Adding geotagging data to images taken by a camera that doesn't support the technology can be a headache. But a company called Foolography has devised an easy way to add geotagging data to pictures taken with a digital SLR camera. Foolography makes wireless dongles that connect to a DSLR camera and can be paired with a Bluetooth-enabled GPS receiver. The company's latest dongle, the Unleashed Dx000, works with all of Nikon's consumer DSLRs; it attaches to the side of the camera and transmits location information to the Bluetooth GPS receiver you provide. Geolocation data is automatically embedded to images. Pricing starts at $170.

Some people will find this to be a must have application, others not so much. I could see the benefit if you were hiking in the woods and wanted to capture the same location during different seasons or perhaps weather events.

I also think Geo tagging for your pictures would be great if you were traveling. When I went on a 2 week trip to Bavaria, Austria and Switzerland 4 years ago with my family, no one in the group would let me stop to take pictures and I had to do it on the fly, out the car window! :headache: I had no clue where we were! Eventually I got the idea to take pictures of the road signs so I would have a general idea and I could figure it out later.

Gotta love my family on road trips...

I haven't felt the need for one, but wouldn't complain if I had one. I embarked on a geotagging project in my gallery, completing every one of the then-thousands of photos manually, linked below each photo. But since then, I've taken, changed, or added thousands more and haven't gotten around to tagging those, so I'm fairly hopelessly behind again. Having geotagging built in would save me the time and keep me caught up...but it's a low priority project anyway, so I can live without it.

It seems kind of expensive. It costs more than a lot of GPS units. I think I'd rather get a GPS data logger. That way I can use it to tie locations back to all of my cameras and I don't have to deal with something sticking out of my camera. I tried it several years ago, but the data logger connected to the PC using some dodgy software that simulated a serial connection over USB and didn't work reliably on any of my computers. Maybe its time to try again.

I expect, in the relatively near future, that my pictures will auto keyword based on GPS coordinates and facial recognition. That should get me most place names and make people keywording much easier. Honestly, I'm surprised that I can't already do that in Lightroom. Come on Adobe, get busy.
