Found old safe in my basement

 I say open a paypal account and take $5 donations to pay for opening the safe. Each $5 buys you a percentage of what's inside.

(this is fun!):rotfl:

That could be an option, depending how much this lock smith costs me!!!!:rotfl2:

Wowza, where are you finding this information!!?? Amazing.

Well I spoke to Steve and he doesn't work on safes. And the other number is not in service at this time with no further information. :sad2:

I will keep searching!!

Well darn! It was worth a shot. I guess if you decide to go the way of a locksmith you may have to call some that are a bit farther away.

I bet your husband and brother are saying, "we dont need no stinking Locksmith!" :lmao:

That's a beautiful safe! With a hole drilled in it though my bet is on it being empty..........I know, I'm a spoilsport. :p

I have to sub in because I am curious as to what you find inside but more so I would love to know what the safe is worth in the end. It looks very similar to the one my grandmother has in her basement ~ but hers appears to be smaller than yours. I will have to be checking that out the next time I go over there...hers is fully functional and she uses it to keep all her important papers. No millions inside but I find it interesting that it could be worth that much $$$.

This is fascinating!

I hope you find someone to get it open for you....where's the local cat burglar when you need him?:lmao:

Can't wait for updates on what treasure lies inside!

We inherited a safe from my FIL, which we moved into our home. The three movers struggled to get it in, and estimate its weight at around 700 - 800 pounds. They had to set up a ramp, pulleys etc and it just squeezed into our front closet. I store important papers, silverware, and jewelry in it.

There are two sets of drill holes, which means that the combination was lost at some time. It has a Yale lock, but I think that was a replacement for an older lock, as the safe was used prior to WWII.

We plan on leaving the safe- empty- behind when we move, and will give the combination to the new owners. I don't think that we could get it out without damaging the front closet and floors.

So, I suspect that the safe you found is probably empty, and left behind because it would be too difficult to move, rather than forgotten.

Haven't read all the replies, but wow! That is a beautiful piece!!

Also, I would be dying of curiosity to see if there was anything inside!!

What a fun thread! I can't wait to see what's inside! I hope it's a fortune....that would be so cool!!

Its pretty easy to tell around here who buys lottery tickets when the jackpot gets huge!!

For the couple of bucks I spend on the tickets - I get days of enjoyment dreaming about what I would do with the money!!

If you could get a hold of a camera with fiber-optic capability/type of lens, it looks like you could snake it down inside that drill-hole and then see inside the safe. You might not be able to see much, but perhaps you could see drawers for documents or be able to tell if the safe is a gun-safe or not.

agnes!

This safe has already been drilled, you can see the cam (rod) on the right side of the drill hole. With a hammer and a punch you should be able to open it.

I spoke with a locksmith. He said he would come out free of charge (45 minute ride for him to my house one way) if he could combine the trip withother business call and he said he would call me when that comes up. I gave him my cell number. But I don't know how long I want to wait. Also, I am working 7:00 to 6:00 pm or later right now at work for the next 6-8 weeks so it is going to be hard to get someone in my house unless they make later evening calls.

I know the safe has some value, how much, I guess nothing if no one wants to buy it or move it. The locksmith said that with the holes drilled in it and water damage, without seeing it, it would probably be easier and wiser to just cut it open with a blow torch. To restore would be very expensive and only worth it if I planned on keeping it or knew of where I could sell it for sure. I appreciated his honesty, he wasn't trying to make himself a sure sale.

I am have no sentimental value to this safe, and our home is for sale and I won't be taking it with me so should I just cut it? I know, it is a pc of history, and that bothers me too, but hmmmmmmmmmmm........ decisions.

I spoke with an auctioneer and he said that he sees lots of safes, and has seen the Baum safes as well and they never bring more than a few hundred bucks tops and that is with the combination.

Yay! Someone who can at least help!

agnes!

I'm dying to know what's in that safe...please take pictures whenever you open it for us to see...we are all on pins and needles.....popcorn:: :3dglasses :hyper2:

Now hang on a second .....there is plenty of room for all of us in the Walt Suite... and if need be Im sure the OP will get the Roy Suite, as well.

Perhaps the entire ship will be needed, and if that's the case, then the OP's mystery safe contents will cover it.

:thumbsup2

I LOVE the idea of renting out the whole ship....

I'll start packing !!!
