Forgoing Valentine's for the Budget. anyone else?

I haven't read all of the posts but thought I'd share our Valentine's Day agreement. I told my husband the other day that I wanted us to spend $5 or less on each other and challenged him by stating, "Afterall, the best things in life are free!" to which DS age 16 chimes in with a wink to his Dad, "That means get her a nice card and add a heartfelt message."

I knew I raised that boy right! ;)

Been married for almost 26 years. IMO, Valentine's Day is for amateurs. We say "I love you" in little ways everyday. I don't need chocolates or roses in order to know that.
Ditto the bolded.

I tell my DH I love him every day...no need to do something special for him on Valentine's day.

To be perfectly honest. I prefer DH not even buy my a birthday card (those things get more expensive every year it seems)...just give me a hug and a kiss and wish me happy birthday. :)

I'm a total sucker for Valentine's Day. I had all these grand plans about celebrating it this year. It was going to be cheap, but an awesome celebration. Then the flu invaded my house! There went my plans.

I told DF not to get me anything and I hope he doesn't. We are getting married in August and need to save money for the wedding/honeymoon. I'm hoping my Valentines/birthday gift this year is him flying in to town to see me for a few days.

We do something different..

We can only make it.. Cost of goods to make it must be minimal. The less the better.. We do this for each other and our DD6, and even mail home made (free and thoughtful) valentines to my bro, sis and his 2 sis.

DH is making DD6 paper folded flowers. I made her chocolates and a "fun book". Pages of things to do, like free coloring pages from online, mazes, I made some connect the dots, find it, count it pics ect.

For my DH, I will make dinner, probably a heart pizza, or heart meatloaf, chocolates for him and a poem and if time allows, I will color paper flowers and tape them to the ceiling in our room.

My DD6 and I made her dad a card, chocolates, and are going to make him coasters with pictures of her and a laminating machine.

Im totally with you! In 17 years together we never celebrate, as I feel its too commercial and love should be celebrated all year long, not on some random designated day.

Truthfully we rarely even give cards anymore.... it kills me to spend $5 to 7 on a card (times 2). Some years we have made cards, others skipped all together.

Also, I dont like restaurants on valentines day (too crowded), flowers- I prefer them growing my yard than dying in my house making me sneeze, and I dont need anymore chocolate :)

Not a cynic at all btw :)

And yes, we do gt our girls small gifts on Valentines, but thats it!

Same here. I told DH very early on in our relationship that I don't wear jewelry (my wedding set is the only thing I wear regularly), I don't want flowers unless I can plant them in the yard, and I don't care for sweets. If he wants to show his love, he'll have to think a little more about it than just spending money on the sentimental go-tos.

We do little things for one another throughout the year, but see no reason to spend money on a contrived holiday like Valentines. We do something small for the kids, just a favorite candy or two from the local sweet shop and a handwritten note in their lunches, but our Valentines Day "budget" is about $10 in candy for our kids plus the Valentines and treats they take to pass out in class.

I do all the Holidays from our first year of marriage till now our 30th year!! Even with the smallest budget like this year! Total $6.00. 2 items each, Dd, Dh, and I will get 1 Disney Button each @ $.69 each, and $.99 boxes of chocolates for each of us! from Walgreens. Just these little thing will make our Valentine's Day!!

For my up coming Birthday all I want is a single orange carnation like the ones I had at my wedding!

I don't need expensive stuff to celebrate the moments of my life!! :cheer2:

Same here. A holiday does not have to break the wallet.
