My DH and I are starting to think about moving to Florida. We would both love to work for Disney. However, when we search for Disney Careers online, we can never seem to find anything that we would fit into. Are there jobs available that are not posted? Is there a place to send your resume/CV where Disney might have a match? What is the best way to go about this?

THANKS!

Hoping someone else will chime in here but I have signed up to be notified when Disney is hiring. Where??- umm, I think it is right on their site on the upper right hand corner, it is a little bitty button to click on.

Have you also looked into the call centers. If I recall correctly there is one in Orlando and Tampa. I believe one is more for meal reservations and one is more sales. Such as resort reservations but you also are "pushed" for the add ons, boat, fishing, tours.....

Like I said, anyone feel free to correct me ;)

Welcome 2009! Only 4 more years and we are moving down!!

My DH has a degree in Agronomy. Do you know how to find out if there are ever any openings in the science (such as Living with the Land area) or horticulture areas? The list on Disney jobs doesn't really fit his background. How do you find out about those kind of jobs. I guess they are not hourly, but maybe they are and are posted in a different location.

TIA

That would have to go through professinal recruiting. From what I have heard they have alot of people on a waitlist trying to get in to Disney through them and they are not hiring anywhere. He might have to go in as a horticulture cm and get promoted eventually to management. For the most part it is hard just to come in outside of the company in these areas and get a managers spot unless you at the right place at the right time.

Most of the CMs I know had to start at the bottom and move up, even if they had advanced degrees and experience "in the real world."

Starting from the ground and working up is not a problem. However, do you just apply for something that seems interesting (like for me, the call center) and hope to possibly move up to openings in your field? Is that almost impossible to do? If we can't work for Disney, maybe he can work for a local university or something. We just want to live in or close to Florida and working for Disney seems like the best!

I also don't know that either of us would be good moving straight into a management position at a company like Disney. I think starting from the bottom would actually be better if there is a chance for advancement as long as we prove we are capable.

Wow I didn't realize that Disney offered such measly pay for their CMs.

This is the budget board so I must add...Did you look at the wages for people starting at the bottom? Not trying to be a downer, but realistically, I hope you two have a paid-for house and good savings! Closely examine the cost of living in the Orlando area on Disney wages while you wait for your dream job to open up.

All I have to add to this is that Disney places a huge importance on seniority. Not a whole lot of emphasis is placed on merit, previous job experience, life skills, and in a lot cases, education is overlooked. There are only a few good specialized and management jobs for all the hundreds of bottom dwellers looking for a way up. It might take YEARS to get the job you want.

Good luck!

As a company, they don't pay as well as other Forture 500s in lots of areas.

Hourly pay rates here in FL (and the rest of the south) are generally lower than up north.

When I first moved down here I was shocked at what people considered to be a good paying job!

I have to say that those rates would be considered very good pay here in Eastern NC.

Can you both live off those rates? The CMs I know can't and take on 2nd jobs or roommates to help with expenses. The pay is very low.

The ones I know got started in the call center in Orlando.

Disney seems to be very hard to move up in, just from what I've seen from the people I know. It has taken them years and they haven't gotten very far. Hundreds and hundreds of applicants for one position. And, when they have a hiring freeze like they are right now, no one gets to move much of anywhere and your hours may be shorter.

Just be sure you have substantial savings to dip into for a long period of time if that's what you want to do. Your better option may be to get a decent paying job and work at WDW seasonally or PT.

Not really true. My DH is an accountant/CPA and worked for Disney in the accounting office for a few years in Glendale, CA. He never had to work in the parks or be a CM to get a job in his field. He also never started at any bottom....he came in where his level already dictated.

We knew many Disney employees in the corporate offices, none of them started as CMs in the parks if they were engineers, designers, accountants, etc....they also never started anywhere near the bottom.

HA! I just looked....there are several accounting jobs open in Glendale at the office my DH used to work in. Warning, there is a high turnover rate for a reason, I will just leave it at that! :rotfl2:

Pretty good here in NM also. I've been at my second job for 8 years and am one of the highest paid in the store..$9.91 hour. If I could stand CA or FL I'd love to work for Disney.

No, you are right. We wouldn't be able to stand it very long (pay rate). Maybe we should focus on getting nearer to the mouse and if we desire, get a job at a theme park when we retire. We both make decent money. He has a phD and that would not be a good move for him unless a job opened up straight away. I could handle something on a PT basis, however, we live in a very low cost of living area and Orlando cost of living may open up our eyes. Maybe it is just a pipe dream.
