Going to Vegas on Sunday - Tips Please!

I could go on and on about Vegas (I'm there at least once a year...will be going again next Friday), but you've already got tons of great suggestions.

Just wanted to add that another great show is Mamma Mia (unless you completely dislike ABBA music, in which case you should avoid it at all costs!). Tickets should be about $100 or slightly less. Also, I've found that tickets are usually cheapest directly through the venue itself (usually available online, but not always)...some of those websites that sell show tickets are really a rip-off. I've seen tickets go for almost twice as much as they would cost if going directly thru the hotel.

As for clothes, BF and I go just about everywhere wearing shorts or jeans and a t-shirt (except for things like shows and nicer restaurants).

Las Vegas Junkie here! We go at least twice a year (more if we can swing babysitting)since it's a 5 hour drive for us. Yes Vegas really was 101 and will stay in the high 90's usually until the middle of October where it lowers into the 80's and 70's. You need to make sure you bring sunscreen and drink a TON and I mean a TON of water! The strip gets really hot and you can dehydrate really quickly and since they have very little humidity (in the teens or 20's usually) it is easy to get parched! Also bring good walking shoes as you will do a TON of walking even just getting to your room from the strip!

Here are some of the things we would suggest: (take them for what it's worth)

Bellagio- See the dancing water (at night it's really awesome) and if you like art the art gallery has some great stuff there sometimes. Last time we saw the works of Monet and it was amazing!

Caesers Palace--The forum shops are fun, the italian restaurant is yummy to eat in, there are a couple of free shows there...1 is Fall of Atlantis and it's amazing! It's by the Cheesecake Factory down there and the scene is cool. The skies part and fire reigns down. It's great, the 2nd is the Festival Fountain Show and it has anamatronic figures but it isnt' quite as impressive as the 1st one.

Circus Circus in my opinion is a dump and not worth going to. Back in the early days it was fun but now it's gross in my opinion (again take that for what it is worth)

The Flamingo--Has a wildlife habitat that you can go to for free but it wasn't all that impressive.

LV Hilton is great if you are a Star Trek Freak! They have a couple of Star Trek things there.

Luxor--has an Imax theatre and some Motion rides but they weren't that impressive to us either.

Mandalay Bay has a great shark reef. It's somewhat pricey though. It cost us in February about $16.00 but it was awesome! The Pirahna tank was cool especially since we hit it at feeding time!

MGM Grand has the lion exhibit. You can look at the lions through a big window for free or you can go in for a fee.

Mirage has the volcano for free you can watch outside on the strip and also has a dolphin exhibit and a tiger habitat. If I remember correctly they charged $12.00 and that got you into both.

NYNY has a real cool roller coaster but it can smack you around pretty good so be warned. In Feb it cost us $12.50 for ONE ride!

Paris has the Eiffel Tower you can go up into. It is about 10 bucks a person and you go up something like 400 feet in a glass elevator. Not for the faint of heart if you don't like heights.

Rio has Masquerade Village which you can watch for free or you can pay a fee and be part of the "show"

The Sahara has Speed the ride and it's pretty intense! I think it was about 10 dollars for 1 ride or you could buy a combo pass for like 18 and it included Speed and the Cyber Speedway. We didn't think the Cyber Speedway was worth the $$$.

Stratosphere has great rides on top of it but if you don't like heights don't bother.

Treasure Island now has a new show outside and it's pretty risque from what I've heard..definitely an "adults" type show. It's free and runs 4 times a night like 7, 8:30, 10 and 11:30.

The Venetian has the Gondola rides, the Guggenheim Museum, Madame Tussauds, and Time Traveler the ride. They all cost an entry fee ranging from $7.00 for Time Traveler to $21 for Madame Tussaud.

Also beware that if you do walk along the street there are PORN peddlers all over the place handing out leaflets with some not so great pics on them. Just don't put your hand out, walk by and don't say anything to them and you'll be fine. It's more that it's annoying and makes the streets look cluttered and dirty than scary!!

If your DH is at a table in a casino there is usually somewhere you can go and check out inside the casino. I don't know if I would want to be outside alone at night but that's just me.

For shows

Blue Man group is good
Mystere is good
Zumanity is good it's a "sister" to Cirque d Solei but it's pretty pricey
Lance Burton
David Copperfield
But these shows are not cheap! They are usually at least 60-80 bucks a seat (for the cheapest)no matter what you go to.

I'm jealous..as you can see I still have 38 days until I'm on my trip down there! Have a GREAT Time!! The Spa is a great idea as well BUT if it were me and you were thinking of doing a spa treatment I'd call the hotel now direct and see if they have any openings. When we were there in February we stayed at the Monte Carlo and we tried to get spa treatments and they were booked and suggested in the future to call and get treatments ahead of time.

Heidi

fyi - there is a godiva chocolate shop right beside where you wait to ride the gondolas at the Venetian.

Have a fun trip.

