I was watching the Travel Channel yesterday, and they had a guy visiting different parts of America and one of the places Waldo had Fried Bologna Sandwhiches. :cool1: So, give me your ways of fixin' it. ;)

there are three ways. Pan, no pan, and microwave.
The first way you just put it in a pan on med. and flip it when it starts to turn colors. when teh second side turns colors you put it on the bread and eat.
Second way, and probably the most skillful is to cook it straight on the stove top. No pan. (works best when you have the metal things) you repeat with the same instructions as the first one, if you have the metal doodads you will get a swirly pattern in the bologna.
The third way you put it in the microwave with a slit cut in it from the center out to one edge. (not from one end to the otehr, just like a radius) med heat until it curves up in teh middle.

Down here we take our bologna eating very very seriously. :teeth:

Do you fry it in butter or oil?
I its not technically fried. Its cooked and browned, but not fried. thats how everyone makes them here. I've never eaten one that was fried in oil like that. :confused3

I've fried in butter in a frying pan - I like watching it pop up in the middle.

The fried bologna is then placed on Wonder Bread with mustard. :)

I prefer Fried German bologna sandwiches (no oil necessary) just put in pain and cook until little bit brown & flip repeat. Melt american cheese on the bologna. We eat couple of slices on a hamburger bun. I like mayo, ketchup and slices dill pickle on mine. I grew up in New Jersey and PA and those are a staple.

My DH prefers fried sweet lebabon bologna sandwiches

I melt a pat of butter or margarine in the skillet. I make a slit in the center of the bologna and a couple of little slits on the side. I fry it for a couple of minutes on each side.

Fringe the edges about an inch apart so it doesn't curl up. Flop a piece of American cheese on it just before you take it out of the pan, serve on white bread with mustard. If you want it a bit more healthful, apply lettuce to the sandwich. ;)

I do it just like a grilled cheese sandwich - You take two pieces of wonder bread - its important to have wonder bread - and slother them with mayonaise on the inside then you put the bologna in the middle - put it all together then put it int the pan with melted butter - voila - fried bologna sandwich the way my Momma used to make it.

I like thick sliced bologna burnt black. I smoke the house up when I fix it. I don't use anything else in the pan, just put three slits on the edges and cook each side until black. Put it on bread with either lots of mustard OR lots of miracle whip.

My mom used to put fry hers with onions. :crazy2: I couldn't stand the smell! I think she put mustard on hers.

I remember watching someone on one of those food shows smoke and then deep fry the baloney. It looked wonderful, but I could feel my arteries clog just watching it! I haven't had a fried baloney sandwich in years. I am not sure my kids have ever had one. I should fix some for them. I just fry them in a pan and serve on white bread with mustard. I will have to add a piece of cheese and some pickle!

I had one for the first time on Dec 31 for the first time in AGES! My kids said, "what are you eating??" DS 18 was complaining about "no food in the house", so when I saw this thread I offered to make him a fried balogne sandwich. He had NEVER had one. He hated it. He has absolutely no taste! ;)

He will probably live to a ripe old age with that attitude.

What region is this thing from? I have never even HEARD of such a thing!

I didn't know fried Bologna was popular...most kids (other than my own) look at me like I'm crazy until they try it.

I use a skillet tiniest bit of butter and fry bologna on both sides till just browned. Then, and this is the most important part, you put it on lightly toasted white bread. Lightly toasted keeps the bread together but not too crunchy when eaten..yummy!!

Ok, of course, I'm gonna make some people  with this.... but here is what I do.

I get a 2 pound piece of bologna. I take a piece of pvc pipe, about one inch in diameter. I shove it through the bologna in 2 places, creating tube shaped holes.

Then I take" part " of the piece that was pushed out and cut it off. I plug the hole. Then I pour BBQ sauce on the hole. Then I plug the other end of the hole.

I create 2 of the BBQ stuffed holes. Then I take the hole thing out to my smoker and smoke it at 200 degrees for about 2 hours with whatever wood I choose.... usually hickory, apple, or maple.

Then, I take it inside and slice it up and fry it in a pan.

Wow - papa's fancy - sounds amazing! I just plop a slice in a dry pan and fry it. I figure it has less fat than regular bologna because some of the fat cooks out.

Midwestern maybe? I'm from MI and I know it was a running joke on Letterman (he's from IN).

One tip: Don't try to take a shortcut and put the bologna in a toaster - did this when I was a kid...it sounded like a good idea at the time.

BTW, mine goes on toasted white bread with mustard.

I hardly ever buy bologna, but when I do I buy the thick sliced beef kind.
The only way I will eat it is pan fried in butter, and served on a hamburger bun.

It is fried in Wesson oil - and it is very important to cover the bottom of the pan evenly, so you should stand in front of the stove and twist the pan back and forth, watching the oil and directing it toward the unoiled spots. The ONLY pan you should use is a small cast iron frying pan. If you are hungry, you should make two -and eat them every day after school before your mother gets home from work so she doesn't know how much you are snacking before dinner.

About thirty five years later, you should probably begin to wonder why you have had a weight problem all of your life. You should never connect too many fried bologna sandwiches to your hip size.

Ahhhh, childhood memories....
