Has anyone stayed in them before? What are they like? How are the pools? Is this a deluxe, mod, or value resort?

We normally get 2 rooms at POP, but was thinking of trying out one of the cabins since they sleep 6.

I stayed there once, in 1995, not much help I know, but my family loved it, there were 3 adults, 3 kids, 1 in crib and 1 in a pack and play (both under 3) I'd say then it was like a mod, it has an internal bus system. To my brother and I we felt like we were camping.
It has a kitchen, which is nice. I'm going with some friends in December and we looked into the cabins,b ut we're thinking 2 rooms at pop, depending on AP rates.

Hopefully some one has said more recently can give you some better information.

Normally we stay at POP too, but the last trip we took we divided the stay between POP and WL cabins...my family and I LOVE the WL cabins!
The cabin that we stayed in had a back bedroom with a full/queen size (i think) bed and a set of twin bunkbeds. It also has a full kitchen and dining area attached to the living room. In the living room a full/queen/king actually pulls down from the wall! My sisters absolutely loved that! we also had a deck, picnic table, and fire ring.
It was very calming and relaxing after a long day in the parks...plus we loved to eat at Trail's End buffet. (the food is great!) Another plus is that there is a lot to do at Fort Wilderness itself. (Check out the marshmallow roast and outdoor movie as well as the water pageant on the lake!)

The only downside, which is really as problematic as you decide to make it...is the transportation. We opted to rent a Golf cart for the duration of our stay and in the end we were EXTREMELY glad that we made that decision!
If you use Disney buses you pick up one bus from your "loop stop" (the loop stop is a short walk from your cabin) which will then drop you off at either the bus stop near the HDDR/Trail's End/MK Boat or near the entrance to fort wilderness depending on which park you are going to. Then you take a bus to the park (which is also normally shared with WL).
By renting the golf cart we cut out the bus from our loop and just parked at the bus stop for the park we needed.
Hope this helps your decision!

We stayed in one in April, and it was perfect for my family (me, DH, DS10, DS4). When we vacation we like lots of room. I know that a lot of people say you just sleep there, but for us if we don't sleep well, then the vacation is not so great. The room had a double and bunk beds in the bedroom and a murphy bed in the living room. One of the complaints that I had read about was a lack of storage space, and I have to agree. It wasn't that bad for us since there is only 4 of us, but if you put the full 6 then it might be a problem (of course not everyone packs as much as I do!!! :)). Having the kitchen was super. We ate breakfast in the room every morning, which was convenient, and time saving. We did rent the golf cart, but you could navigate the internal bus system as well. My kids thought that the golf cart was as much fun as the parks!! We also loved the boat ride to the MK. I was having a hard time talking DH into this trip, but I think that the reason he said he was willing to go again was Fort Wilderness.
HTH!

how much are the golf carts? We drive down, so having our own car would help I hope....

Actually there really aren't many places to park a car...especially by the HDDR/Trails end/MK Boat end of FW. (Actually, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong! I don't believe there are ANY places to park at that end.)
The carts are $47 per day...and you have to reserve one ASAP since they are pretty limited. (I think it's cheaper to rent it for a week though?)
Also, could you bring your own bikes if you are driving? That would help save some money. (Though it would be a trek back from the bus drops at the end of a long day of walking the parks!)

You are correct, there is no parking at that end. Actually, within the campground the only place to park(except your site) is at the Meadows Trading Post and it is limited to 15min. This is to help preserve the feel of the campground. Because of the limited traffic FW is a great place to just walk around or ride your bike. Just so you know the speed limit in the campground is on 20mph, so even the traffic that is there is slow moving.

The cabins are great! Not sure if anyone mentioned the pool, but is very simple. Basically a rectangle. No slides. However it was always very quiet, which was perfect for my autistic son who by "pool time" he was on Disney overload! Loved the kitchen! We rented a car which we pulled into our driveway. You're not allowed to drive a car throughout the property. Only from the gate to your cabin. We didn't rent a cart because we thought they were too pricey. Didn't regret that decision. The internal bus system was fine. Our cabin was right near a bus stop. Took that bus to the main entrance (can't remember the name now) to pick up our busses to the parks. If you think you're interested in the cabins, check out the Camping forum. Have a great trip! :)

The cabins themselves are nice. It's great to have a kitchen and a separate bedroom. However, the advantages end there. The transportation is inconvenient and the eating options very limited. You really can't drive your car anywhere but to and from your cabin (and I guess the Trading Post though we didn't know that). The rest of the time you're limited to the internal bus system, which you must take to get to the dock where you get the boat to MK, and to the restaurant to get anything to eat. We rented a golf cart which was really a necessity. It costs $50 or so a day, which is outrageous, since a nice rental car costs something like $30 per day!

Overall, we would not stay at the cabins again. The pools are standard boring rectangles, the transportation is inconvenient (we think staying off-site is easier) and the food options were a buffet (we don't like buffets) or take-out pizza.
