Geriatric mm warriors (12/30/09)

Well, its after 10pm and I am ready to get out of here!! Off to the gym then off tomorrow! Yay!

Pam - OMG, Barb is right! The evil carbs have gotten to you!! Please, try to get a handle on it before you lose control of them, and set your L and P back into insulin dumping mode...you have come too far to let it go now!! Like Lisa said, our Met B means we are not really going to be able to eat most of those things any more without suffering the consequences...stock up on the legal foods, make up some of the legal snacks...pop a dark chocolate square if you really need the sweet thing! I still sit down and re-read my book about every couple weeks or so to keep on track...maybe a re-read would help? dont forget that the scale readings are not a good indicator, since they can change daily up and down the MM rollercoaster! I would definitely not take the scale showing a 4 pound loss to mean that you can continue eating that way!! Tomorrow might show a 10 pound gain!!

Tom - glad you're back, and hopefully Rebecca will be joining you!

Lisa - sorry JP is leaving and you are sad...better go buy Bonnie another one of those bones, since she will be sad too! As for you, hows it going on step 1? I know you love step 2, but it will be a very short return for you!

Barb - LOL, ok, so now I have to make pony fur accessories for everyone? Guess what y'all are getting for Christmas next year!! :lmao:

Kathy - we actually had 2 hour school delays here today due to the cold! I cracked up! Like its any warmer at 9am then at 7am...these southern weenies just cant deal with this!! I guess we are stuck with it for awhile too, so the ponies will probably look like enormous fuzzy elephants by the time it gets warmer!!

Hope you folks have a great night and heres to a better tomorrow...had a nice chat with Ken today and got another really mushy e-card...awwww:lovestruc

Robin: Step 1 is going ok for us. We're looking forward to going back to Step 2. Didn't gain anything at all over the holidays, which is amazing since we did eat out quite a bit. My jeans are looser. I tend to go on strike from the kitchen for a few days after Christmas. We go from the most full refrigerator to a bare one, lol! I cooked a nice dinner last night. We went out with Mom and Dad after Olivia left tonight. J-P is being so good about texting me when he can on the journey. He's halfway now so he'll get to Portland about 12:30 am or so. It was clear sailing over Mt. Shasta pass so it should be easy from here on out. I miss him so much already. Seems like Christmas was a dream; it was over so fast. We should have had more kids! I should revisit my desire to do some volunteer work with children. I have a lot to give and I'm not realizing my full potential, I think. My only problem is that if they are mistreated, I'd be wanting to give their parents an earfull. I can't tolerate misjustice to a child.

Did you see that information about Passionflower?

Pam: Tomorrow give us your date.;) The 15th is fine, but you could do a lot of damage by then. We're not going to let you go down the slippery slope because we love you too much!

Didn't you all love, love, love Cindy's Christmas card? I have her picture right here next to my computer. So beautiful.

I think I'll take one morning to myself tomorrow to exercise and clean and go in to the office on Wednesday morning. I'm still a little stuffy.

Hi Tom! Welcome Back! I hope your holidays were great!

Kate, I would sleep in the rain too if I could sleep under those giant trees! I've always wanted to see the redwoods.

Hey Pony! My supplements are coming the day after tomorrow. I finally got the delivery est. from UPS. I hope it warms up there soon.

Lisa we are here for you. I know it's tough when JP goes home. Remember to sit in the sun every day. Bonnie will keep you laughing.

Barb, I love the way you check in and then say, I've got to work for a while. It makes me smile.:) Work at work? Now why would you want to do that?

Lisa, speaking of the Mediterranean Diet, I keep picturing making some kind of olive oil drizzled vegetable dish sprinkled with feta. I've never made anything like that but I'm craving it. I have no idea what kind of spices or what vegetables Greek food takes even though I'm part Greek.

Pam, I'm sorry your miserable. Please let us know how we can be most helpful for you to get through that first period.

