cart for 5 years. Other than the water in the batteries every summer I have spent exactly $0 dollars on it until this year. It is now sitting at Tungpo's house with new wheels, rims and paint job. I will also be adding a radio and 4 new seats before I leave with it on my trailer. I have about $1,500.00 in parts and labor. If you divide that into my 5 years it is very little compared to what I would pay disney. I stay from June to Aug every year plus at least 4 other visits. There is no way in heck I will rent a cart from them for that long. So, with that said, if Disney bans all outside carts I guess Tungpo will be painting my cart again, this time a green (disney green) and I will be ordering sticker/numbers to go on the side. I win, Tungpo wins and Disney wins because I will still be visiting.

Thanks, Tungpo, my cart looks great!:thumbsup2