Wow! Thanks Heidi! That must have taken some time to put together! I will try to call the spa tomorrow and see what is open. I am going to print this thread and take it with me so that I will remember all this good advise!

LoraJ, those are the ponies I was thinking of, I just think they are a hoot! I hope I can find some of them to play!

I think we will wait on the show, if DH is winning he won't want to leave.;) (Not that he expects to win) I can hardly drag him to live theater at home when there is not the choice of games to be played! Now if the Cards, Blues or Rams were in town:rolleyes: that would be different. I shouldn't complain since he is a good sport about Disney every year!
:teeth:

We are home and I wanted to say thanks again for all the ideas! Vegas is really fun!::yes:: I am surprised at all there is to do besides gambleing. All the hotels are so different and fun to explore. I spent a lot of time just trying to see all the different "free" stuff at each one. We even came home ahead, now that was a surprise! ( One of the ponies paid off 161/1) Dh did well at the blackjack table too.

If you ever get to stay at the Venitian definitly go, it is classy and beautiful and the staff was really helpful and nice.

Thanks again!:D

My best advice to you ...... leave the credit cards at home !!!!

We're headed there September 30th and I was wondering which of the activities listed (if any) can I bring my 7 month old to? We're going for a convention in Lake Las Vegas, but I know the other people in our group will want to go out to the strip, and since I've never been there I'd like to see it too.

First let me say I LOVE Vegas... got married there, lived there decades ago......

The monorail is nice. Runs along the side of the strip your hotel is on.

DH and I stayed at Sahara (speed is good, but they wont let you wear your glasses unless they are tied on) and used the monorail all the time, but be forwarned, it is a hike from the monorail to the strip....

If your renting a car (and a lot of hotels offer day rentals) I suggest taking the ride out to Red Rock Canyon and Hoover Damn (oppsite directions from each other)

I also get a kick outta the Liberiace Museum.

Jack N the Box and IN and OUT.

Even if it is 2948 million degrees outside, in all the casinos it is a brisk minus 50. Bring a sweater.

To add to hydster's porn comment... these guys (and gals) are soooo blantent... the whack the 'cards' in their hands and wave them infront of you, often reaching over the woman and showing the man she is with.... Lots of playing card sized spread eagle (with stars) ladies on them..... Now these flyer people wont hurt you, but the whole sex thing is out there.... It's vegas's second biggest attraction. Just think of it as streetmosphere. Vegas wouldnt be the same without them.... Sin City baby.

Oh and when you see little kids being pushed thru casinos at 3 am, just tell yourself it must be the time change... they are from New Zeland and to the kids it is 8am... it helps to say that over and over.

I love Vegas, but it does have some aspects that are less desireable than others.

Just hat,
the tigers at MGM might be fun for your baby. Be aware that you will have to walk through the casino to see any of the hotel stuff. My guess is there is not too much for a little one. All the hotels have pools and that could be fun. The Mand M store might be fun too.

I'll be in Vegas this weekend for an all girl's romp. WOO! No kids, no husbands, and lots of garage bands (there's a garage band weekender at the Gold Coast).

Anyway, if you're at Caesar's, those pony races aren't far from the entrance to the Forum. DH loves to play when we're there on our mommy and daddy vacations :D

The girls and I will be having dinner at Roy's on Friday night. We are all so excited! We hear that there's some new Hawaiian marketplace on the strip as well, so we'll be looking for that.

If you've never been before, it might be fun to check out downtown and the Fremont St. Experience. It's free, and you can check out "Old LV" and the older casinos.

Have a great time, I know I will! ;)

Thanks. She actually loves the M and M commercial so that's a good idea and she does like anymails a lot so we'll see the tigers too. We go to the zoo all the time at home since it's free and she gets so excited looking at the animals. I know it won't be nearly as fun a vacation for my daughter as Disneyland was, but I really want to go so we are. She does love to swim so she'll be happy with a pool too. So they'll let me walk through the casinos with my daughter? I mean obviously she can't gamble, and I don't plan on keepng her in there long with all that smoke odor, but I would love to see the different themes. I had planned on just waiting outside with her and then switching when somone came out, but if I can take her in that would be great. The only reason I thought you couldn't was that in Atlantic City they made my SIL leave the casino with my then 3 month old niece. We just stopped briefly to tell my husband we were headed out to the pool and security came over and told us no kids allowed. Actually, she'd probably like the casinos best with all those flashing lights!

Just wanted to say have a great time! I haven't been to Vegas in 7 years and the Venetian wasn't even built back then, so I can't help you out there. ;)

The Venetian has a fantastic cafe called The Grand Lux Cafe.

It's owned by The Cheesecake Factory and very similar with delicious large portions. It's sooo yummy - I dream about it!

Delmonico's Steakhouse (Emeril's restaraunt) is also FABULOUS! It's very pricey, but you can get the same items on the lunch menu for less. YOu can also generally get into lunch while dinner reservations are booked!

Have a great time~!!!