I'm beginning to feel better tonight. It took me four days again. Weird. I must just be a slow detoxer. Is it four days? Yep, just counted. I'm mostly having my smoothies. They are good. I put in ice and water, about a half a cup of low fat cottage cheese, a table size teaspoon of peanut butter, 2 tablespoons of baking cocoa, 1 scoop of whey protein, 3 sweetener packets, as much spinach as I can pick up in one hand (it's a lot!) and a little benefiber for good measure. Sometimes a small amount of half and half if I want to the top foamy. It's very good and I think they are easier to digest than actual food.

Kathy, I hope your knee keeps improving. I heard you the other day with the pillow spray. That stuff smells incredible! And seems to help with sleep. Let us know what the doctor says.

Lisa, I loved Cindy's and everyones cards!:santa: I hope that mine over the computer came out well to everyone also. You are all such a blessing to me!:grouphug:

I tried to upgrade a program and it caused me to not be able to post. I have only re-started the computer about 5 times, but now seem to be able to post. I should know better than to try to improve things, but the slow is not my speed!!!!

I now need to go and see if something else works that wasn't working before, either!!

It will be morning when you see this. Hope you all slept well and that the day is better for everyone.

Welcome back Tom.

Hugs to all:grouphug:

Morning everyone! It warmed up through the night. We are at 25* and going no where at all :( We are to get another 1-2" of snow today. It looks pretty. Reminds me of the winters when I was a kid. It used to start snowing in Nov. and stop some time in the spring LOL. It was deep snow too. We don't have as much now as we did then, but winter isn't over yet. I saw an extended outlook and they are saying our precipitation is to be above normal.
Nell, you are sounding much better. I can tell just by your posts. I'm glad. I will have to try your smoothies. I will need to get whey protein though. I need to find smaller containers of it than what Walmart has.
Pam, I agree with everyone else. Just pick a date and stick with it. You'll feel so much better!! I took a long hard look at myself last night and realized that even though I may not be gaining, my belly bloat is coming back. NOT GOOD!! So as of right now, I'm back on track. Love those nacho chips, but not right now. I need to show my mom how easy this is.
Robin, I think when the ponies lose their winter fur, you could collect it up and knit us all nice warm socks, mittens and hats!!
Tom, will Rebecca be going us as well? I think I remember you saying something about it a while back. So glad you're here with your girls LOL.
Jocelyn, I had trouble posting last night also. Just took forever and wouldn't go to the next screen, so I gave up. Glad to see you finally made it through!
Going to FB for a bit. Have a good day everyone! Stay warm too! I vote all of us in the deep freeze go visit Jocelyn until spring. Maybe stay there a couple weeks, then head over to Lisa's, then Kate's and so on. By the time we make our rounds, it will be spring!
:grouphug:

Well finally waking up to a day with the temp above freezing! LOL, only 32 degrees, but we will take it!! Better than the 20's we have had the past couple weeks!

Kathy - I agree, we should head to Jocelyn's and "visit" our way back here to the frozen tundra!! Maybe it will be WARM when we get back! When do you want to leave? Im SO READY!!

Nell - Me too, I can tell you are detoxed and feeling better...thank goodness! The smoothie sounds yummy, but Im with Kathy, we need to find some whey protein that doesnt come in a 55 gallon drum! I hate trying new stuff, then I hate it and have a ton of it laying around...hmmm,maybe the ponies would like it?

Lisa - I think we are all amazed that we didnt gain a ton of weight over the holidays...little cheats, big cheats, any other time I would have gained about 10 pounds eating all that lobster!! Maybe it does mean that our bodies are finally starting to process better...well its about time! :wizard: This is me waving the magic "carb" wand that will let us all fight the EVIL CARBS for 2010!! I think your volunteering idea is a great one...you DO have so much to give and surely there are lots of places out there that would be so happy to have you in some capacity. I agree though, it would be hard not to say something if you came upon a case of neglect or abuse, sometimes I have to bite my lip to keep from saying something to some of these horrible people I come upon in Walmart! Screaming at their poor kids for nothing and the little ones just look so scared and bewildered...I want to scoop them all up and take them home with me...It is amazing though how good it feels to take that one small step towards making someone's life just a little bit better...

