i recently bought a 30 point DVC contract with a December UY and got the 30 points for 2017, which DVC banked and I have until November 30, 2018 to use. I am going back in June and asked my agent for help with a reservation so I could use the points at BLT on a standard studio. I was under the impression that agents would help on your first reservation after buying a contract direct, as long as the help (not the reservation) occurred within 6 months of purchase. The agent said that, since I had first bought resale 2 months ago, I was not required to be given any reservation help. Is he right about this? I'm pretty sure that I can be flexible enough to get a reservation that I would be happy with but was just curious as I had never seen the exclusion mentioned on this board.

A contract that small is considered an “add-on” since it’s smaller than you would be allowed to purchase as a new member. I’m under the impression that they’ll help a new member (first purchase) get a reservation, and it’s at their discretion for additional, larger purchases, but small add-ons will never get the help.

It is much easier for the Guides to help if you are buying a new resort direct that is not yet sold out. They can find availability in this case. For existing resorts that are sold out, they have a lot less ability to help. (Even if they wanted to.)

The agent specifically mentioned that the reason why he couldn't help me was because I had purchased the resale before the direct purchase. He never mentioned the size of the contracts.

My understanding is that it's generally help for the first time buyer of DVC when buying direct. So for my understanding the guide is correct. I've not heard of it being done for an add on. Also, even if it fell within what they would do it still depends on availability that DVC has to pull from and the BLT standard view studio is unlikely.

I believe it is written in the paperwork somewhere about helping a new member secure their 1st reservation. Those were the key words I believe. Also, that it is at their discretion. It even goes on to say the reservation cannot be modified at all if I'm remembering correctly. And yes, within the 1st 6 months was in there, too. It's in your paperwork if you want to read it, but it is not something they have to do and likely won't do for an add-on.

I don't think that it will be that hard to use 30 points by next December. I have a 3 week trip planned as soon as school gets out in May, up until my AP expires June 23. I will use timeshares but have waitlisted for May 31 in a standard studio at BLT and may do the same for June 22 or 23.

I've been very happy with my guide. He put me on a waitlist for both 25 and 50 points after my OWK contract got through ROFR. The salesperson who was my guide when I toured Saratoga Springs last June told me to call back after I owed the points at OKW. If I had followed her advise, I never would have been able to buy a BLT contract with a December UY by now.

The contract language is new member, which you are not. It also has never been any unit you want. Clsw back has limits, and a lot of welcome home bookings end up in unddclared new units or Saratoga.

Exactky.

He’s likely just taking any excuse.

That’s my understanding.

I never noticed it in writing. Our guide mentioned something about calling if we needed help, but I figured that I’m a grownup who can make reservations and it was likely unlikely to happen, so I didn’t take him up on it.

Ok, I'm confused. Will the guide help you get a reservation that is not currently showing availability or something? I know if my OKW contract comes through I won't need any help making a reservation. Am I missing something here?

For a new, direct buyer, they will. It may not be the resort or exact unit you want, but they can sometimes claw back cash inventory for a new member. They also often wiggle banking deadline for a new direct purchase.

For a resale buyers, they will do nothing.

Oh, ok.
