Four Go Wild in Florida – Day 11 – Busch and a mad dash to MGM

PLAN –Busch Gardens & MGM for Fantasmic
CHANGES TO PLAN None – it’s Busch, what more do you want!
MISSED FROM PLAN TO DATE - Pleasure Island , Blizzard Beach, Downtown Disney, Fantasmic,ToN, IoA, Seaworld (Clyde & Seamore, Pets on Stage), Epcot (Off Kilter and British Invasion).

So Stranger, 6.10am on the 11th day. Monday of the last week. It’s almost over and I’ve got mixed emotions as I drag me aching feet to be soaked in the bath. I hate the Monday of the last week. It’s all downhill from here.It was a shame to miss Off Kilter and The British Invasion. With only four days left, it’s goin to be difficult to fit another Epcot afternoon in.

Mickey rang at 7am. V was very tired and J opened her eyes, smiled and turned over.
Awhhhh!

7.04 and I stripped the beds – the occupants weren’t very happy!

Out at 7.55 we breakfasted at MacD’s. Sausage & Egg muffins x2 and Bacon/Cheese/Egg Biscuits (dumpling thingys to you and me, Stranger) ; $9.29. We’d brought drinks from the foodcourt in our refillable insulated mugs so mine and V’s coffee was still hot. We’re on our way to Busch by 8.30.

The journey was uneventful, so I’ll tell you a story as we drive along Stranger coz I know you don’t like me drivel to be too short. We nearly missed Busch in 99 coz we didn’t have a clue and, even though friends had told us how wonderful it was, we couldn’t get our heads round wastin a whole day driving all that way to visit some ornamental gardens – how dumb can you be? Luckily for us, we saw a brochure and , since there were rides there, we decided to chance it as a day out. Now it’s the first trip on our plan. We went twice in 99 and remembered it being very easy to find. So when we couldn’t find any instructions (which junction to come off etc) this year, we didn’t worry. I mapped out the route in me head and told Gaz to look for the i4/i75 junction –sorted.
We figured there were bound to be signs along the route anyway – wrong!
Never mind, I was sure as we neared Tampa it would get better – wrong!
Oh there’s the i75 turn off, plain sailing now, Gaz – wrong!
Straight round the never ending spiralling slip road onto one of those V junctions the Americans love so much – motoring Russian Roulette when you don’t know which one to choose.
Which one points to Busch? Neither! Oscala (left) and Naples (right).
Oh great! One’s a place I’ve never heard of and the other’s in Italy ! I couldn’t remember which way we went in 99 and the junction’s coming up at us fast. Luckily, there was no one behind, so I eased off while I gathered me thoughts.

“If we go the wrong way it could be miles before we know for sure then we might not be able to turn round never mind find our way back.
Was it the i75?
Maybe we’ve come off the wrong slip?”

All these muddled thoughts as we raced towards the junction, got to choose, hurry up Dave.
V said “I think it’s Naples”. It made sense, it sounds nicer than Oscala and I remembered it was a seaside resort. So we go right then? V was sure that was the way we went last time.
That swung it – just in time I pulled hard on the wheel and the car sped towards Oscala as V expressed her disbelief that me and Gaz could have so little faith in her memory and navigational instincts. The Busch sign we passed 150 yards round the bend did our talkin for us !

So, after the uneventful journey, we parked up at 10.10am and made our way to the gates. I was all excited. I loved Busch the first time but wasn’t up for the coasters then. We were disappointed to see that Congo River Rapids was posted as closed but that would give us more coaster time. As usual, I had a plan of action all mapped out in me mind (well there’s room coz there’s nowt else in there). All the rides here are superb but with three mega coasters, me and the boy were finally gonna come of age – whee heee ! Having done RnRC and Kraken, I now had no fear of these feet dangly beasts and can’t wait to do them with me ride buddy – Come on ! The girls ,of course, wouldn’t go anywhere near these rides so the plan was to ‘do’ the rest of the park by mid afty then go our separate ways later before meeting up again around 6ish to make our way to MGM to try to get into Fantasmic late.
We headed for the Edge of Africa to see me Hippo. IMHO this is much better than the blatant copy at AK. Before we got there, I detoured for Akbar’s Adventure Tours (see - flexibility again). I’d done this on me own last time and had howled all the way through. The kids would love it this time it’s so funny. Not like a simulator at all. J was very nervous but I assured her it was a funny ride not scary – well apart from one bit but that would be over before she realised it so wouldn’t spoil her overall enjoyment. (You can sense a beanie coming on, can’t yer?) Gaz was just Gaz – “I don’t like simulators” – Oh don’t be a wuss, come on!
They loved the pre show film and agreed maybe it wouldn’t be that bad – wrong! Our Julie screamed all the way through it! Poor kid was cowering in her seat, terrified. Gaz was so shaken he looked like the colour would never return to his ashen little face. Oh, Dave why do you do this? V looked a bit miffed at me coz the kids looked like they were traumatised beyond any hope of recovery before adulthood. “Shall Daddy buy his angel a cuddly?” She didn’t speak but we were soon in the shop where she’d strategically placed a lovely baby tiger – just in case. I offered to buy Gaz something too – honest – but he was too distressed to speak!
I shuffled back on track towards Edge of Africa muttering “well I thought they’d laugh” as the others followed me at that distance you keep when you want to let the bad guy know you’re never gonna speak to him again. Got to admit the Akbar thing was much darker and more sinister than I remembered. I’m beginning to think I must have been drunk throughout 99, coz nothing seems to be the way I remember it.