Jocelyn - sounds like Computer Wars is still in full force...sounds like you need the Geek Squad to come set you straight!

Pam - OK, Your MM warriors are set to help you do battle...pick a date and we are here to back you up!!

So excited that Dennis and Rick have finally asked for assistance in their spiritual journey to God...Dennis is asking questions and I am so lucky to have the support of the greatest church in the "Bible belt"...Thomas Road and Jonathan Falwell...they are calling me to arrange a home visit, so they can answer questions and pray with Dennis and Rick! It is such a relief to me that they will be able to have the Peace and Love of God with them in this trying journey of theirs.

I believe I am going to start marking the days on a calendar til Ken comes home...we are over the halfway hump now, and it looks like no later than the 20th of Feb til he can finally come home!! The past month has been so busy with the holidays and Dennis, that I honestly have to admit I was able to get through them without missing him as much as I thought I would, but now that things are quieter, I miss him terribly!!

Jocelyn or anyone who reads Womans World...did you notice the recipes for Farmers Cheese Pancakes, Creamy Lemon-Vanilla ricotta Souffles, and ricotta Cheesecake with Lemon Drizzle? OMG, they are all net 5g carbs and I am drooling just looking at the pictures!!

What the heck is farmers cheese? Besides something I wont be able to find here? LOL...eggs, farmers cheese and splenda makes a MEAN looking pancake!! Only 2g carbs and 206 calories for 2!!

And the article on Safflower oil definitely bears some looking into...how do I know if the safflower oil I bought in the store is not refined? Its says nothing on the label but pure safllower oil...apparently if your oil is chemically refined, it does not have the benefits that the mechanically pressed oil does....Any ideas on this one?

Thanks for all the welcomes back. I hope to get Rebecca on here, too! We are looking to get into a house hopefully very soon! When that happens, I'm sure she will love joining in the discussion.

I am definitely having carb DTs! Had the worst headache last night and this morning. It's gone for now, hopefully never to return. Having bad cravings, too! Grrrrr. I don't remember this from the first time, only reading about it. OH well, I will manage.

Hang in there Tom. We're behind you!! Here's my hand, just grab it and hang on!!! It would be nice to have Rebecca here too. Hope you get a house too! Nothing like moving for a workout LOL.
Try to have a good day, and breathe deep!!!

Barb and Kathy, I guess it would have helped a tiny bit if I told you all what I was doing huh? :upsidedow <that is exactly how I feel right now. My day starts out well enough, breakfast and lunch, no problems. By mid afternoon, I'm so hungry I could eat this house! I'm mean and cranky and all I can think about is eating something, which I do, and it's always something like cookies, or corn chips, stuff I'd normally not even have in the house. Yesterday at dinner time I gave no thought at all to thawing out left over tamales from Christmas and eating three for dinner. Saturday we picked up our grandson and on the way home we stopped at Wendy's for a burger for him. He asked for chicken nuggets half way through his meal and Grandpa went up and got a ten piece for him and ...yes I ate at least five of them and gave it no thought or concern at all. I didn't even do that before starting this WOE! I can't say I'm obsessing over it, but if it's before me, oh yeah, I'm going to eat it. I thought today that since this is hitting me hard in the afternoon, maybe I should start heading to the mall and walking for a couple of hours until it passes, a diversion of sorts. ::sigh:: This is really starting to get to me, I have less that fifteen pounds until I'm at goal, I've got to get my head on straight ..soon!/QUOTE]

You are so close to goal. I remember reading that our bodies have "set points" that they will always try to return to. I think my set point is 240 pounds because I always return to that weight and hold there when I'm eating out of control. Maybe your body is fighting you to eat more and return to your set point. As Met B's we will always need to be vigilant to control our insulin so we can maintain or health and weight. I know exactly how you are feeling  Once you get past the carb detox it will get easier.

I was on fb and found a new site for low carbers. There is a recipe there for the muffins that calls for baking powder. I'm going to check it out, see how many carbs, etc. I'll let you know how they are!!

