Free water park admission for just 1 overnight stay without park tickets?

You should see a message under your second check in day; something along the lines of splashing into a free waterpark day (sorry, I can't remember the exact wording but it was there under both of my check in days last week). We just went straight to Blizzard Beach and scanned our magic bands for entry.
And I assume you do not need to physically check in at the hotel before going to the waterpark? The free admission must be automated because they know you are checking in that day?

We did check in as we were returning from a cruise and got transferred to the resort, but I believe you don’t have to check in as long as your resort is all linked up etc.

I believe that you do need to do online checkin if you’re not physically going to the resort.

If you click on the link on the water park info in the app it says "learn more about this benefit" it says in there you do NOT need to check in if you don't want to.

"If you don't need to store your luggage, you can go directly to the water park on your REsort check in day - even if you haven't checked in to your Resort hotel yet"

this is a quote from the app

This is helpful... thanks you!

I've got a split stay coming up in November - Polynesian for two nights and then a 7 day DCL Cruise, then back to Polynesian Tower for 7 nights. This means I'll have 2 waterpark days to make use of as it's two separate bookings. Fab!

Edit: wrong number

What if you arrive after the water park is closed?

you miss out.
It's designed to get people onto WDW property and spending $ before their check in time.
Typically a lot of people wouldn't spend the day at WDW before checkin.
I'm sure they did research on this, decided this was a good way to get people onto property, spending $ on food and merchandise rather than elsewhere in Orlando before their vacation officially starts at WDW.

Potentially. It depends on your/your party's interests and plans. That free waterpark day can only be used on check-in date for each resort, it can't be held for another day during your stay.
What if you have separate reservations at the same resort (for example a 2 day stay at OKW, and then a 4 day stay also at OKW, but on 2 separate reservations (meaning you have to check out, and then back in at the same hotel over a 6 day period , but technically 2 separate reservations). Do you still get free water park tickets for day 2 and day 6 for your 6 day stay at the same resort? Thanks.

You get free waterpark admission on the check-in date of each reservation. I believe that would be day 1 and day 3 in your example -- check in at OKW for reservation #1 on Sunday for 2 nights, then reservation #2 begins on Tuesday for 4 nights.

So.. haven't merged/linked all my days at saratoga but have checked in ... this benefit shows daily for the next 3 days .. wondering whether its worth the risk of switching rooms to use the waterpark ... guessing if I ask at guest arrives they'll merge it but I'll loose the water park access ..

I’m not sure about merging reservations — that may be more of a DVC thing? Did you have the reservations noted as “continuing” and request staying in the same room? WDW tries to do that whenever possible. Actually “merged” reservations (as in combine to 1) would probably lose the additional waterpark days — though since you already have the tickets in MDE maybe not.
