I know that there is free internet in the rooms for dvc members with a laptop, but what about wifi? We are not bringing a laptop but we do have an ipod touch that we can use for ineternet if wifi is available.

No wifi, but does your I-pad create it's own? My HTC EVO can become a wifi hot spot too. We keep a wireless router in our Owner's Locker, so we have our own wifi when we are there.....Not exactly high speed though.

We are bringing an iPod touch and an iPad this trip--no laptop.
Two options:

1. bring a router and create your own hotspot in your room. That way you'll be using WDW's connectivity

2. I'm with Verizon and have their mifi card--it's the size of a credit card and basically turns me into a wifi hotspot for up to 5 devices using Verizon's 3g network. We'll use this so that we can use the touch in the parks. I'm pretty sure other cell carriers have this as well. We've gone this route rather than buying smartphones because for 1 data plan, we can both be online as long as we're together.

This is the approach I took on my last trip, using this router. It's less than $50. You can set it up and test it at home, then throw it in your luggage. The carrying case is about the size of a paperback book.

Another option is an aircard, you can now get a prepaid aircard from Verizon etc.

Bring a router.....since your a member and don't have to pay for it, the only cost is the cost of the router.....you can get them cheap.....

Ditto:thumbsup2 We always do this whether we bring our MacBooks or just use our iPodTouch instead when packing light. Of course, while in the parks, we use our iPhones. :goodvibes

Please excuse my lack of tech savvy, but how do you connect an iPad with a router? I asked in the Apple store and then told me it couldn't be done. Any suggestions?

You can? I've never seen one of these for Verizon. I've seen them for Virgin Mobile and I think another carrier, but not Verizon.

The wireless router provides the wifi for the Ipad to connect to.

If they told you that in the apple store they must have been new. You can set up an iPad on a wireless router just like any other device. We bring our iPad when we go home. Just go into your settings. Go to wireless options and enter you router password. Easy peasy. :thumbsup2

They may have thought you wanted to physically connect an iPad TO a router, and it's true that that can't be done.

What's being discussed here is creating a wireless network in your DVC villa, just like the one in your house. At home, you connect the router to the ethernet cable coming from your DSL modem or cable modem, and the router broadcasts the wifi 'signal' that you pick up on your iPad.

More or less the same thing happens in your villa, except that you can't see the modem. You just connect the cable that you'll find in the closet to the internet port in the wall. Then you connect the other end of the cable to the router. And there's your wifi network, just like at home.

Wow, an Apple store did not know how to setup an ipad on their airport (apples wireless router)?

Thanks for all the info. I can't wait to run out to Best Buy to get a router and i'll give it a try next week when we are in WDW. One more question, is the router password something i set up? Thanks again!

Most routers have a default password set, so it is highly recommended you change it.
In fact you should change it and make sure it works at home before WDW.