I was in need of peace, solitude and an uplift. As I neared the Hippo pool my spirits soared. This is one of me favourite places in Florida and I could sit here all day if I didn’t have a plan to keep to. I defy anyone not to be transfixed at the beauty of the wall of colour as the fish fill the perfectly clear blue/green pool. We stayed there for ages as I got shots of me Hippo and the Turtle and them terrapin thingys. I can’t describe it to you – just go see it for yourself; you’ll not be disappointed. Here’s a link to some photos we took in 99.
Me Hippo
Dopey gets the bird! (That’s another story from 99 and I’ll post you the link if you e mail me,Stranger.)

We did the rest of the walk through the lions and hyenas. Gazing over the savannah at the giraffes and zebras and lingering at the meerkats- another favourite. Busch soothes the soul and is one place where it doesn’t bother me that we weren’t actually doin anything at the time –just wanderin and chillin. It certainly doesn’t have the Magic or theming of Disney or the Razzmatazz of US/IoA but what it does have is beauty and tranquillity with rides and entertainment. Oh, and free beer, so we head there next.

Back through Morocco and past Gwazi. That was bein built in 99 and I’m really looking forward to it later. I took Gaz on the Grand National at Blackpool last year as preparation and we loved it so this will be great.
We stopped at the family water game so G&J could soak each other – wish they were as keen on tap water. It was quite hot already so they’d dry easily. Anyway at Busch you WILL get wet so why bother? Through the gardens and into Hospitality. G&J went to get us fries while Mam and Dad got Amber Bock and a Bud Light. I bought V’s Bud Light off her with $1 for the feed the fish machine. The kids got their complimentary fish food coz they still weren’t speaking to me and I was feelin guilty – well it was funny in 99 and they’d enjoyed the pre show.
So I sat and chilled on the veranda and thought what a bad person I must be while the family threw $3 at the Carp.
We walked through the bird gardens to the Land of Living Dragons. Me and J love lizards and things but they make Gaz’s flesh crawl – wimp. Passed The Land of the Dragons Adventure Playground (which our two loved when they were 9 + 11). We didn’t have time for the Lory Landing Aviary and watched the orang-utans as we passed their enclosure. Through the Arbour ( a fave photo opportunity for me and V) and down the hill to Stanleyville – let the fun begin!

Once you’re in Stanleyville you’ve done the scenic bit so it’s time to party. There’s such a wealth and variety of rides at Busch it really is fun for all the family. As well as the coasters there are three water rides and a traditional funfair with roundabouts and ‘try your luck’ booths as well as rides like the Twister , Dodgems and The Galleon for bigger kids. We love the water rides so it was Tanganyika Tidal Wave first for us. While Dad struggled to get his cheap plastic poncho on the kids were off. Oh, I’ll ride on me own then! It has to be said the meandering river ride on your way to the inevitable plunge is tedious but the sit down’s nice. Nicely soaked, I returned to V and asked where the kids were? Oh, they stayed on as there wasn’t much of a queue. So I stood and got some great footage of the boats as they crashed to the bottom of the drop. This is one seriously funny ride and it’s as much fun to watch as it is to ride. The bridge over the river track catches unsuspecting travellers as they alight from their own voyage and they get soaked all over again and all to the sound of the 1812 Overture – fantastic! I just howl every time I watch that bit of me video. The kids rode another turn then got off to stand in the centre of the bridge to take the full force of the water – it seriously soaks all in it’s path up there. They loved it. They squelched off to line up for Stanley Falls Log Flume and this was the longest line they stood in the whole holiday. Me and V just sat and waited for them to get into a log – my, my I’m chillin a lot today. We moved round to the final drop to video them as they came down and, true to form, our Julie screamed all the way down but loved it – so no cuddly there then. We went round to see their ride photo come up on the screen and it was so good I took a photo of it – you didn’t think I was gonna buy it did yer ?

