Front load washer ?

Does anyone have a front load washer on the second floor? Did you need to put in an extra sub floor for it to not shake the house? I'm so afraid to put one up there but our 11-12 year old machine will not make it much longer. We are a family of six and I do more than 11 full loads each week. I would love to get a larger capacity washer.

Our laundry room is off our master bathroom on the second floor. We recently replaced our 12 year old washer with a Maytag front loader. I don't believe our we have an extra sub-floor. The washer doesn't rattle and shake the house. We can hear muted vibration from the washer and dryer in our first floor bathroom which is right under the laundry room.

Our house is a little over a year old and we have a front loader on the second floor. No special flooring was put in. Just the overflow pan that drains to the pipes. Usually the washer doesn't bounce/shake too much unless the load unbalances itself. Then, sometimes, I think the house is going to come down. However, it usually only lasts a minute or so and then it is fine. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea if you can add it to your plans and it is cheap, but it probably isn't necessary.

BTW, I don't know if you are getting a full laundry or a laundry closet on your second floor. We only had room for a closet (we added this to the model) but most of the front loaders wouldn't fit because they were too deep. We actually had to sell our Duet from our old house because it was too big. Just something to keep in mind....

Just bought my second front loader (my 5 yo POS Maytag bit the dust) and I went with a Frigidaire Affinity. I was told that LG models tend to shake the house more. Who knows if that's true. The salesman tried to talk me into the more expensive Duet (touting the bigger capacity) but this one seems fine (for my family of five.)

We have a Kenmore front loader upstairs and it shakes the house like crazy! It may be because we cantelevered the floor joists over the porch, but holy smokes! It doesn't really bother us much, though

With the house shaking, do you feel like the house is going to come down? DD2 naps across the hall from the laundry room. I can do the wash while she is sleeping and it doesn't bother her. Will that still be the case with a front loader?

If you can shut the door to the laundry room I would think it would be ok. It depends how quiet she needs it to be to sleep. They definitely make noise but nothing horrible. (I have Maytag Neptune)---Somebody else mentioned it but keep in mind the front loaders are deeper so if you have a small space your machine choices will be limited. I wish I would have known that when building.

She does sleep soundly... she is number 4. I think I will measure the spot where our washer and dryer are before I get my hopes up. I would hate to not be able to close the doors (2 bi-fold closet doors hide the machines in the hall bathroom.)

Don't forget to leave enough room in the back of the dryer for the vent. That is where our problem came in. The way the vent hooks up, there wasn't enough room. The dryer itself would fit, but not with the hook up. The washer wasn't as much of a problem because the water lines were smaller. My Duets were about 2" too big (with the hook ups) and my Neptunes now have about an 1" to spare with the door closed.
