Geeks go for broke! Updated 2/17: Wrap-up

On the tender back to the Magic, I announced that I was ready to try my first mojito. I know, I know…..it’s hard to believe that there is any drink out there that I haven’t tried. But it’s true. Anyhow, I figured I’m a fan of mint. And rum. And sugar. So, what’s not to like? I had made trying a mojito one of my many cruise goals. Oddly, most of my cruise goals either involved alcoholic beverages, or the spa.

Lionel is not sure how to deal with the amount of mint in his drink....

We had mojitos, err, I mean lunch, at Lumiere’s. And while my drink was wonderful and refreshing, I have to say that I am a one mojito kind of gal. I am the same with Guiness. Lovely drink and all, but what’s next? It was a good warm-up for the Caribbean Dream anyhow, the DOTD I enjoyed up at the pool almost immediately after lunch.

What? I have a reputation to protect!

In case anyone was wondering, 3pm on Grand Cayman day? Not the best time to hang at the adult pool. Not unless, that is, you don’t mind floating very close to someone else’s armpit. Which, oddly enough, I do. Even after much rum, I do not find wall to wall people very appealing.

What is not necessarily the best place for someone to go after two strong drinks in a row? That’s right: the sauna.
Where did we go next?
You guessed it.

The adult pool was just a little too cozy for my liking that afternoon. I mean, I am all for loving your neighbor, in theory. I just don’t like to take it literally. Down in the rainforest room, however, I leisurely read my book at a comfortable distance from the other strangers in the room while Sarah fell asleep in one of the loungers. Lionel wafted back and forth between the sauna and the bench, which is unsurprisingly not nearly as comfortable as the loungers are. Which is probably why they were all full. No matter. We still had a lovely, quiet time.

Again, I am such a fan of the rain forest. It’s peaceful and relaxing, and the cucumber water is awesome. And it’s only $15 a day! Bargain central.

Because I am a good wife, I agreed to let Lionel drag me out of paradise to go watch National Treasure: Book of Secrets with Lionel and the gang. So you know, I am not an action movie person in general. If I do go see an action movie, James Bond had better be in it. Still, I knew Lionel wanted to see it and I felt a little bad for blowing off the first movie a few nights ago in favor of sleep. So, off we went.

About 30 minutes into the film, which was not as bad as I thought it would be (and actually, fairly entertaining for an action flick), one of the doors near the stage opened up. And who walked out?

PIRATE STITCH!

We thought he would head up and out of the theatre, but instead he sat in the third row and put his giant feet up on the seat in front of him. What a riot! As if pulled in by magnetic force, the few children in the theatre slowly gravitated toward him. Within minutes, they were all sitting quietly around Pirate Stitch and watching the movie, occasionally taking time to tell Pirate Stitch VERY IMPORTANT THINGS. Like, what their favorite color was. And what they had done all morning. And what Mom’s middle name was.

Oh, and every single one of them? Had their feet up just like him. Adorable.

Speaking of which, who drags their kid to see National Treasure?

Anyhow, the kids were not the only ones brimming with excitement over their fellow audience member. In fact, I was having trouble seeing the screen clearly as the seat next to me kept bouncing up and down. In case you didn’t know, Sarah is a HUGE Stitch fan. In her mind, the only thing better than Stitch is PIRATE Stitch.

Another reason I love Stitch? He makes me look tall.

What a great prelude to Pirate Night!

After the movie, we killed a little pre-dinner time by filling out dream cruise price quotes and going to Shutters, where Sarah threw away almost every single picture that featured herself. I think Mat only managed to squeak out the first letter of “no!” before they were in the trash bin. Thank goodness for digital cameras, or you’d never know she came on this trip with us. Of course, this doesn’t keep her from publishing terribly unflattering photos of me on Facebook, but that’s a story for another day.

After the mass picture purging, we still had a little time before dinner, and Sarah naturally took that opportunity to get yet more sleep. In fairness, she was feeling a little bit under the weather. But seriously: if you ever want to get anything done when she is around, you cannot let her near any comfortable horizontal surface or you will instantly lose her to the Gods of Slumber.
It’s true.

Leaving Sarah to wander around dreamland, Lionel and I put on our Pirate hats and proceeded to hang out in the lobby taking silly photos of ourselves in the hats we bought at the POTC ride specially for this cruise!

Well, hello there Goofy. I mean Lionel.

Hello there, Mickey. I mean Erica.

Not more than fifteen minutes later, down at our table in Animator’s, we found Mat and Sarah! I asked them how it was possible that they beat us to the table, considering mere moments before, Sarah had been dead asleep. But she refused to let us in on her secret. Personally, I think she has one of those time-turner devices Hermione had in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban…..

This night, our server Gavin surprised me by ordering me a custom dinner: you see, I’m a vegetarian (NOT a bad hunter) and while most of the menus have decent fare for me to choose from, others leave a bit to be desired. He had asked the night before what kinds of things I like, but I never imagined he would REALLY get me a special dinner. Never doubt your Disney Server! Gavin ordered me a light fish with a lovely citrus seasoning and some roasted vegetables. It was stunning! I felt very special to have my own personalized meal. Sadly, it made me too full and I was not feeling up to dessert.

