We agree it is very sad.We have booked at the castle doubletree for oure second week. This hotels lift only lets you out on youre floor. No room key no use of lift.Helps us i guess but not that poor girl.

We live in Aylesbury Bucks, thats where the fourth london bomber came from.It really does hit home whos running about un noticed. :guilty:

That's slightly worrying. Do you know what hotel? I hope the poor girl is OK.

nicknsara, I am originally from Wendover. Haven't lived there for almost 5 years now though. My whole family lives in and around Aylesbury. It's a great place.

At least they've caught him now. Nasty man :sad2:

Agreed, although without sounding like I am passing judgement and if I am reading it correctly I don't think I would let a 12 year old walk alone in a parking lot at that time of night. :sad2:

the girl is British and she fought back, so there were nice bite marks on the man's hand.
Also, she picked him out of a line up.

As far as security goes, any american worth their weight knows that even a much older girl than 12 should not be riding in an elevator or doing anything else by themselves.

In fact, in Florida, several children have been kidnapped right out of their own beds, while their parents were at home.

The US is a very dangerous country. Very. Very very. You cannot be on your guard too much. Of course there are areas of the country that are relatively safer. Orlando isn't one of them.

by the way, according to the tv news last night, this guy has been arrested 6 times!!. For one of his offenses, he received only a 6 month suspended sentence!!......the police believe he's been doing this for years and years...
the American justice system leaves a great deal to be desired in terms of putting criminals behind bars...

after being in Orlando this time around I have to really wonder why so many Brits buy vacation houses here.....it's one of the ugliest places in America, and certainly far from safe....

It can't be that scary judging by how many times you have visited.

I don't think the US is any more dangerous than other countries that people visit on holiday. The main thing is to be aware of your surroundings and don't leave your common sense at home.

You would have to wonder why the 12 year old was on her own in the first place :confused3

It sounds similair to the case of Francisco Arce Montes, the man who has just been jailed in France for the murder and rape of Caroline Dickinson, Montes had attacked a lot in the florida area and had never been caught but an eagle eyed (or eared) detective had worked on the case and was holidaying in the uk when he saw Carolines father John doing an interview on the TV there were so many comparisons between the two cases that DNA evidence soon brought him to justice.

I agree although almost everybody gets a false sense of security when they are on holiday and believe they are safe from all the nastiness in the world

The man in question has been arrested and I'm sure we all sincerely hope he never sees the light of day again.

To put a little perspective on the safety issues, Orlando IS one of the safest tourist destinations in the world, especially for the number of people it attracts (around 50 million/annum). There are fewer reported incidents here per tourist head than any other major tourist destination worldwide and the local police and hoteliers are very aware of the need to maintain that safety record. Yes, there are occasional incidents such as this, but, sadly, these occurrences are not confined to just tourist areas. They can - and do - happen anywhere. Statistically, you are more likely to be a victim of crime in the average town or city than Orlando simply because of the numbers involved. As Paula points out, common sense is all you need to bring on holiday here.

Just a quick reminder about Board Guidelines, folks. No personal attacks, please, and let's stay on topic.

That's really scary - I'm taking my 12 yr niece with me in September - and I've already told her that where i go she goes and vice versa.

I know on previous trips with her mum, she has let her go out with other families they have met on holiday to the cinema, shopping, restuarants and my sister has stayed at the hotel.

I've told my niece she can make all the firends in the world while were out there, but i won't be letting her go on any trips out with anyone without me. She can hang out with the other kids around the pool and hotel etc, but i will always be around.

My other fear is that although she is 12 yrs old, anyone looking at her would think she was older - she's bloosom into a young women in the last six months.

I know this is taking this thread a bit off-topic, but blimey - that makes three of us from the same area!

But I am very glad to hear that the authorities have arrested the culprit.

I'm an american and i visit because it's part of our home visit.
America has become ever more dangerous. I don't know how dangerous the UK is, since I rarely go there and don't pay attention to the statistics. Where we live is very safe as are many other places in the world. It's one of the reasons we like living here rather than back home in America. True there are many things we miss about home, but the crime isn't one of them.

Whatever you may think, America is a dangerous country. It wasn't as bad when I was younger (i'm 50 years old). But even then you had to be careful if you lived in large metropolitan areas. But today is unbelievably dangerous.

Tourists rarely are aware of the dangers since they don't spend much of their holidays glued to the news.

One of the reasons we have never visited the States until this year was because we were worried about the crime, :confused3 We felt very safe on the I-Drive but now I must admit to being worried that we were lulled into a false sense of security and maybe we are pushing our luck going again. Our hotel did have security officers walking around during the day and evening but to be honest I never thought anything of it that is until now.

I feel far safer in Florida than I ever do out in Exeter on a Saturday night :) and Exeter is a very "safe" (in terms of crime) compared to most places in the UK. I won;t tell you about when I used to live in one of the less pleasant parts of inner city Birmingham and was threatened on several occasions with a knife and on one occasion with a gun! Hey, the rent was cheap though ;)

I totally agree that you should exercise common sense when abroad (wherever that may be).
