I have been off track since the beginning of the year. I have been losing and gaining the same 5 pounds.

The biggest obsticle I am dealing with is a hip/groin injury. The pain comes and goes and gets worse with exercise. And not being able to do too much exercise is tough, since for me exercise is what keeps it all going for me. Without exercise I tend to slip more on my eating and I just don't feel as good.

So wish me luck and any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Good Luck! and good for you. How about making sure you drink plenty of water? That seems to be helping me. Grammy

I had what may have been a record-setting WW gain this week, so I feel your pain. You can do this. I rely on the support of my online friends, who push me to stay on my program (WW). Meetings can help, too. Don't do this alone!

I feel you!!! 1st I had a baby which isn't what Id call an obstacle but definitely added the pounds. Not only did I have a baby but a C-section and had complications that kept me on bedrest for a while even after giving birth. I get back on track and then have to have a hysterectomy! I'm just now feeling like I can get back into the game of exercising again. My legs are killing me from exercising last night but I'm determined to push through and make it happen and STICK this time.

My biggest obstacle would be my hubby. Yesterday I had a salad and he looks at me and says "dont you want real food? I'm having hot wings, I'll share with you".:sad2: I was good though and just had my salad. I guess I should be happy that he wouldn't care if I indulged in fatty hot wings!

Good luck to you. I'm cheering for you. :cheer2:

 disneychrista. Sorry to hear you are struggling, I understand what you mean about exercise being key, it is the same for me. I hope that you can find a solution that works for you, perhaps your doctor may have some suggestions on exercise that won't cause you pain. Have you tried exercising in the pool?

I just want to wish you good luck! I know you can stick to it and do it.

Good luck. I've been losing and gaining the same 5-8 lbs the last 4 months so I definitely understand that frustration. I joined Weight Watchers online plan last night. Well the free trial but they will bill me at the end sometime this weekend. I just have to decide if I want to prepay 3 months at a time or do monthly.

I know the plan works for me. I have done very well while on plan in the past. The first time I did really well and then got busy with life. I had class 4 nights a week plus a full time job during the day. And that same thing when I last joined in Jan. I went to meetings 3 weeks lost 7 lbs and missed one and got all messed up. I had planned to just rejoin in a few more weeks but then joined a gym instead, cheaper than $13/week for meetings.

I usually have the opposite problem. I try to do both and then stop both because something gets messed up. So for a few weeks I'm working on concentrating on the eating and will add in more regular exercise in. I have a hard time sticking to it so motivation is key for me.

Ooooh, hip/groin injury. That is tough. I don't know what to offer in the way of cardio exercise other than swimming but with more arm work than leg kicks.

Can doc prescribe any PT to help get you through the injury and maybe ask doc and PT person what else you can do to help your movement.

I'd also think that if you can do any muscle building work out that might help some. Muscle burns more than fat as you already know. Can you do any arm work or maybe some lower leg work.

I'm interested to hear what you figure to work for you.

Get well soon!

They finally got the MRI approved. So I will go in for that tomorrow. After the MRI they should have a better idea of what might be going on.

I always seem to be nursing several at a time...My hip flares up too, especially if I run hilly courses.

Are you able to bike without pain? That is a wonderful aerobic exercise; swimming might also work...there are floats you can use so that you just use your arms...you basically clamp the float between your thighs, which eliminates the need to kick, and pull yourself through the water with your arms only, so you get an awesome upper body workout with aerobic conditioning.

Hip injuries are really difficult to recover from since you can't exactly NOT use the darn things!

One last thing that I have noticed, and it may not be true for you, is that the changes that I see in my body are actually a reflection of what I have done the last two to three weeks not the last two to three days. What gets me on the gain/loss cycle (and off when I am smart enough to realize it) is that if I have lost some weight, I have probably been really good about eating and working out...then I start feeling good, and I decide that I can "cheat" by skipping a workout, or grabbing a large ice cream cone instead of a kids size :rolleyes1

I guess that our short term goals always conflict with our long term goals...my long term goal is to lose weight, but my short term goal is to eat this piece of pie.

Good luck, I am rambling since I can't sleep!

Mike

DisneyChrista, while I will be interested to hear the outcome of your MRI, it sounds like you are having some hip flexor issues. The key to these are stretching and strengthening and easy running/walking or biking as Mike suggested. You would have to take it easy swimming also as this uses the flexors a lot but it would, in the same token, be good for you. Leg extensions, leg presses and forward kicks using weights are all helpful exercises for hip flexors. Once you get some strength back, squats are great too. My hip flexors flare after 8 miles and also when doing lower abdominal work such as leg raises. I have found yoga and pilates to be great for this issue.

Let us know what the MRI shows as there could be more issues here than just the hip flexors going on so we can go from there!!

Christa - Those are tough. HOpefully, they can get to the cause of the problem. I dealt with groin/hip injuries forever and had no luck with finding a exercise that didn't do more harm. FInally found the root of the porblem, thoguh adn things are good. Hope they can get you healed quickly!!! :wizard:

 Hi Christa!!

i too have dealt with similiar issues -- pulled psoas, hip bursitis, and piriformis issues. I'd like to hear your dx too, b/c i'm nosy ;) but if it happens to be anything i have faced i'll be glad to tell you what stretches my PT recommended

All I can say is MRI's are SCARY!! Next time drug me, knock me out whatever. So now all I have to do is wait until next week to get my results. I will be sure to let everyone know. IMO it is either a hip tear (that is my self diagonis, thank to webMD) or due to diastisis of the pubic symphasis which was discovered on the initial x-rays. Of the two I think the hip tear is easier to deal with/fix.

As of today I am going back to me everything STOPS at 7pm and I exercise. Even if it is just some upper body strength and stretching. The WATP's videos/dvds (other than the knee lifts) don't seem to irriate it as much as walking/jogging. Knee lifts, if I do too high, cause my hip to click (or crunch).

PS. Oh Mom - your reached goal that is GREAT!!

So far I have gotten in my exercise 2 days in a row. I actually started to walk on the treadmill on Tuesday but I started out too fast and it I could feel my groin starting to hurt so stoped.

So I am back on track,as long my hip & groin cooperates.

My 2 cents...

Stretch on either a foam roller, a tennis ball, or a piece of PVC piping if you can stand the pain.

When your muscles are sore, you've likely had some small tear or tears, and when they've healed, it leaves behind scar tissue.

To break up the adhesions in the muscle tissue, roll them out with any of the above tools.

You can also put an ankle weight on, and lie on the side of your bed, and do leg lifts.

Or get a sports or shiatsu massage, or try a chiropractor.

My 2 cents...

I am currently seeing a Physical Therapist. They are doing a sonogram treatment which is suppose to increase the blood flow to the area to aid in healing. I guess it might be working to a degree, because the pain has not flaired up since I started going. Of course there is still some pain but nothing like it had been.

I go on Wednesday for the results of the SUPER SCARY MRI.

I am deffiently back on track, unfortunetly, there must have been a greater gravitational pull on the earth this morning because the scale showed something very different.

But I am not going to get discouraged. I will keep on it and eventually the gravitational pull will change and so will the scale.

Got the MRI results and my hip is normal, which means that it like the pubic sympasis issue. The DR also believes that the clicking that I hear is a tendon snapping and his only advice was to not do things that cause it (DUH!).

So now I am no better of then I was before I started all this. The doctor just told me to call if it flares up again.
