Thinking of a cabin and would have a rental car. Wondering if it is January would a cart be needed since it would probably be dark out once back from the parks. Thanks

A cart isn't necessary. There are bus stops throughout the cabin area so you'll be dropped off fairly close to your cabin. Just make sure to have a flashlight with you. I usually keep a mini flashlight in my fanny pack for that very reason.
But, while a cart isn't necessary many find them a convenience. We choose not to spend the money on something that will be sitting by the bus stop all day but others think it is a worthwhile expense. It really is up to you. Occasionally we rent one on the day(s) we stay at Fort Wilderness as it's fun to ride around the campground and we actually get some use out of it.
And be aware, if you do rent a cart you'll have to drive it to the main bus depots. There is no cart parking at the individual bus stops throughout Fort Wilderness.