For dessert, I smiled and ordered “nothing” expecting to get a plate with “nothing” written on it. What actually came out, however, really was nothing. I guess I can’t order nothing and expect anything, especially when I get a custom dinner. Right? Still, after four cruises, I have yet to get “nothing” for dessert. Maybe it’s because I usually order something.

FIRST BASE!

Up on deck it was time for the Pirate Party, which only ¾ of us attended. Guess which one of us went to bed? If you guessed anyone other than Sarah, you would be mistaken.

I took this opportunity to try out the fireworks mode on my new-ish digital camera, and discovered that while it does take great fireworks photos…..well, fireworks photos really aren’t all that impressive. Eh.

Boom. Fizzle. Yawn.

I am always impressed by the amount of people who attend the Pirate Party - good times!

The party was hoppin’ even though it was windy as H-E-double hockey sticks. I was actually getting a bit nervous up there on Deck 10. I mean, I love the sea, but being blown off a cruise ship out into it isn’t high on my to-do list. Thankfully, the party was winding down and it was time for one of my favorite events: POTC on the big screen!

I'm not sleepin'......zzzzz......

Sarah’s idea was starting to look pretty appealing, but I wasn’t about to miss the opportunity to see a drive-in style movie on a moving boat. I mean, do you know how big Johnny Depp is when he is on that screen? That’s more hotness than a regular-sized Johnny Depp! That is NOT to be passed up.

I set a goal to make it to my favorite line, the one about the almost being the day you caught Captain Jack Sparr-*donk* Impressively, I made it to the first appearance of the undead pirates.

Go, me!

Back at the cabin, we got another gift from our Secret Mickey: a best of the 80’s CD! Which, by the way, I cannot listen to without smiling. I took it to work and now I play it when I’m getting the “my next cruise is too far away” blues. Thanks Arin!!!

Before bed, I had wanted to look at the Navigator for Cozumel day, but I nearly had to pry it from Lionel’s hands. At first I was annoyed, but then it hit me: he’s reading the Navigator! I suppressed a little sniffle, gave him a kiss and told him how proud I was of him. The only thing that would have made it better would have been if he were also holding a highlighter pen.

Up next: champagne before breakfast? Do you even have to ask?

BLASPHEMY!!!!!
Oh, Michelle. I'm so disappointed in you. :rotfl:

I'm sorry Erica... but it was from before we moved up here and well... I couldn't rescue it in time... If I make it on the next cruise...you will have to teach me about the rum cakes!!! ;) ;) ;)

as always LOVE IT... the mojito looks great I could go for 1 or 10 right now LOL.

Umm and umm ya we took the boys to see National treasure... not on the ship we were dragging them around the island then LOL but in the theaters!. Actually they wanted to see it.. so in essence they dragged us sort of since we had to drive there LOL

I just spent the last 3 hours reading this report from the beginning and wow you have me impressed great planning, never a bad thing to be prepared even if some might call it ocd planning!

your having such a great cruise even if they cancelled the excursion on GC!!!! I'm so glad I started reading this report! We are doing the Western in 2010 and will be looking forward to it!

We are going on our first Wonder Cruise though in February so will go back and read your other reports too!

Can't wait for more!

Erica! You had such a laid back GC day! Looked like fun. Loved the coconut monkeys. I didn't see any of THOSE in mexico! Your spa time sounds heavenly. I didn't think we would want to relax inside so much - I like to be out in the sun - but you make it sound really inviting!

Pirate night looks really crazy this cruise. Did they have a "pirate buffet" out? I was surprised to see one on our cruise - felt like we had just finished dinner - are you kidding me? Wow! Lionel read the Navigator! Did he choose any activities?

It’s true.

Loved the pirate stitch at the movies story......would have loved to see a picture of him with his big old feet up surrounded by kiddos.
Loved your pirate ears!!!!

Ohhhh Sarah... good thing it wasn't a Wonder cruise... :rotfl:

I dunno, I think I would have been mad if Pirate Stitch had come in and plopped his big head (and feet) in front of me while I'm trying to watch a movie, know what I'm sayin'....The ones with big heads always sit in front of me;) :lmao:

Great, as always...:thumbsup2

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: I was thinking the same thing, but I didn't want to sound "Un-Disneyish!" :lmao:

Ahem!!! Is somebody slacking???? :rolleyes1

You should never have committed to thanksgiving!!!

Regardless - your updates are always well worth the wait!!!

Sadly, I don't think I'm going to meet my Thanksgiving goal. Between some medical drama, surgery and a few extra writing projects, I was already behind. And then my Dad called me yesterday with terrible news.

A family friend I have known for my entire life died of an embolism. He was a vibrant, active man in his mid 50's. I can't believe he's gone. Everybody, call your friends you haven't heard from for awhile, hug your family and give thanks that you are blessed with wonderful people in your life. You never know when the last time you talk to someone will be.

Look for me soon, I promise I won't stay away for too long. I will finish if it takes me until the 2010 transatlantic ;)

I'm so sorry about your friend and thank you for the reminder to hug our loved ones!

We will be here you take care of you and your family!

I'm so sorry, Erica- it's so sad to lose a friend. Hang in there-

aww Erica my hugs to you.. so sad. take your time... makes our vacation still seem longer LOL