Robin, can we leave now? It did warm up to 30*, but it's still snowing some.

My knee is feeling somewhat better today. Didn't hurt at all through the night. Trying to stay off it today again. Don't know if I should go to the doctor or not. I hate trying to decide this stuff!

Step 1 and going strong!!

Also, would anyone object if I print out our recipes to give to mom? I know she would appreciate it, just wanted to make sure before I did it.

Kathy: When you get back to Step 2 you can have about 15 tortilla chips and make nachos without beans. They are wonderful and perfectly legal. We eat a lot of taco salads on Step 2 and either have 1/4 cup black beans and 6 - 7 chips or no beans and 15 chips. Pretty satisfying!

I say, Sure! to giving your mom our recipes.

Thank you Lisa. I use the cheddar cheese Ragu makes. It's in the spaghetti sauce aisle. I also like to just eat the chips with nothing on them for a little snack. I get the chips at Sam's club, they are HUGE bags and taste really good!

Nell: I think you would use capers, olives, olive oil and lemon juice, tomato, along with perhaps wine sometimes in Mediterranean food. Simple flavors that let the natural food flavors come out. We love grilled vegetables brushed with olive oil.

Happy New Year everbody!!! It feels so good to get back into the swing of things after the Holidays. I can't believe how busy I was  I miss you all very much and I am happy to be back at work where I have access to a computer all day. I can post things from my IPhone but sometimes it takes too long and drains the battery much faster.

It is 47 here in So. Florida today and I am freezing what butt I have left off! LOL!! (A friend of mine over the holidays asked me "where did your *** go?" :rotfl:) My 14 year old asked me what my new year resolution was and I told him I don't have one this year because This is the first time in 6 years I haven't had to say I am going to lose weight. What a feeling!! :cloud9:

I need your help guys, My 14 year old son went to the doctor today and to my surprise he is 5'4 and weighs..............165 :scared1: OMG he is a Met B. I have written an e-mail to Diane to see if anything is different for kids but I am going to need recipe ideas for him, he is not big on veggies (like his dad) and he is a picky eater and like me LOVES...................JUNK FOOD. :sad1:

Tom, Are you drinking your water? LOL!!

I never had the DT's when I first started MM back in July, but yesterday oh boy I had :headache: a headache all day. Thank goodness I don't have one today.:worship:

Kate, I am sure Chloe will have a lot of fun camping!! Kids don't seem to mind cold and wet conditions LOL.

Robin, I am in the same boat as you. It is absolutely freezing here!! The temp is to be like 20* all week with snow. I was going up the street this morning to work, and ended going up the small hill broadside and sliding because they never plowed or salted the road! And no school delay. Don't know how the buses managed. These school board members who decide this stuff of whether to delay/cancel or not need to be out driving in it when they leave schools open!! I am thinking of going to the doctor tomorrow about my knee. After work today, I am back to square one. It is hurting pretty bad again. I'm sitting here with a frozen rice sock on it. I hope it's something that I won't miss work over.:(

Lisa, I didn't realize Dr. Oz knew of him LOL. I hold a lot of respect for Dr. Oz, and love his show when I can hear it. Don't get to watch it, so I turn it up and listen to it while I'm working LOL. I haven't been to the doctor about my knee. I went to the chiroprator hoping it would just be out of joint. But I'm thinking it may be more than that. Sorry you feel so down about J-P leaving. Like you said, you kind of get used to it, but you don't. I know each time my brother or sister come to visit, it's hard on me when they leave. But I know they are happy where they are.

Barb, thank you for the concern about my knee. I pretty much decided today that I need the doctor to take a look at it. Even if it is arthritis, I am thinking this is more than an "out of joint" injury.

