Get in Shape & Lose Weight for August 2014 Group

I finally walked 10,000 steps in one day!!! My Fitbit started vibrating and flashing when I was walking down the stairs to get the laundry and I started screaming like an idiot, "I hit 10,000 steps!!" :rotfl2: Also, I feel like I have been sleeping better, and last night the Fitbit recorded "awake 0x and restless 3x". That is a HUGE improvement!

Wow I never get that kind of sleep efficiency. Awesome!

I did it! I ran the 40 minutes (worked out to about 3.2 miles of strictly running--not counting the warm up and cool down walks). I'm so pleased! I figured out that I ran it in approximately 12.5 minute miles, which is an improvement for me. So excited!!

Wow- huge accomplishment!

That is very impressive! Good job! :thumbsup2

I ran for 15 minutes. I cannot believe it- it was HARD. Next week is week 7. Today I really started to have doubts about running the 5k distance. My knee started hurting and my lower back ached- squeezing stomach helped relieve the back. It was 33 min total and my distance was 2.16.....a whole mile to tack on is probably another 18 minutes? So I'm going to have to start getting up more like 4:30am than 5am.... SCARED!!!!!

Looks like we're going to WDW on the same day!!!

Great job on the run! My knees almost always hurt when running :( Are you running on outside or on a treadmill? Also I find that if you have time, elevating your feet and icing your knees can help bring the swelling down. I have "runner's knee", or patellafemoral syndrome, in both of my knees. This creates a lot of swelling which results in pain if I don't give myself breaks between runs. An OTC anti-inflammatory can help too.

Have you heard of a book called "Running Made Easy"? When I started running again I found the training plans very easy to follow. And the really helped build up my distance/running time without aggravating my knees too much.

Good luck on your running and keep up the good work!

Yay for 15!!!!!

It is hard but you did it!

Squeezing in the stomach helps me too and also adjusting my posture. If I start to slouch I notice that my knee or hip will start to hurt but if I make my back straighter it really helps. My DS16 (he is the runner in the family with XC and Track) told me to raise my arms straight above my head to fix my posture and then lower your arms and try to maintain it.

I hear you about the getting up early. The 5K Runner ends with the workout taking a total of 45 min. 5W/35R/5W I'm now getting up at 4:35a. Luckily I only have to walk down to the basement and I don't have to drive to the gym.

Today was THE day! The final day of 5K Runner! I ran for a total of 35 minutes straight!! :cool1:

Had some aches here and there but adjusted my posture which helped a great bit. The one thing I notice is how weird my knees feel once I go from running to walking for the cool down. It's like slamming into a wall. Any tips on how to have a better transition?

With the weather getting better and better I am looking forward to yet at the same time getting nervous about running outside. I'm use to running without potholes, major inclines, stones, dirt, etc so I'm thinking I should start out slow and build up to it once I get out there. I guess we shall see.

Countdown: 17 weeks until August 1st!

What is involved in a blood sugar detox? Are you following Dr. Mark Hyman's 10-day plan? Did you have to buy the book?

Basically you are going to a diet that is high fiber low fat and free of sweeteners. Also getting into a routine. Yes I am following the book. I bought the kindle version it was cheaper.

Checking in: Hi everyone. This has been a rough week for me. I spent most of it in my sweats laying down on my couch. Things seem to be getting better slower than I'd like, but I guess I need to be patient. I've been able to use my phone, but it's too uncomfortable to sit with my laptop yet. I hope that changes soon because my work is willing to at least have me work from home, but I can't if I can't use the laptop. Food has been boring. Rice, toast, boiled chicken, fish, apple sauce, juice, you get the idea. I've been trying to get walks in around the house, but it's hard wrapping my head around activity in these terms. On a good note, this is the first day that I actually feel better than I did yesterday, so that's a good thing. I can't wait to get back to feeling like myself and continuing forward. I know I've lost weight, but I haven't weighed myself because I'm sure when I can start eating better it will go back up and I don't want to think about this process in that way. My goals this week are to continue to get better. I'd like to gradually add some fiber back in my diet and start taking a probiotic to help straighten me out. I need to keep doing my walks, so will try to set up a regular schedule now. Maybe 5-10 minutes every 3 hours. That'll give me at least half an hour a day. I need to start journaling it so I stay on task.

I really miss the routine I was getting into a few weeks ago and sharing that with you guys. My long term goal is to get back to that. I can see that taking at least a month or two. So my long term goal is to try and stay focused and motivated enough to get there.

I'm looking forward to read how all of you are doing this week. Hope things have been going well for everyone!

Checking in!

I was down a little over two pounds this week - YAY!

I have done a good job of keeping up with my goals for this week (activity, food and water), with minimal muscle aches, so I feel like I'm listening to my body and it's paying off.

This week I'm going to try and improve my time walking/jogging 5K on the treadmill by 1 minute. Last week I improved from 54 minutes to 53 minutes.

Good luck everyone!

Check-in: ate too much this weekend! We had a mother/daughter sleepover with friends last night and it led to excess. ;) I did more or less maintain at my goal weight, though, so hopefully no harm done.

I am working the 5k to 10k program (on week 3), and that's going well. I'm feeling pretty strong. Also got to ride my horses twice last week, which is good exercise AND good for my mental health. :)

That is so AWESOME! I heard running outside is easier?! I'm so nervous bc we are traveling next week when I'm supposed to do it!

Great job everyone! I weigh myself all week and ate pizza last night so I'm not checking the damage this morning. Keeping with the workout routine and trying to fit in extra steps/walk in the afternoon like I was a few weeks ago. Falling behind on the fitbit steps and not sure why with all this activity I still feel exhausted.

Thanks for the tips! I've seen people do that but thought they were just being fancy. I will try it!

My husband (who has been a runner for years) says running outside is both easier and harder. The difference in the surface/elevations will make it seem "harder" (though he said not really harder, exactly--just different). He did say that I will be faster outside, though. :)
