Get in Shape & Lose Weight for August 2014 Group

:thumbsup2 Congrats on your weight loss! I agree, drinks are such a calorie hog. And a sugar load. I've noticed that so many foods are loaded with fructose whatever or corn syrup. It's so bad for us! Awesome! We have an elliptical set up in the dining room off the living room. Right now I can see it peaking out behind a tv tray, my mom's rollator, some comforters and an air mattress (DS had sleepover :) ) Fantastic on making the full 5k! You can do it! OK, so my check in.. (you realize I'm burying it under all these quotes ;) ) I'll admit, this week has been tough. DS had his band concert (which went awesome by the way), DD had her end of year best buddies party, which included parents and unfortunately a full table of sweets, Lucy had a setback on Thursday (not sure what happened, but she started limping again), and a problem popped up with a website I designed, developed and support and was trying to fix that around my regular job. I only exercised two mornings plus one evening of "TV exercise." Does anyone else do this? Where you watch tv while you do things like squats, leg lifts, arm weights and crunches? I'm not sure how productive it really is. I've weighed myself each morning, and my weight has swung over 4 pounds. I really am attributing this mostly to stress. This 3 day weekend could not have come at a better time. I'm going to use this weekend to relax and re-center. I'm going to focus on putting good foods in my body (it's all about perspective). I'm going to be active, but not "exercise." A nature walk sounds nice, working on my yard, playing with my kids... When I'm feeling more like myself, I'm going to regroup on Tuesday and set a more focused fitness and diet plan again. Good luck everyone and enjoy the weekend!

Hang in there! It will get better!

I hope you are all well on this Memorial Day Monday. Haven't really checked in lately but I'm still doing what I've been doing. Gained a couple of pounds due to the holiday weekend and an event that we had to attend. Add to that how yucky I was feeling at the beginning of the week which led me to not getting in my exercise and you know how it goes. I am excited to share that I completed my 2nd 5k today. I was 12th in my age group out of 25 with a run time of 33:53 and 108th overall. :) My DH is all ready looking into the next one so hopefully a 3rd will be on the schedule for some time in June. So far both times have me feeling nervous before it starts, asking myself why during and so proud of myself after. Good vibes to all on our incredible journey of health!

That is fabulous! What a great time!

I ran for the first time outside today! I did FOUR miles nonstop and averaged a 13 min mile so similar to treadmill except it felt so much easier for some reason?! I think whoever suggested doing the .5 incline on the treadmill really helped me transition and the beautiful early morning weather. I wish I could always do outside but it will end up being a weekend thing since it is still dark when I have to get up to work out and I don't like to leave my kids/too busy during the daylight hours after work.

And bugs. And worrying about bears. And dogs. And idiots on their cell phones. Can you tell I think a lot while on my runs? :)

Thanks to the other "moms" for encouragement. :) Pikester, good to hear from you.

I had a nice weekend. Enjoyed myself and got a lot done. Now I need to start exercising again.

I've got to figure something out. I want to loose weight and exercise. I want to get in shape. And yet when DH announces we need to start our after work walks, my knee jerk reaction is to be defensive. Or resistive. Im not; I smile and agree. I'm not sure why I feel like that, though, given it's something I actually want to do. Maybe what I'm "hearing" is "you're fat." Or "we need to fix you" or something...

I know what you mean. I like exercising by myself because my DH pushes too much. I feel like he can't be satisfied with how I'm doing now and is always looking to the next step; the quicker the better.

we visited Philly this weekend and walked a ton. I was embarrassed because I couldn't go as fast as everyone else. But also motivated to do better before we go to Disney in August. I hope I have enough time to see some improvement.

:thumbsup2

So sorry to hear about Lucy hope she is feeling better now. As for your TV Excerise question I watch netflix on my tablet while I am on the Treadclimber and watch one eposide of at least one hour show if it was on the TV, if I watch a movie then I do at least 40 mins. After that I move to my nano for music to do the floor work as I find it harding to watch the screen while trying to get me stomach to keep tight doing crunches:bitelip:..

