Formula 1 will NO LONGER be televised in the United States.

By that definition, NFL's "Thursday Night Football" is no longer televised in the United States. :rolleyes2
Actually it is… due to NFL rules it has to be simulcast on regular local TV in the local areas. In that case, the ABC stations in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh picked up the simulcast rights to this weeks game.

I think it's being televised. Even streaming services providing video means it's televised. But I guess it's going exclusive to a streaming service in the US for the first time.

Semantics obviously, but the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences considered programs on streaming services for the Emmy Awards. I would think a live broadcast that could be sent to a TV would then be considered televised programming.
That’s something if I were the guy who ran the Emmys. If a particular show didn’t get shown on live TV in its entirety, it wouldn’t be considered for an award.

Well half the US Mens National Team (Soccer) matches are only shown on streaming like Paramount + so to me that's much worse. If I have to pay to watch ANY National Team of the USA I think that's pretty messed up.

I subscribe to Paramount + so I can still watch it but I shouldn't have to.

I also subscribe to F1 TV so this wont be a big deal to many F1 fans who do like I do. Besides I like the changing views I can get on F1 TV rather than ESPN or ABC and all the commentary, etc.

If you only have F1TV the way it's been stated you would have to subscribe to Apple TV

"F1 TV Premium, F1’s own premier content offering, will continue to be available in the U.S. via an Apple TV subscription only and will be free for those who subscribe."

In sports it seems that in racing Indy Car Racing and Formula 1 Racing has seen a drop in viewership because it used to be next to NASCAR racing Formula 1 and Indy Car Racing were second and third. In my eyes why Formula 1 is moving to Apple TV is because streaming services have become the new places to see sports and Formula 1 probably signed a big contract with Apple TV because it means money. When I watched racing as a teenager I would sometimes see Formula 1 races before the Indy Car races on ABC and in the 90's ABC was big on Formula 1 racing and they would sometimes show them every Saturday and Indy Car racing was always on Sunday and that helped ABC get ratings. But it seems that for any sport streaming services are becoming in fashion. But it won't be long till NASCAR does the same thing in the future

Yes, it's all about the money. AppleTV offered F1 more money than broadcast networks. It's really that simple.

And, as PP mentioned, F1 fans will still be able to watch the races if they so choose.

Nascar already does that with exclusive races on Prime during the Summer. Other sports have been streaming for a few years now, like football with Thursday Night Football on Prime, Xmas games on Netflix and a couple others on Peacock.

Linear television (cable/sat) is slowly dying as many young people watch streaming instead of paying for expensive cable packages. Streaming is where the eyeballs are and sports recognize that, as do advertisers. F1 will do well on Apple. Their Friday night baseball package was outstanding as far as picture quality, game stats and announcers and I have no doubt the F1 package will be just as high quality.

If anything… Apple should at least sublicense the US based races to linear TV as a free trial to those fans who don’t have it yet. Put the Miami, Austin and Las Vegas races on a network like Fox, just like MLS does.

Funny too how I see ads on TV implying F1 is this growing/popular sport in the US which I think is mostly clever marketing. When sports can only be viewed on some pay channel, I think they lose viewers and their effort to reach a wider audience falls flat. F1 runs all of their races on street/road courses. Generally seems boring to me as they mostly drive around in single file and the teams with the most money have the fastest cars. Drivers get paid HUGE salaries and obviously that money has to come from somewhere.

For those that don't realize Netflix was the very first one to have been announced to have been in the running to get F1 for 2026 and on. This has been something known for a long time for those of us who watch the sports because ESPN had already announced they were not going to continue with it having spent $90 million for the rights to the sport here and as many of us here on the Boards know ESPN isn't profitable.

NBC was also in the running.

Apple TV then came onto the playing field. What likely won them over, as in them wanting to put forth the most money, has been seen as the financial success of the F1 movie which is an Apple TV production.

There is however very real concerns over viewership which for the U.S. market has exploded in the last several years. Primarily Drive to Survive which is a Netflix production and would have also made sense for them to have gotten F1 races. It was just confirmed that Drive to Survive will continue with Netflix. The other reason why viewership has grown is when Liberty Media took over in 2017 and allowed cameras, media presence, etc in the paddock which was previously prohibited as well as had the F1 drivers become part of social media. When the pandemic hit and many got started on Drive to Survive it increased the awareness here. When Max Verstappen dominated so much viewership dropped in the U.S.

However, F1 is really everywhere these days and there are some true concerns about what viewership will be once it transitions to Apple TV which has less of a presence than Netflix does by far.

There are presently too many unknowns. One thing we want is to keep the SkySports feed which is what ESPN uses unless there are complications from the feed. No one I know wants American commentators. The other question is because it's not on cable without the ability to record the races how will that work with the timing. Some races are occurring at 4:30am central time for example or Vegas which used to occur at midnight but was moved up to 10pm central. So the question is how will Apple TV have these practices, sprint (and sprint qualifying), qualifying and races be on their app as far as time frame.

For us personally we only watch F1 at the moment via recording on ESPN (and local channels when it airs on that) on cable and the ESPN+ app when we miss the race (because we're out of town too long). However, in a week or so our CC will be including Apple TV as part of its benefits. Presently EPSN+ is part of the Disney+ bundle that we get included as part of a cell phone plan.

omg tell me you don't watch F1 without telling me you don't watch F1 :rotfl2:
