GLP-1 Medications

Yeah, don't use google, it is not a DR.... Also you can't just take tiny snippets like that as it can be misleading

  • Risks of Prolonged Fasting: Studies indicate that while 72-hour fasts can lead to significant weight loss, a substantial portion of this reduction comes from water and lean muscle mass, not just fat. Side effects include fatigue, dizziness, headache, and potential severe metabolic stress.
  • Starvation Response: While the body burns fat during long fasts, it also induces a "survival mode". If fasting is too extreme or frequent, the body may become more efficient at storing fat when food is reintroduced to prevent future starvation.
It can try to store more fat, but there are less building materials so it won't be able to actually increase your weight or increase your fat long term if you aren't eating anything. It temporarily tries to use your muscles and any unused stores to try and make some fat if it thinks your body will be starving long term, because fat is the body's long term energy storage

On the flip side, there are a bunch of links to say that the body DOES hoard fat supplies when denied input...

Ah well.

I don't know what or who to believe. You can get widly different informaiton depending on where you look.

I'll go with you.

Yeah, there is a lot of incorrect information out there, or correct information that is not correctly understood... You have to understand the whole picture, not just single one-liners

You can only hoard what you can get ahold of.

Analogy:
If you only have enough wood/materials to build 1 house and never get any more, you will only be able to build 1 house, no matter how hard you hoard your supplies and how hard you try to build houses.

But if you had enough supplies for 3 houses, but aren't hoarding your supplies, you can build 2 houses and still get rid of excess supplies.

The annoying thing is, it makes so much sense that your body will hoarde whatever it can get when deprived of input. Now I have someone standing over my shoulder saying that I was right the first time. I don't want to take sides!

Then they are confused or mistaken. It's fine. Many people misunderstand this stuff. They see one snippet or Tik-Tok and take it to be true when it's often someone who is confused as well and is just the first thing they read

I have debated asking my doctor about a GLP-1 but my main concern is the GI issues. I have seen people here mention nausea and maybe even vomiting but what about diarrhea? I have a functional disease that regularly causes issues in this department. I take medication daily to control it to a degree. I am concerned that taking a GLP-1 will make the issue worse. I of course will talk to my doctor about it but I am curious what others who are taking it have experienced.

It can sometimes cause diarrhea, but it is usually more likely to cause constipation as it typically slows gastric emptying and digestion. Definitely talk to your DR and see if together you think it could be worth trying it out and weigh the risks/benefits

Do you have any experience with taking a GLP-1? I was asking for others experience with taking the medication.

I have not, though I have considered it and may in the future. Especially now that the pill versions have started releasing. But I am a healthcare professional who deals with them and counsels patients about them regularly

Others can of course share their own experiences and opinions, but everyone's body is different and what side effects one person has can be completely different from the next person.

I understand that. But sometimes hearing directly from others is helpful.

Sigh, everyone is giving me conflicting informaiton. Most people tend to believe the weight gain thing. But who knows? Maybe tomorrow I shall do some proper research, not rely on individual people, Google, ChatGPT, people on the internet etc. No offence. I mean, I know you are invested in your opinion, but many hold the counter-opinion. And the internet is far from decisive.

I give up. Heck, who even cares any more? I'll stick to what I know best, affairs of the mind.

I definitely encourage you to do some more research. Educating oneself is always a good thing. Just make sure you look through entire actual journalistic articles or articles from real credible sources and not just pick single sentences out of AI overviews or a google search. This particular topic is often called "starvation mode" if you want to look for articles. Happy hunting!

If/once you read some you will see that I am correct. Long term starvation mode makes your body try to hold onto what it has left and can slow down weight loss, but does not make you gain more weight out of nowhere if you are still eating in a calorie deficit. That would defy the laws of physics.

The easiest extreme to see how this is true is that every long term anorexic patient that eats very little presents as wasting away to just skin and bones, because your body simply cannot make more mass and energy (fat/muscle) if you are not eating more mass and energy (calories) than you are expending.

No offence, but you could also be wrong… I mean, you're just an internet hashtag to me but the people around me are, well, people I know...