Pam, Nell and I were wondering about the weight thing too!! I am thinking that maybe our L & P have "learnt" how to process some of the carbs the right way. And another thing, you may THINK you're eating what you want, but are you still eating MM mostly and not realizing it? That is what I have been doing. I had only been "cheating" 1 time a day. And that was mostly things like nachos, whole wheat bread, and I noticed I wasn't "gorging" on them like I had before. Just something to ponder.
Thank you for the input on the Osteo Bi-Flex. I thought about buying it, but didn't know if it was any good or not. I will have to see if Puritan's Pride may have it. They are running a sale now. Buy 1 get 1 free (I think) or buy 2 and get 3 free, so either way I get some free. I remember when Mike got his fingers smashed on the gas rigs, the therapy guy told him to take Cosemine DS. He said it is the "cadallac" of glucosamine/condroiton. He tried it for about 4 months but said it didn't help him. I will try what you recommend.
I am going to check out the Dr. Oz site too. THANKS!!

Hi Tom and welcome back!! We are on FB too! If you need the info, just let one of us know!! Hope all is going well with you!!

My mom just left a while ago with book in hand. I am so excited for her to start. I told her any questions, just call me, and if I didn't know the answer, you all would. And if you all don't, we can email Diane. She liked that we are in touch with her if we have any questions. I told her to skip step 2 & 3 reading for now. I am hoping she does well and Tristan's MIL will decide to try it. Not to sound mean, but she is quite over weight, but she is very active and she doesn't really eat a lot or eat a ton of junk food. She seems Met B to a T. So if she sees how well mom does, I can convince her to give it a try. She had commented on how much I lost between the wedding and when we went shopping in Nov. She is doing Weight Watchers and did lose around 9# so far. But she struggles with it. And like Robin, she has animals that need tending as they live on a farm. Cows, a pig, 2 or 3 donkeys, 2 fainting goats (they won't faint though LOL), not to mention the dogs.

Ok, I'm going to get a cup of coffee (had 24 ounces of iced green tea today!) and sit back for a bit.
Mike got KFC for supper when I got home from work, so just need to put left overs away and relax tonight.
Did I thank you for Flylady? I am finding it very easy to get things done in the morning, and I have the evenings to relax!!
Sorry for rambling on and on and on.....

I am so glad you are loving the Flylady! I need to get back into the swing with her too!! She does help the Holidays be less stressfull!!!

:wave:Hi again everyone!

Pam - I went through the same exact thing during the holidays. Eating things I haven't eaten in years! My son saw me eating chips on the couch and said 'are you okay?'. I've started back on step 1, it's been a week. Once I'm on it I find it easy, but starting can be hard (don't know why). I know you'll get a handle on it soon because you want to.

Robin - 'Countdown to Ken' Calendar 2010! Good idea!

Tom - Welcome back! How's married life treating you?

Nell - Sorry I forgot to remind you to order with Vitacost through Ebates.com. They give you a 5% cash rebate with Vitacost. I've used ebates.com all through the holidays and my next rebate check is going to be over $60. I shopped alot online for the holidays.

I preordered George Stella's new lowcarb cookbook from QVC (online through ebates with 3% back!). Did anyone else see him on QVC? He's not a very good billboard for his cookbook as he is quite chubby! He even said 'I'm a work in progress'.

On a sad note, my aunt died last night. She was 87 and fell and hit her head. She had massive bleeding and was put on life support. My cousins took her off yesterday and she died peacefully last night. She was a wonderful woman, but now she is with her husband and daughter with our Lord. Please include her in your prayers. Her name is Florence. Thanks.

Oh Diane I am so sorry to hear about your aunt Florence! Heaven must have needed another angel :littleangel:

This is a tough one. I don't think Diane addressed teens in her book, did she? You already have healthy food in the house since you're doing MM. Personally, I don't think it's practical to try to have a 14 year old boy do MM step1 or step2 if he gags on veggies..Is he active in sports at all? If not, get him off the couch doing something he'd enjoy. I would try to get the soda, chips, fried food, sweets and other junk out of his life. Add healthier snacks. What does he like to eat that you could substitute a better version of? Don't limit how much he eats of healthy foods. My son was overweight as a teen because I was an overweight adult. I fed him lots of junk because I ate lots of junk. He started eating lower carb all by himself in his late teens and has kept his weight down since, he's 34 now.
