General Star Wars Discussion

So you're saying that there are narrow-minded white men who won't watch "The Acolyte" because (if you're right about the casting) none of the main characters are white men?
No, I’m saying there are white men who won’t watch it, but mostly white teens and preteens. Or maybe they will watch it once but not several times, like they might if it contained a white male protagonist. And they certainly won’t buy as many action figures or other toys.

All I know is all this debate would have made one heck of a Star Trek episode. You know to us older fans before it went all Next Genration with all the floor plans for every deck and to many characters to remember.

BY the way. I turned HHGttG. You know why because it stunk.
Here my review.

I loved Colfer's Highfire and hope there will be a sequel, but yeah, his HHGttG book was very disappointing. So I don't think you've turned on the Guide books; I would say that wasn't really one of them, even if it was authorized by Adams' estate.

(And I think TNG was the best Star Trek series, even though TOS will always be first in my heart.)

Actually like next Generation(the ones I saw) was just trying to make point and I didn’t know any other series names.
I liked Eon’s little smart fairy person story forget name. Was surprised he wrote something so bad.

I'm not sure why Star Trek fans are less chuddy than Star Wars fans on diversity. Maybe it's due to Star Trek being innovators in the field maybe back when people weren't so culture warrish like having a female Starfleet captain and Cisco being in charge of Deep Space Nine back in the 90s. I don't see whining over the Michelle Yeoh one so it's not just because that was pre-outrage merchants.

Toy sales are no longer a good measure of popularity. Video games and Legos rule the day now. Go into a Lego store and tell me what's one of the most visible brands in that store. It's Star Wars. Star Wars video games have done really well.

There has been some whining about Discovery, but most of it is about the actuall quality of the show, or lack therof. Some people don't like that Sonequa Martin-Green is the lead for...those reasons, but most of the Trek fan criticism has been about the show.

I didn't care for it personally either, but, you know what I don't do is constantly hop on message boards to rip it and its fans apart. I might ocassionally offer my take if prompted, but I can leave it at that. The show ain't for me - I've got other things to spend my time on.

Yes, I really enjoyed it. Felt a lot like Russian Doll did, obviously without the humor she brought to it.

Only got a chance to watch the first episode, but I enjoyed it. Looking forward to more to see if it holds up. I really like Master Sol.

Okay, I know my early review was so detailed, but now that I have digested it let me elaborate:

First of all, I love the production design. The way they have actually made ships and droids look older - even though the tech hasn't changed that much, there is a less refined quality. It also all looks so cool. I really like the Pip Droid multi-tool and the concept that only droids can legally do exterior ship work in space, but some continue to use people, presumably because it's cheaper, All of that was so good. I remained unspoiled on everything, so didn't realize that Amandla was playing two characters. I was definitely feeling like something was off, and I am glad that they just revealed that part early. I really like our core characters, though I kinda love to hate Yord - he's pretty uptight, eh? Anyway, the combat and force-use has been cool, and the mystery is interesting - what really happened that day? In some cases the characters are a little stupid - like just kind of letting that guy go and keeping an eye on him from the balcony with binoculars - so inconspicuous? "I put my binocs down for a second and he's gone!" Yeah, nice job, guys. 🙄 But, you know, it seems like the Jedi are hardly ever doing anything like this about now - it's new territory for most of them. At the end we meet Kelnacca - don't mess with that guy!"

Anyway, I found myself really likeing it. The comparisons to the Prequels are apt - and also a good thing! So far it's everything Star Wars should be.

Why are white men unable to watch or enjoy shows where they aren't the main character? Every other demographic does it just fine.

Shocked you like it……I mean utterly shocking. Sorry for my brief bought of sarcasm there.

Star Wars is just way smaller now and will never be the cultural icon it once was….and I guess that’s fine. Didn’t have to be that way, but appears to be KKs MO…..so it is what it is. Star Wars is a niche IP now, being made for a niche audience.

Well, that may not be entirely true. I was talking to my friend who came over to watch last night about just that. Someone we know has been very unenthusiastic about this show and he seems to do that with a lot of things with a certain commonality. It is interesting though because people talk about how important it is to see oneself represented on screen - hence the push for more diversity. I can remember when I worked at Blockbuster back in the day - people would come in and specifically ask for movies with primarily only black characters or they would only rent such. I guess people want to see something closer to their own experience that they can relate to - it's not something I have ever really understood. Of course, Star Wars isn't really close to anyone's experience and I tend to see movies as escapism so I don't want them to be too close to life really, but that's my perspective. There is something to it for a lot of people though, and even though it sounds ridiculous for white people to clamour for more white-led movies, it is probably a phychologically similar mechanism. I'm not sure it's a good one for anybody - though it doesn't apply to everybody either. That's just my amatuer observation though.

So I like Mae....
I like that she is kinda dorky as an acolyte. She deems like a silly teen more than a Sith hopeful which is endearing to me. She is supposed to be killing without a weapon yet every time so far she has been unable to do so, even going so far as to hope to lie to Master about the poison. I noticed she keeps reaching for the sabers on Indira and Sol.. but she did not take Indira's saber after she fell. I wonder if part of the no weapon thing is she has to take the Jedi saber and use it against them.

Do they? I doubt it. I bet black males are more likely to watch a movie with a black male lead than a white male or female, and the same goes for any race or sex. Humans are more likely to enjoy a hero they identify with.

Of course, some people aren’t “clamoring” for more white heroes, but instead pointing out it’s more difficult for stories without them to succeed. Especially as we get more and more stories without them.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. Personally, I don't really feel that way - never have, but a lot of people do seem to.
