Has anyone ever booked a standard view studio and got upgraded to better accomadations for free when checking in?

There's probably a remote chance of any upgrade from Standard view to Preferred view. But an upgrade in accommodation (for example, from a Studio to a 1B) is virtually unheard of. DVC is a timeshare, and as such, the resorts are often very near 100% capacity.

FYI, if you're looking to rent points for a stay in a Standard View Studio, I'd recommend making plans as early as possible. Owners at BWV can book those rooms up to 11 months ahead of time, and they often go quick. By the time you are 6-7 months away from your check-in date, all of the Standard view rooms are likely to be gone.

The only time I've heard of upgrades at BWV is when there was something "wrong" with the original booking or once when Disney really messed something up. (DVC doesn't routinely overbook)

For example, when they were rehabbing the rooms or during the time the siding was being replaced, many of those booked for standard views were upgraded to preferred (most of those rec'd view of the Swan/Dolphin and overlooked the DVC sales office building). Once I heard someone got upgraded to a 1 bedroom from a studio, but IIRC, there was a maintenance issue with the room.

FWIW, IMHO, many of the standard view rooms are just as good, if not better than most of the Preferred - Pool/Garden views. You can get a view of the higher level fireworks from IllumiNations from many of the standard views but only a small number of the Pool/Garden views have such views (only the rooms overlooking the Village Green .

Best wishes -

I totally agree! Almost said this in my first post. We booked a Preferred View for our first stay at BWV, partially because SV can be hard to get but mostly because we were afraid of what SV might be.

After seeing the resort itself, we have no reservations about getting a Standard View room in the future. In fact, if you get a PV that overlooks one of the pools, the noise may be more of a distraction than any SV room.

Not true. In January, we were in a PV one-bedroom above the old sales office at BWV and had a wonderful view of the fireworks from both balcony's. I definitely think most of the rooms from over Big River Grille all the way to Jellyrolls have these wonderful view. We actually took coffee and dessert back to the room to enjoy one night -- very unusual for us as we like to stay out late! But it was a really nice change!

There's a photo on allearsnet that has a very similar view to what we had: http://www.allearsnet.com/acc/bwv57.jpg.

Gotta say that it was the greatest room we've ever had at Disney (except for maybe the VP Suite at WL -- but that was only for one night).

We recieved an upgrade last December when we checked in...

I had booked a 2BR-Standard and Studio-Standard for the family...

When we checked into the 2BR, the view was of Luna Park, right over Leaping Libations.. We had not asked for the Preferred view, but I was very happy with it since it was my parent's first trip to WDW in 25 years.. :earsboy: :earsgirl:

The Studio view was still Standard, but all in all we were very suprised and pleased.

If I had to guess, I'd say the Room Controller made the change because of my repeated requests to keep the Studio near the 2BR..

I would say though that while upgrades are possible, the chances of them actually happening are few and far between.

I stand by my statement. You had a Preferred - Boardwalk view, not a Preferred - Pool/grden view. If by some chance you booked a Preferred Pool/Garden view and got a room in the area you described, you were upgraded to a Boardwalk view. All the Boardwalk view rooms have views of the fireworks. Boardwalk views are now guaranteed at time of booking. They require the same number of points as the Preferred - Pool /garden view rooms. Most Preferred views are in the Pool/Garden category.

In August (before all of the Hurricnes arrived) my nephew and his new wife went to the BWV for their honeymoon and were "upgraded" from a standard studio to a Boardwalk view room. They were thrilled.

Last April (just before Easter weekend), we had a one night stay at VWL and were upgraded from a studio to a one bedroom. I have no idea how or why. I sure wasn't going to complain though!

My sister and her family booked a package through a travel agent for Dec/Jan 2000/2001. They were booked for a studio at BWV and their flight was delayed by a day or two due to bad weather out of Dallas. When they arrived at BWV, they were upgraded to a 1-bedroom unit for the remaining days of their stay. I think they missed one or two nights of their trip and had 3 or 4 nights remaining. Anyhow, I'm not sure if they lost the money on that package deal for the nights they didn't stay or if they had some kind of trip insurance that covered the loss. So, even though they were disappointed that their vacation was shortened, it was nice that Disney upgraded their accomodations.

Well, it seems that you and the earlier poster are describing two different room types. No doubt the PV-BW room you had is superior to the SV choices. But you responded to a comment about PV Garden-Pool-View rooms, not BW view. I would agree with CarolMN's comment about Garden-Pool View rooms being on a par with SV rooms. A PV-BW view is an animal of a different color.

I've heard of a number of upgrades but would still view it as a small minority. Most were around the times they were redoing the standard view units, a special situation. Other times were frequently compensation for a problem. I've also read two times where there was no room with a valid reservation and the offering of compensation/help were not c/w what one would expect from DVC is such a situation.

We were upgraded from a 2BR standard view to a 2BR preferred view with no explanantion. Did not even know we were upgraded until I came home and asked on these boards. We had a view of Luna pool, and I thought maybe it was just a great "standard" view. We have been numerous times to BWV and this only happened once.

Our last reservations were for 2 nights in a SV studio followed by 7 nights in a PV. We were upgraded for our entire stay to the PV. It was awesome. Our room was close to the elevators and overlooking the center of the BW, in the garden alcove between the BWI and BWV. It was a nice surprise to not have to move.

We had booked a studio last October using cash since we weren't members yet and had requested a king bed (not knowing that studios didn't have king beds). When checking in, we asked if any king bed rooms were available and the cast member checking us in asked us to hold on while she left and spoke to someone. When she came back she said she found us one but what she didn't tell us is that she upgraded us to a 1 BR. Ultimately, this is what sold us on DVC and we bought in on this trip.

This lead us to wonder if all Disney's computer systems were linked and if there might be something noted on our reservation that we had already contacted DVC for info and perhaps we were upgraded to help sell us on DVC. Any thoughts?

The inventories for DVC and CRO are separate but I'm sure the front desk CM's have access to both as far as what's available in the immeadiate for anyone who wishes to stay an extra night or more (they'd need access to the points inventory for those wanting to book the extra with points and access to CRO's for non-members wishing to book with cash). If you paid cash to stay in the studio and they upgraded you to a 1bdrm at check-in my guess would be that it was available thru CRO's inventory and they were able to grant it. I'm sure they also realized that it was good business to do so as you then decided afterward to buy into DVC;)

So Congrats (on both your upgrade and buying into DVC) and WELCOME HOME!! :jumping1:
