Getting "carded" in Epcot

Everyone else needs to also. A friend of mine and I went to Pleasure Island in June of 2002. She ALWAYS forgets her ID! I even remind her to bring it, but, she leaves it in the car for some oddball reason. So, she was able to buy a ticket to get in, but when she showed the pass at the turnstyle, she was asked for ID! Needless to say, she got a different color wrist band, the one for underage, and they would NOT let her buy Alcohol!

It is so nice that all of you are so perfect and quick to jump all over someone who is simply venting over a stupid incident. I mean , my god I guess none of you have ever done anything like forget an id and had to deal with an incident that was very frustrating. I don't think our thread starter was looking for all of your life's lessons and criticism. I happen to agree that there are CMs who do push the "law" envelope a bit too far. These laws were no to be taken to the extreme. I mean please the gentleman obviously looked well over 21 and you know what Disney managers would not appreciate a CM taking their job to the extreme. I have seen people complain and managers tell their CM to use common sense at times. This person may not have had the necessary experience to be working at the booth they were working at. Please no sdamico71 not everyone on these boards is overly critical or perfect as some of these individuals and that it is ok to vent frustration without feeling you are some kind of infereior person. Geesh, some of you need to get over yourselves.

The person that apparently bought cigarettes from me was of age but under 27 . My co-workers used common sense and they lost their jobs and got hefty fines, I guess the common sense didn't help.
Bottom line is , if you decide not to carry your ID and you run into problems like someone not selling you a glass of beer or a pack of cigarettes, don't complain or blame someone else , it's your responsibility to carry ID.

Ok, but the person we are talking about was not anywhere near "under 27." Everyone keeps bringing up "under 27" but if the person simply does not look under 27 then there is no need to card them. Period. All of you are so eager to point out that if you look "under 27" then card but as our thread starter stated her husband does not look anyhting like "under 27."

The "27" is a specific law in a specific state. It doesn't apply to anything else or anywhere else.

Hmmmm....Maybe I'm in the minority here, but at 30+ (ok, 30++++ ) I'd be HONORED to have someone card me. I always carry my ID, and have yet to have anyone ask for it! Go ahead....inconvenience me....PLEASE! :p

Carding someone in order to prevent underage drinking is taking a law to the extremes? I just don't see the correlation there. I don't care if the person is 80 years old, with false teeth, a toupe, and a walker. If the CM selling the alcoholic beverages feels more comfortable carding them, than risking making a mistake, then more power to them...more business owners/vendors should excercise similar caution in my opinion!!

No one is suggesting that they are perfect and that the OP should not feel free to post anything she wants. What I was concerned about was why she thought it was the establishment's (in this case WDW) fault for not serving her alcohol when it was her decision to NOT carry any form of identification on her. And then to suggest that the incident was worthy of wasting the time of a manager! Personally, I think that "Disney managers would not appreciate" being bothered by a petty customer who chose not to carry identification (which they are legally required to produce in order to be served alcohol) and then make a big stink about it when they were turned down because of "POLICY." It isn't as though Disney is discriminating against people over 40 who want to buy alcohol. I see no basis for suggesting that a manager needs to be brought into this situation.

My DW was carded at PI during the week of 12/7-12/13. I yelled ;) at the person doing it, not because it was being done but because I will hear it for the next year. DW is 45+. By the way..... She was THRILLED!!!

I'm with you SnowWhite....and I was inconvenienced last February in the WorldShowcase, but boy was I thrilled, honored , you name it, it was a compliment and I'm 40 years old. DH was carded too and so were all the people infront of me, nobody made a fuss, we all showed ID and laughed!

That makes no sense at all. You yelled at someone doing their job. That is downright rude.

Hi Gail,

Being new to the DIS I screwed up the nettiquette. Please see the revised post and I'm sorry you missed the tinge of sarcasm.

Nope, not perfect and definitely not jumping on anyone. Just cautioning folks to use common sense. I think anyone should feel free to vent or whatever, but, I also think opposing points of view are to be expected. Not everyone can send warm fuzzy hugs when they feel it is incorrect to do so.