"Just keep swimming, just keep swimming!"

:thumbsup2 I went for a walk on Monday evening with DH and decided to run :lmao: back, while I walk faster then I run I got my heart rate up whiich was the goal (DH just walked a little quicker to be with me), so when I wanted to stop I started saying this quote over and over again til I got to the end.

That is great Congrats. I walk on a Treadclimber so I am always at an incline so maybe if I ever decided to run on a regular basis this will pretraining will come in handy

I understand DigiMom about the knee jerk reaction, my Dh has been althetic all his life and I didn't start til I had to due to my job and then real life happened with gettting hurt and all. But I am a person that has be to be pulled along most times so it is easy to say nah don't want to do it today or I am too fat or too much pain to even start. So he would suggest the walks as I can't run and I would do the same thing as you. I find I am my own worst enemy. What I have been doing lately is starting to look at this time as my own time for me and no one else. I do know that DH is supportive but he will always be in better shape then me and I will never be able to keep up.

Last night was a breakthough for me as a friend called while I was on the TC and usually I would stop, sit and talk fas she is a hour or more talker. What I did instead was get the earpiece for the phone and kept on walking :thumbsup2 which surprised me but I really felt good afterwards. Did I get as good as I usually do? No but the fact that I decided that my friend would have to listen to my heavy breathing while she talked was not going to stop me and I felt empowered by it. She actaully told me that it was the most heavy breathing she had heard in a long time so she was good with it :rolleyes1:bitelip: She is a single mom with no current love interest...

You are in the right place to get motivated and we are all here to help you on your journey.. I don't worry about speed as much as distance as you got to smell the roses as you weren't going as fast;)

Good for you! You didn't do the "easy" thing, and I'm sure by making that decision you'll build momentum and keep making good decisions when another challenge arises! Sharing victories on here helps, too, right?? ;)

I'm laughing at myself a little tonight, so I thought I'd invite you all to my "pity party."

I am sitting on the couch with my right leg propped up on a pillow and a bag of ice and my right eye covered with a warm compress. The ice is because I strained my calf muscle on the last turn of the last lap of my run today (I clocked 3.07 miles, though, so that's almost 5K). I thought it was just a Charlie horse, but that was at 4:30 and I'm still limping. The warm compress on my eye is because I woke up with a stye this morning (gross, I know).

What a pathetic mess I am tonight! :rolleyes2

Three more days until my 5K!!

I'm always impressed by someone who can do a 5k. Good luck!

I walked the dogs for 30 min today. I think I'm going to get up early, sneak in a 20 min walk and then do the treadmill at night. IDK, twice in one day, pigs may fly. I don't know how I could've let myself get so heavy, I'm so discouraged.

Don't be discouraged. Drink lots of water. The walls will help. Use the map my run app and set it to walk. Track your distance and push yourself each time to do a little more, a little faster!

Walking is the best way to start! Don't be discouraged - just look to build on each day's progress. And you will probably slip up, skip a day or have trouble getting out the door, but that's normal.

We'll keep your spirits up!:cool1:

Just getting outside and walking those steps is a win.

I'd like to make a suggestion if I may. If you can afford it, get yourself a Fitbit. I have the Fitbit Zip ($50 at Walmart or Amazon) and I love being able to see my steps. 10,000 steps a day is what you need to earn per day and more then that is just even better. It is a great way to challenge yourself to get out there and earn your steps.

I second the fitbit purchase. I have the fitbit one and love challenging/competing against my friends and dis friends ;)

I'm getting worried that I planned this trip last minute and I don't have much time to shape up. I'm going to do 1/2 hr on the treadmill or outside everyday and watch what I eat. I weigh around 215lbs. If I could get down to 200 that would help. The thing I'm worried about is maintaining stamina in the heat in August but I don't have time to do a whole body overhaul, kwim? I may have to take frequent rests, grrr.

ok, starting slim fast in earnest NOW