Lunch was taken in the Smokehouse and was very nice too – apart from the birds that try to swoop and pinch yer dinner – steady birdy, I’ll slap yer! We had 2 chicken dinners and 2 chicken/rib combos, 2 coffees and 2 Mountain Dews for $37 , which we thought was reasonable and were well satisfied.

We headed for the Serengeti Express to tour the park next and enjoyed the views as we trundled through the savannah. We got off at Congo and V said she wanted to go to the Dolphin Show. As the SeaWorld one wasn’t on and she doesn’t ‘do’ rides, I gave in and we had yet another chillin period – I’m getting a bit bored now coz it’s after 3 and I’ve only been on one ride. We get into the dolphin show just as it’s startin and we enjoyed it standin at the back – too late for the last seats – but that suited me videoing anyway. This was a good show and the Sea Lion was particularly funny.

Out of the show I suggested we split up and me and the boy could get on with the day’s main event. Gaz said he’d go on the dodgems with J if she wanted and the two of them ran off like bloomin children ! Humph! I want to ride the big ones now!

Right, off the dodgems, let’s go Gaz. Julie spotted that the Rapids were open and off they ran again – oh, goody you two go on then.
Got to admit my two really love rapid rides and I got some great video shots so was pleased really to see them enjoy themselves. But I want to enjoy meself too! “Oh shut up and take a photo of them nice white tigers,Dave” said Valerie.

When the boy finally stopped playin with his Sister, I dragged him off to have fun with me and told J to look after her Mam and make sure they were outside the main entrance at 6.30 to meet up with us. As we’d lost time, and were unlikely to fit all the coasters in, we elected to miss the Scorpion and Python.
We joined the line for Kumba. It had a 15 minute wait posted but we walked straight on. I was so looking forward to this, though the boy was unusually quiet. We were placed in our ride slots and Gaz asked if I’d swap as he was in the outside spot. We got on and buckled up. The CMs walked the ‘train’ checking that all were safely secured and were just about to give us the thumbs up when I heard a c.l.i.c.k!

Gaz pushed past me and I went into a panic in case it started to move while he was getting off!
He stood against the railing and was near to tears – “I don’t want to do it Dad!” – I told him to stay put and I’d be back in a minute. Now it started to dawn – the migraines and the searchin for something else to do were all coz he was scared of upside rides. But he’d been the one that had done Nemesis and Oblivion at Alton Towers ! I’d only doin these beasty things for him, I’d been terrified too.

I waved a cheery wave to him as we hurtled away to dangle our feet over the park. I loved Kumba, a bit wilder and less smooth than Kraken but very good and defo will do again.

I spent ,oh, a whole ten seconds sympathisin with the boy before I started to rib him about his feminine side (only jokin-well mostly). It turns out he does like coasters but is terrified of feet dangly ones so we agreed he should miss Montu but he was up for Gwazi. We didn’t have to wait too long and we rode the one to the right of the track. I was relieved that Gaz loved this ride and we laughed our heads off all the way round. Our bums were hardly ever on the seat as it twisted and dropped and it felt like flyin in a way. A really good Dad’n’Lad ride and just in the nick of time to restore the boy’s pride.

It was 6.20 when we got off and I told Gaz to radio his Mam to meet him at the entrance while I rushed to get on Montu before the park closed. There was a 20 minute wait but it was sooo worth it. This is now my favourite ride of them all. So high, so long, so wheeee!!!! I remember looking up at me feet as we hit the top of an outside loop and all I could see was clear blue sky against me trainers – just exhilarating, I really felt like I was weightlessly flying through the air.
It was nearly 7 now and V&J had met Gaz at the entrance to Montu so we walked out of the park as Julie told me all about her afternoon. She’d rode the Rapids another 3 times before they made their way through Nairobi to take in the animals before ending up at the Koala house.

So a good day had been had by all but we’re behind schedule now. Will we get to MGM in time for Fantasmic? We exited the park at 6.55 and were on our way out of the car park at 7.15. Fantasmic was due to start at 9. Would we get there in time? If we did, would we get in?

To be continued, impatient Stranger………
