Found old safe in my basement

Ok, im subbing on but i have to say that the last time I subbed on to a thread that held me in suspense the OP of that thread never did come back and tell me what her neighbors were up to! Please OP of this thread keep us posted to the end!

I KNOW I was just thinking of that thread, every time i get mailed with a new response its always "She's not back yet?!"

Anyhow, I am subscribing for the free trip. And though I really don't know anything about safes, but i think you're DH ought to watch some antiques Roadshow 1 night. YOu just never know what something's worth.

Very cool and I could not stand the suspense of waiting. Take a day off work if possible and get it opened. Maybe it's full of cash and you'll never have to work again!

OP- to be honest with you (and geez, please, no one flame me) I would let this locksmith do whatever he can do to open the safe. If you move and leave it behind, never having opended it, the curiosity would drive you (and the rest of us!!) crazy. Because it has no combination, won't bring too much money to you if you sell it, I think you should just open it for the sake of knowing what's inside. Who knows what it could be!! If there's nothing inside, you haven't lost anything... but if you don't open it, you could miss it on a lot!! You never know... (DISNEY CRUISE!!).

We had an old safe like that in our basement that was there when my parents bought the house. No one knew the combination. It was a cool kid thing to do to try to "crack" the safe. For years, we'd just play with it.

Wouldn't you know, one day my brother ACTUALLY GOT IT OPEN.

Totally random.

Diddly squat inside.

My dad knew how to reset the lock, so now he uses it for his penny rolls.

Oh do I wish!!!!!!!! On both counts; that it is full of cash and that I could take some time off. I work in the apple industry. I get 7 weeks vacation a year but I am not allowed to take any time off during harvest season which is Sept 1 ~ Nov 15 !!!!! 6 days a week, 12 hr days...............

But I am going to get it open this weekend for sure, one way or another!!!!!!!!!

Sorry it took me so long to get back on here-found some info in one of my books but couldn't get it to scan. Grrr. So, had to find the book online. Double Grrr.

Walter Bacon was Baum's right hand man and took over running the company. The info is about the patented safe design. It is one piece instead of having seems being riveted together. Design info about half way down paragraph. Locksmith may need to know that.

As for it being a Warth-Baum-nope. This safe is MUCH newer than that. Around WWI/Great Depression. The wood outer, quality of wood, type of wood, veneer/paint vs. gold leaf/plating, plus the molding. Still don't know about the acorns-although, my hunch now is that they are Not on there.

When my now 17 y/o was about 18 mos old or so - I put him in his car seat, and shut the door. As it was shutting it was like slow motion. I had already put my purse on the passenger seat and my keys were in it.

****NnnnnNNNNoooooOOooooo!**** Like in the movies.

We had to call the police to open it and since there was a baby inside, they were there lickity split quick!

So, your baby accidently crawled into the safe and closed it. You call the police. When the police arrive with the locksmith and they open it, OOPS! you realize the baby was just upstairs napping. My bad!

It will work.

Doesnt it say 'Baum" on the front of the safe?

OK I see not a Warth-Baum but still a J Baum, yes? So interesting!

It should say either J. Baum or Jacob Baum on it. Warth-Baum was the earlier name of the company (bought out by Baum).

Currently checking "safe patent" info from late 1800's-early 1900's. See if there isn't a way to get in without breaking the lock. (More than one way to skin that cat?)
