For those worried about the Magic....

There were stains on the carpets, there was stained grout and chipped bathroom tiles, the lights were out in the atrium chandelier for the whole trip, there were ceiling tiles out in different areas for the whole trip, our bedding was worn. I was there. These are facts not opinions.

What I think about DCL or the condition of the ship is an opinion. Some people will think the ship is fine others wont like it but the conditions I observed are still there.

The problem is when anyone posts facts like these, the apologists try to gloss it over, discount it as hyperbole or attack the poster as you have done to me.

Here's my take on it. We have been on one cruise.
Our room was great. No broken tiles or any other issues in bathroom. There was rust on the balcony. Not much but I did notice it. The bedding did not seem worn to me but the bedding on the Magic is older and outdated if nothing else. No issues with furniture. That kind of thing will very room to room.

As it was our first cruise I think we did have blinders on to an extent.
I always saw people working in the public spaces. Cleaning, painting, etc.
I didn't even notice the lights in the chandelier or other issues that you mentioned. That does not mean they weren't there. I just didn't bother to notice.

I had an issue with the spa that I did report. (Rasul room had a few things not working properly). I agree that there is no reason for a guest area to be in that condition without immediate attention.

we've been on the wonder 2x and really want to sail on the magic next. I don't really care for big crowds and love the classic ships. age = wisdom and goodness! :cool2:

Thanks for posting this. We are on our first cruise 22nd June, so relieved the ship still looks good! Just worried about the early storms there seem to be now. We've had enough of bad weather this year and can do without it on our hols!

The condition of the Magic threads are always interesting. We leave today and are very excited. While I'm not looking for issues I would think certain things would be hard to overlook. To me dirty (as in bedding) is unacceptable. It's easily and inexpensively corrected. I'm betting that the people who give Disney a free pass on cleaning/maintaining would be complaining like h*ll to be spending $700 a night in a hotel with similar issues. Regardless, we're going to enjoy the h*ll out of our cruise!! :)

looking forward to hearing what you think. Our last 2 cruises were on the Dream and I knew we would miss some new things going back to the Magic, but was not too concered until reading these posts. You can expect wear and tear but not something being dirty or couces with holes I've read about.
Wating to hear from first ny cruisers.

FYI. Over all, on our trip we did not notice anything dirty just some wear and in fact I commented when we boarded on how clean the ship was. I did not pay attention to the couch in our room because we never used it.

You know, I've been on a number of Disney Cruises now (up to 7, IIRC), and almost all of them have been on the Magic. I have yet to personally see anything that has made me feel like the ship is really that old (except possibly some rust on bathroom fixtures, but that's really very minor to me). Even with the improvements that they made on the new ships that I've heard about, I'm still just impressed with the overall ambiance of the ship and the service, which are the two most important things to me.

Maybe I'm just being sentimental about it (and I also haven't been on the Dream, but I feel that's not that important), but I think that the ship is still the one that I will like the most out of the entire Disney fleet.

My wife and I were on the same cruise! It was our first cruise as well and we had a wonderful time. I can't wait to do it again!!!!

We had a fantastic cruise!! We did not notice many of the things others mentioned but honestly just did not look very hard. The bedspreads are pretty horrendous. We had no broken tiles, rust, etc. (not to say others didn't). The one thing that really bugged me were all the dirty windows/glass - from the big portholes outside the restaurants/clubs to our own verandah! UGH! We did notice a lot of cleaning and maintenance going on throughout most of the cruise. That being said, I'll be happy to sail on the Fantasy next time around!

Dirty windows on your verandah are inexcusable under normal circumstances as they are accessible.

The large portholes on Deck 3 can only be cleaned when in port and then only the side of the ship that faces the dock. Was it salt spray residue dirty or dirty dirty?

Ex Techie :)

Our first Disney cruise was on the Magic over 12 years ago, and I am showing my age too. :)

We will cruise on the whole fleet by the end of next year, but the Magic is special to us:
  • Had dinner twice with Captain John
  • Both our kids got to press the Mickey Whistle button on the bridge
  • sailed on the first Northern Capitals cruise, the first time she had visited any of those Baltic ports
  • she took us to Russia!!! How cool is that???

People and places. That's what the Magic is. She's hardly a teenager.

I hope Captain John is driving when we take our cruise from Galveston in January!

It is my understanding that the Magic will undergo a refurb in late September after the last NYC 2012 cruise. That should address some of the issues I have read on here.:surfweb:

The Magic is heading here to Texas in September. It looks like there is about 5 days between the last NY sailing and the first Galveston sailing on September 22nd. The rumored Magic dry dock is fall 2013 after the Med cruises.

I feel like something like the bedspreads could have been done before the ny sailings. Has anyone here complained about her condition and received a response. We sail next week and I am sure the spreads won t ruin it but wear does not add to the magic experienced

While the bedspreads aren't brand spanking new, I'd hardly consider them horrendous (as a previous poster referred to them as). The one in our room (7614) was clean, so it didn't bother me that it wasn't right out of the package.

Please....don't fret over her "condition". She looks beautiful. You'll have a wonderful time, for sure. There's so much about the Magic & Wonder that you can't find on the newer ships.

Such as peacefulness, relaxation, the ability to actually swim in the pool (instead of just bobbing in the water), dinners that aren't rushed, servers that actually have a chance to get to know you, and much more.

ENJOY!!!

Our bedspread had so many pulls in it. It was half flat and half fluffy so not quite sure what it was supposed to be - box pattern? It never looked "made" but rather as if someone had been jumping on it. Yes, it was dingy looking as well. And of course, it's such a huge focal point of the room. I do agree that it's not a big issue (it's easy enough to just remove) but really for 700 bucks a night?? Come on...

While I was glad to have the opportunity to sail on the Magic again (have not been on her since her inaugural year), I'm sure I'll be happier on the Dream or Fantasy. While I'm sold on Disney, not so much on the Magic. Just my opinion.

Anyone just back know when the work on deck 4 will be done? I read in another post part of the deck was closed

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 I couldn't agree more. I sailed on the Dream last summer (first Disney cruise) and then on the Magic June2 sailing. After reading all the bad stories here on the Dis about her I was actually worried. What a waste of time that was:rotfl: The Magic is beautiful. Our room was not worn. Yes, we had the old bedspreads..but ours was in great condition and frankly the furniture looked new. Now we actually prefer the Magic to the Dream. I booked the Fantasy onboard..but if the Magic sails out of NYC again Iam switching my ressie in heartbeat.

You said it perfectly! :goodvibes

Teh vessel is in excellent condition and barely into middle age.

I would remind everyone frommers is just a travel site and has little knowledge or expertize to judge a vessel.......any vessel! Most cruise ships today go 25 years before they are considered *over the hill*, just look at the other lines running out of the North American Market.

Frommer was correct that when a vessel does get to the *over the hill* point, they often are transfferred to the European market, but more likely the asian market.

While I agree if the bedding is getting old and worn..........its a easy fix................*GET AFTER THAT DCL!*

Otherwise the Magic is scheduled for her 15 year major redo next year. After that happens, is when we need to give her a good looking over!
