General Star Wars Discussion

I haven't read The High Republic books and haven't kept up with the marketing for The Acolyte, but I'm excited to explore a new era in Star Wars. I've heard good things from people who've seen the first episodes, so I'm hopeful for an entertaining show. I really like what I've seen of Master Sol so far.

Gotta get that outrage machine revved up and ready! :rotfl2:
Yep. Getting started early. 47% of the audience already doesn't like a show that hasn't even been released yet. They must be from the future. Rotten Tomatoes score for The Acolyte:

Maybe they got that D+ glitch to show it to them last night? 🤣 🙄

Reviews are pretty strong though so far, and even some of the "bad" ones cite things that I don't really consider bad. One was comparing it to the Prequels...um, yeah, that's GOOD!

Ha. RT reset the audience rating to be ineligible to review till later. Smart move but definitely gives you a window into why audience score is a terrible gauge on whether a show is good or not.

Headland is a big fan of the prequels so comparing the show to that isn't weird to me. It's a "prequel" and set in a time with multiple Jedi. I'm sure there are going to be lots of parallels. I hope she can write dialogue better than Filoni. That was the roughest part of Ahsoka for me, which I generally really enjoyed.

Audience scores for Star Wars and Marvel properties don't even mean anything anymore, there's so much outrage bait out there. It's so gross and disheartening. "We just want good stories!" Okay, fine, so why are you yelling about a story being "woke" before you've even seen it just because there are Asian people and Black people in the trailer, and the director is a lesbian? We know why. :rolleyes2

And I say this as someone who has been very disillusioned by Star Wars storytelling lately.

I'm not a Star Wars fan, more a Trekie(Really more a HHGttG), but I could understand the core fans being upset. There has been a move to broaden audience and that can have effect on core audience as you are no longer targeting them.

As much as people like to point to Star Wars' supposed target demographic, Star Wars has always been for everyone. That's why it was the biggest movie of all time for years.

Also, why should a so-called core demographic be upset about trying to appeal to new fans? When I was in middle and early high school, barely anybody liked Star Wars. I made two close guy friends through Drama Club and they LOVED that I liked Star Wars because cool, another person to talk to about it! And as I've gotten older, I may not like some of the content targeted toward younger audiences, but I'm darn glad they're still making new Star Wars fans.

While it can sometimes happen that in pursuit of a newer audience that franchise creators alienate the existing one - usually when it's a complete reboot or something. Star Wars though hasn't really done that and has stayed pretty true to itself the entire time.

How are you defining "core audience"? It's often used to mean, "people who agree with me on what Star Wars should be." And anyone who's been on these threads for long knows how narrow those views can be. (Although since you're a HHGttG fan, I suspect that you have a more evolved viewpoint. 😁 )

I think I have solid SW fan credentials. I saw the first movie as soon as it came out at a theater about a mile from George and Marcia's house. (Then again at the Coronet in SF.) I later worked on a benefit concert held for a private school in Marin that consisted of SW music. And I have a SW production design book autographed to me by George after he walked into my boyfriend's store just before Christmas 1977 (or maybe 1978).

Oh, and I'm currently facing a wall-length low cabinet that holds my TV set, several speakers from my surround-sound system, an R2 droid I made at Disneyland, and a small Grogu doll. Should I also mention the Grogu-themed accent rug in another room?

All of that should easily qualify me as a "core fan," right? Yet somehow I'm not spending my days railing about the destruction of the franchise. Do I like all nine main movies? Not at all. I've seen them all but have never bothered rewatching 1-3 or 7-9. I've seen a couple of the related movies. I really like some of the series Disney has done but haven't bothered watching others. I'm glad that the franchise no longer has all-White casts and that they're diversifying other aspects of the characters, too.

So here I am, an original core fan: is Disney "targeting" me? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Not every movie or TV series is going to appeal to every subset of SW fans. So what? I'm not the center of the universe and my preferences (or anyone else's) shouldn't limit what Disney does with SW.

Ironically, the one time they did a reboot, it was the Legends content that was what I grew up with, so I should be one of the most disillusioned fans. :D When the reboot happened I was excited for new stories, but now I've come to miss Legends a lot, mostly the potential of those stories since I didn't like the way that timeline ended. But, instead of post nasty Facebook and YouTube comments, I just read and write fanfic. :P

You sound like a core fan

I mean there's probably more to it than just having asian and black people in the trailer and having a lesbian director.

I said “before most people have seen the show.” That’s not criticizing the content, it’s making a statement.

I"m just waiting, ignoring all the hype-good and bad. I'll just see what it's all about at 8PM central....then I'll digest it, think on it all, and probably watch again tomorrow, and see how it settles. Usually I need a couple of viewings for it all to sink in, first time I"m often just taking it all in.

Making a movie or a show for everyone but the largest portion of your potential audience is a poor bet when trying to make money.
So you're saying that there are narrow-minded white men who won't watch "The Acolyte" because (if you're right about the casting) none of the main characters are white men? Wow, that sure says a lot—none of it good—about those men. And just think of all the wonderful movies and TV shows from Asia and other non-white areas of the world that those poor souls have missed out on because of their fragile egos. 😥

Somehow I've managed to watch a lot of Star Wars over the years even though I don't recall my demographic of Irish-American women ever having been represented. Guess I'll have to start getting huffy about that! I'll compose an irate letter to Disney right away...
