General Star Wars Discussion

Yeah, that's what I was talking about.
Yes, I responded to the other poster before I read your comments. I could have saved some typing. Hopefully once my wife and I finish Queen Charlotte I can talk her into watching the Acolyte. Then I can come back to this thread. Until then I’m going to avoid it so nothing gets spoiled.

Do they? I doubt it. I bet black males are more likely to watch a movie with a black male lead than a white male or female, and the same goes for any race or sex. Humans are more likely to enjoy a hero they identify with.
I'm a woman and I love watching Band of Brothers.

I don't think that everyone feels that way - I certainly don't. But I have observed it in others. I mean, a lot of women do prefer female leads - hence the term "chick flick." Certianly not all women like that type of thing, but it's not uncommon. It seems weird, but it's exactly why people want to see more of themselves on screen. Personally, I wonder if the focus on our differences or identifying strictly with our own is a good thing, but that gets into a whole deeper level than just what movies we like.

There are exceptions to every rule, but they are called rules for a reason. People (men and women) like muscular fit dudes in superhero roles. Hollywood went away from that model and the box office has responded accordingly. I love Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, and Rogue……but it’s pretty hard to deny that the dudes are what drove a significant part of the MCU at its height.

Star Wars was a male centric franchise and the majority of its fan base was male. Yes, there were always female fans, but there were significantly more males. The focus has changed and now SW is catering to more marginalized groups, and this is damaging the interests of the male fans. It’s fine and I consider it kinda like what Brie Larson said about A Wrinkle In Time…..It’s simply not made for me. I just simply think the Acolyte is simply not made for me. However, when it fails to move the needle and gain mass popularity……males will be blamed for not liking it, as this is the standard MO of Hollywood.

I'm going to re-watch today.
I'll mostly stick to the positives....
I very, very much liked the variety in Jedi personalities that we're getting. I like seeing Jedi be somewhat devious, keeping these goings on hush hush.
REALLY, really liked Yord. He's a pompous sort, like Mace Windu.
Liked Jecki, looks and voice.
Sol got more interesting in the second episode. Initially his acting was not all that, but it also improved, and loved watching the tussle with Mae, and just his overall presence.
Loved the scenes of Torbin just floating, with that impenetrable force around that he created. That was a really cool Jedi ability. Took me a while to figure out what it reminded me of-that movie the Golden Child.
I wonder what all they're hiding, something so bad, a Jedi would commit suicide after asking for forgiveness. I never thought a Jedi would do that. Sol seemed to be hiding some truth too.
Enjoyed Qimir's character. He's very down to earth, tell it like it is, squirrely sort. Sounded more natural in his acting, unlike others who sounded forced.
I don't think Osha/Mae are very well acted at all. Her delivery is just all over the place, and not well done. Those are the characters I care the least about, and they're the main ones.....
I didn't like the editing. Very reminiscent of Attack of the Clones, with overly short scenes, quick cutaways, and felt very choppy at time.
If grading, I'd give ep 1 a C, and ep 2 a B+.
I might change those upon rewatch, or the more I think about them.

I know it's early (and I will keep watching), but

since they already killed Trinity (the only one I care about) they can kill everybody else IMO. Not hooked in the least to anybody I've seen."

Watched the second episode. I'm intrigued by the mystery and what the heck happened on Osha's home planet. I'm interested in learning more about the galaxy at this point in time, and it's nice to get away from the Empire/Rebellion conflict and the Skywalkers. I'm not super intrigued as I was by Andor or the first seasons of Mando, though. Part of it is my issue with the Jedi Order as a whole. For me, they're always so stoic that it's hard to root for them or see them as normal people. (Which is ironic, since I loved Luke's Jedi Order in Legends, but I always feel like the Jedi are better portrayed in books anyway.)

I am really apprehensive about this series after watching Ashoka and the first 2 episodes. It feels like these recent Stars Wars D+ stuff is digging into the Clone Wars Arc about the Ones (Father, Son and Daughter). That Arc is fine, but I think by doing so this series may start making significant changes to The Force and how it has been defined by characters in previous movies and books. If that's what is going to be the route that Star Wars wants to take, I'm just not interested.

Also, can someone explain to me how Master Indara's early line that there is an unidentified/unknown Force user? I don't get that line. The Jedi aren't the only Force users in the galaxy and they do not reach every person in the galaxy (i.e. Anakin was found by happenstance). How could they have a list of known or identified Force users? Just weird.

Well, they do have a list of known Force users. They do not have a list of unknown of course, and Indara is simply stating that she has encountered someone who is not one of the known. I don't think she is necessarily terribly surprised by that other than the advanced trainning and aggressive nature of this person.

I'm thinking maybe she was meaning an unknown Force user for that planet. It appears Jedi have set up hovels on these planets like the one where the monk Jedi was. They are the protectors of that area/keepers of the peace like a sheriff. Notice Indara was referenced as "your Jedi" when her location was inquired about in the opening scene.

I saw someone else make this parallel about Indara and it makes sense to me:

She is similar to Drew Barrymore's character in the first Scream movie. Her death sets the events of the movie in motion and it was designed to shock the audience that anyone could be killed. Indara and the monk will be featured in flashbacks according to the trailers

Then why did the show's opening discuss that there were a few who learned the Force in secret. The best I can figure is that the Jedi are now like an Auror in Harry Potter to chase down those who performs unauthorized magic in a muggle world. It is like the Force police and the Jedi get to control who wields the Force, I guess.

For much for over 1000 years the Jedi were guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy. Add Force police officer that coldly calls in unidentified Force users.

If Indara is unsurprised by an unidentified Force user, then why ask the person "Who trained you?" The Jedi have the list of persons to do the training.

No, I said she may be surprised by the training, but not that there is a Force user out there. Most of them are probably not nearly at that level.

I think the insinuation that I got was the Jedi are for the most part in control of the majority of skilled people who wield the force. I think that fighting Mae demonstrated that she had different abilities/use of them/style (however you call it) that clearly identified her as s skilled non jedi force user and I think that is the key, that mild powers are one thing, but full on skilled use is another and not something allowed to be free without the Jedi control or interest, Hence the interest in who trained Mae. Like Qmir said... the Jedi justify a global dominance in the name of peace

You know with all the diversity push that Disney is making IMO the best one of these roles I have seen done is Domino in Deadpool 2.
And no one seemed upset, at least in part because the performance and writing was fantastic.

I have seen this written quite a bit especially about this show. But to be honest I am not the biggest fan but I always thought that the jedi worked for the Republic. Or at least aid them. But to me the Republic has always seemed like Nato or the UN or something. Is it like that?

The Republic is a consortium of various worlds and is governed by the Galactic Senate. The Jedi are kind of like the Knights Templar... they are a basically a religious warrior order that are sworn to protect the senate.

While the Jedi do support the Republic, they are a 100% independent body and primarily a religious organization. Over many centuries, the two became quite close with the Republic essentially giving the Jedi carte blanche to act as defenders of justice and even requesting that they take on certain missions. One big reason for this is that the Republic, while a bit mroe formal than the UN, did not have it's own army and most member planets only maintained local defense militias. The Jedi were necessary and popular, and generally assumed to act in good faith.

So this question if the Jedi as good as they claim, is not a qustion if Republic is good?
And is it me or is this sounding a little like wicked without Ariana Grande(BTW).