I knew you were joking.

As for other posts. Please do not generalize or try and twist what I say. When someone appears young or perhaps questionable there is no doubt that an id check should be done. But that is not what we are talking about. We are talking about an individual who is far beyond that, and yes, unfortunately did not have id to back it up. That is taking to an extreme. And actually, it was another poster who suggested getting a manager and actually yes do they do like to hear from people at times. In a seminar offered to business poeple, Disney discusses the fact that managers find it good to hear from people because it assists in fixing policies that do not work or helps to clean-up customer relations. Customers are after all, as they said, the key to their success. And nobody said anything about discriminating against anyone. It is simply about a policy that at times is taken to the extremes because someone is not as experienced or comfortable on the job. And agin, she was just venting not looking for mroalistic lessons on proper things she should do when vacationing.

None were given, it was simply advice and experiences. Hopefully she wasn't looking for warm fuzzies and hugs too. :)

I have been to places that make it a practice to card everyone, regardless of their appearance, rather than miss someone who is underage. (My 42 year old husband loves it when he gets asked for ID!) Remember, they can loose their license if they get caught serving the wrong person. You can't always tell by looking - I went to college with a girl who was quite gray at the age of seventeen!

I will say that i'm one to think that you should carry your ID with you at all times. that's just my opinion....

now to just a bit of common sense people! The OP clearly stated that her husband does not look anywhere near 21 years old. now, I know some of you do-gooders out there have mentioned that it's not the cm's job to try and determine someones age. but, please, a little common sense should be exercised from time to time in this world. You guys say it's alright for the cm(or any sotre employee) to decide in the first place whether someone looks to be over 27 or over 30 or whatever age you decide to make up. If that person is qualified to make that distinction, then, maybe that person should be qualified enough to use common sense. a person who is 50 years old might not look like a 50 year old, but, I guarantee that no sane person would ever mistake them for anything close to a 21 year old. common sense people.

I cant comment on all the other states out there, but, what I've been able to dig up on Florida:

The LAW does not require a valid ID to purchase alcohol. It is not against the law for the vendor to sell alcohol to someone without seeing a valid ID first!
The Florida statue states: The vendor will have a complete defense to the charges of selling alcohol to a minor if a)a reasonable person would believe the buyer to be over the age of 21 and b)vendor carefully looked at a picture ID.

So, as anyone can see, the impementation of POLICY (not law) is done to cover the vendors own a** and there is nothing wrong with that in my opinion. just get your facts straight and quit using falty arguements.

Also, to a couple of you posters earlier: some of your statements are just silly. how many teenagers do you know that have the expertise and or the motivation to professionally age themselves in order to purchase a pack of cigerettes? that's just a dumb example......and to the poster who said that the cm is preventing underage drinking and protecting laws from being broken; again--common sense people....we are not talking about someone even looks close to 21 years old here!!!!!
COMMON SENSE!!!!!!COMMON SENSE!!!!!COMMON SENSE!!!!!

I agree with Tiggerpalz: some of you people on here need to get over yourselves...I've never seen so many self-righteous do-gooders in my whole life....

Common sense would tell me: If I value my job I will follow the procedures and rules established by my employer. Covers my butt and keeps my job. I was taught never ASSUME anything, you know what the acronym for ASSUME is, right?
Sorry you find us "so self righteous and such "dogooders", perhaps this is not the place for you if you find it offensive.

good grief. I have heard of beating a dead horse to death but this is ridiculas! I don't care if your Granny Clampett or Britney Spears if they want to see your ID have it with you. I honestly think they may try and make some folks feel good by asking for the ID. what better way to make your day than to have someone think you are under 21 when you are really 40 or 50 yrs old? the CM's are not that mean or dumb. they are more clever than you think and it seems they are doing a darn good job of creating really magical moments. (why, that CM thought I was under 21 etc..) I would have been honored and thanked them for making my day. sheesh! don't get mad about it. be happy!

OK.. Everyone.. I think we have discussed this enough tonight.. Please feel free if you want to continue to debate this subject to open a new thread on the Debate Board.. Thanks and have a great night..
