Ok, I have a story. I know I still need to finish my story, but I've been thinking a lot lately about what happened to a friend of mine.
In high school, I had a DF who came to school one day very obviously upset. Her eyes were red from crying and you could tell she was really shook up. She "didn't want to talk about it" and this normally upbeat and chipper girl turned into a quiet and sullen person. It went on for about a week or two before she finally was ready to talk.
We lived in the country and her family owned a farm in the area. Typical farm - farmhouse, a couple of barns, cows, etc. They had lived there for generations.
One night she was asleep and woke when she heard a sound. She said she didn't know what the sound was but when she opened her eyes she saw a man standing at her bedroom door. She said it was dark and she couldn't make him out in great detail. She said she was frozen with fear and couldn't move at all.
I know - sounds like a dream. There's a phenomenon called the "Old Hag" where you are really dreaming and your body can't move but you feel wide awake. It's sort of like being caught between being asleep and being awake.
But it wouldn't matter if it was a dream - because of what happened.
The "man" walked to her bed and sat on the edge of it right next to her. She said her heart was racing beyond belief and she was trying hard to scream. He told her that she shouldn't be afraid and that he was only wanting to talk to her. He told her that he lived there and was family to her but she just never knew him. He said that he watched her grow up and that he loved her. He also said somthing about the barn. There was more than I don't recall right now but that's the gist of it. He walked out of the room and suddenly she could move and her screams caused her mom to come running.
DF told her what happened and she was beside herself, still crying hysterically. Her mom was obviously stunned. DF could see that her mom was not acting right about it and pushed her to tell her what was going on.
Her mother then tells her about the brother (uncle to DF) that lived on the farm that DF never knew about. He hung himself when he was a teenager - in the barn. The never told DF about him and for whatever reason it was one of those "family secrets."
No wonder DF was so freaked out. She always acted a bit different after that. She lost a little of that giddy, innocent "edge" she had to her. She never spoke to us about it again and we knew it was a sore subject so we didn't try to pry more out of her.
Sadly, DF passed away a few years ago at the age of 37.
