Garmin 205,305, and 405 Back on sale through 11/29

Thanks for heads up - just ordered one for my niece who is training to run the Princess Half with me :cool1:

I have the 305 and really like mine. I think I paid about $140 for it.

A footpod is a small item you attach to your shoe. You can use it when on a treadmill or other indoor area where the gps doesn't work well. It can also be used to count the number of steps you take.

saw this on someones blog yesterday and got one. regularly over $250, all for 98.00? heck yes! now my husband can have one since we don't race together ha

That is so tempting, but I can't read the screen without my glasses and I don't run in my glasses because they fog up.

The 205 305 and 405 are all on sale at amazon through the 29th.

Do all of them allow for pace timing (say to set it to beep after two minutes so you know to switch to your walk pace and vice versa)? I saw a couple people have such watch-like products but I wasn't sure if these ones would do it.

Joan Lately I've been running with the screen showing only distance, so it's one giant number, LOL! I do run with my glasses, but always look under the lens and up close to read my Garmin. The things we must do to accommodate our shortcomings!

Saylan My 305 (which is basically the same as the 205) has an interval setting that allows you to do a specific distance or time and then a specific rest distance or time for a set number of laps. Also, you can set just a time alert that would go off at the same time (say, every 2 minutes). I used to use a Timex Ironman Sleek, which was just a watch, but had an interval timer that let me set it for different time lengths, so for example, I could run 9 minutes, then walk 1 minute. If you don't need the GPS function to track routes or keep track of distances, then a watch may serve you just fine for around $25.

So what model do you own? This may work. I use a nike + because it talks to me, but not the most accurate.

Yeah, I'm looking to do say 2:15 run and 45 seconds rest but I use a treadmill so I can watch the time. I'm trying to figure out a way to maintain my timing on an outdoor run. The comments on the GPS functions of the Garmin seem to be pretty negative on the review pages. Do you find the GPS is a vital part? I was kind of liking the heart rate monitor since I don't currently monitor my rates now but I should be due to family history.

Is the only difference between the 205 and the 305 the HRM?

I have the 305 and I use the HRM (couldn't have lived without it when running while pregnant!) but I'm looking to get one for my DH for Christmas and he doesn't care about heart rate monitoring. It was fine when we ran together, but now that we're running seperately (so someone can be home with the baby) he always steals my 305! I wouldn't mind, but he always leaves me with a dead battery and a bunch of data that doesn't belong to me. :rotfl: I think it's time for his own Garmin!

You need the GPS to keep track of your distance. I have the 405 and it works fine. There are days that it takes a little bit of time to pick up a satellite signal - cloudy days or if you're in an area with lots of tall office buildings (downtown Toronto for example). But other than that, I have no complaints. I also like seeing my pace and downloading the stats to my computer to compare my running during the year.

You can also keep track of the approximate distance using a maping site like http://www.mapmyrun.com and use a Timex watch with interval settings like Maura suggested. That's what I use to use before I got the Garmin.

I feel stupid, what is the diff between the 405 and the 305. I want something to help with pace and distance since the trails I run on are not marked. I also cannot see very well without my reading glasses so not sure if this is for me.
thanks!

405 is smaller . . . . looks more like a regular watch. Has a bezel head to navigate. I use it all the time and could not live without it to train for a distance race. It is pretty accurate - much more so than I have used with footpod devices. I recommend getting one if you are training for a half or full!

I had I think it was the 305 and took it back, found it way to complicated.

If I just want to keep track of time distance, and have be able to set a pace like 1 min walk, 2 min jog type thing can I get away with the 205?

Thanks

If all you want is time and intervals, Soleus makes really good running watches for exactly those purposes.
