I have been invited to an evening Wedding Reception at a Country Club in NJ (near NYC) in Sept.

One of the boys I nannied for got married a few weeks ago out of the country so it is just the party after.

What to wear to "fit" in? I don't want to look like a poor country girl, even if I am. I am thinking I have to wear a little black dress or cocktail dress. Is this the usual? (hoping not an evening gown but I don't want to be under dressed and embarrassed or give them embarassment.) Can you tell I never dress up more than a sundress and flip flops so this is all new to me.

I haven't seen my "family" in a few years and I want to impress. I lost a lot of weight (was heavy all my life and now healthy weight) a few years ago and they haven't seen the new me yet but in pictures.

Can't go wrong with a black dress in NJ- just NO PANTY HOSE!!

Show off the new you!

Try going to Ann Taylor Loft and see if they have any simple dresses in something other than black. I got a beautiful light blue one there a while back that I find perfect for the type of occasion you are going to. Pair a simple colored dress with a black heel and some gold or silver jewelry and you are all set.

No offense - But honestly around here it's Black dress -funky colored heels- or even black heels. Particulary Evening Reception in NJ.

I agree with the black dress. You can't go wrong and around here it is almost a uniform for those on the party circuit. It will make you look even thiner and you can dress it up with accessories. White House/ Black Market might be a good place to look for a dress if you don't have one.

Pretty but pricey! More than the hotels I have been looking at a night. :rotfl:

How much do you want to spend? I love shopping with other people's money.:rotfl2:

No offense taken. I just think color at a wedding reception is a better choice. I know lots of people have started wearing black for weddings, but I still can't do it. (It used to be a big no-no).

I had this very same issue a few weeks ago. A friend of mine was getting married and I needed something nice to wear for an evening wedding. I don't dress up much, so I went to the mall and tried on bunches of dresses. I found the PERFECT Calvin Klein dress, but it was $168.00. I couldn't justify that cost, so I looked on eBay when I got home and sure enough, there was my dress, new with tags, for just $55.00 with free shipping.

Also, look around while you are browsing at the mall and see what the stores have put together on the mannequins. I got accessory ideas that way.

You cant go wrong with a classic black dress. You can dress it up with some pretty jewelry and a clutch for not alot of money. Check Target for their clearance jewelry. I've found some very pretty costume jewelry there.

Good luck!

Throw on a good self tanner, skip the hose, get yourself some Spanx to keep you firm;) and you are all set:thumbsup2

Oh, I like it! It looks nice for my age. (I am so scared I am going to look like I am dressing like a teen and I am almost 40.) I wonder how true to size they are, I'm a 6/8.

:rotfl:On the spanx, you must have seen my tummy after 3 overdue babies. Nothing is helping that....

Shut up!!! This is the very same dress I talked about!

OP, if you like it, I can send you a PM with the eBay seller I bought it from. I only paid $55.00 for this dress, and it included free shipping via USPS Priority Mail. I LOVED it!

Thanks I will!
