Global Warming - A Giant Lie.

OK. Do you believe that the Kyoto Treaty will do anything to alter the direction of Climate change?

And while your argument shows that humans are only contributing to CO2 emissions what you failed to provide is an order of magnitude for the human contribution. Is it 1%? Is it 10%? Is it 0.1%??

I have absolutely no idea on either question. All I have commented on is the scientific fact that we do influence it in some way or other. By how much I dont know. What is for sure is that if we find alternative methods of fuel that dont contribute then this is better. Again, by how much I dont know.

The New York Times, that bastion of "truth, light and the American way", the "paper of wreckage", will not print these emails. ""It would be unethical to publish stolen material" Of course, those "ethics" never stopped them from publishing the classified Pentagon papers, details on how the war was conducted, pictures of Abu Graib or anything else that might jeopardize national security. :rotfl2:

No - That is not a valid statement.

Here is a (weak) analogy.

Too much rain causes flooding (Scientific Fact).
Hurricanes cause heavy rains (Scientific Fact)
In the middle of a hurricane you poured a cup of water out of your window into your yard (Observable Fact)
The resultant flood from the hurricane and the water you added killed 5,000 people (Observable outcome)
Conclusion - you contributed to the killing of 5,000 people.

True or false?

This analogy is poor for 2 reasons.

1) A cup of water in a flood does not positively feedback to cause more flooding. Increasing CO2 assists in temp rise which assists in more CO2 coming from the oceans which then causes more temp rise. It magnifies itself until a negative feedback system kicks in (ie more temp = more cloud cover = more reflection of suns rays....simplified of course its much more complex than that!!)

2) Although I cant quote the human contribution I would hazard a guess it is much more that the equivalent of a cup of water in a flood. Consider that 1kg of oil roughly churns out 3 times as much mass of CO2 when combusted, so 3kg. That is ~68 moles which when converted to volume is 1500 Litres of CO2 for just 1kg (ie more than a thousand times more volume). Now you do the maths on many tonnes. Approximately 4000 tonnes of oil per year is burned. That is 4000,000 kilos. Now multiply that by 1500 Litres per kilo and you end up with ~6000 million litres of CO2 per year. my figures wont be perfect as that is a very rough and ready quick calc but the order of magnitude will be there or thereabouts. And that is PER YEAR.

even if the world is getting warmer. and even if we did help contribute to that, cant the earth handle a few degrees of warmth? it has survived thru MUCH worse i would think, we been through ice ages and had half the planet covered with a sheet of ice, i wouldnt think a few degrees of heat in the other direction would really be that big of a deal in the long drawn out history of the planet. I just dont believe that we are THAT powerful to change everything in a few hundred years. maybe im wrong, but i think were gonna be just fine. Besides i LOVE fossil fuels. Hot rods and race cars and big fast motors are cool. And when i see al gore riding a bike to all his GW summits then maybe i will start listening. It doesnt really make a lot of sense to show up in a lear jet and then whine about being greener. And if the oceans are rising why is al gore buying beach front property??? silly al. haha

Since everyone has had ample opportunity to present their arguments regarding global warming this thread has now ended all discussion - present and future - on the topic.
