For Those of You That Work or Have Worked for Disney

Also research carefully things like property tax rates and insurance as well as school quality and actually in state university costs and accessibility.

Well I can tell you they're not doing ANY hiring right now. I was full-time and was backfilling for someone on temporary assignment in another area. Well, she came back much earlier than expected which normally wouldn't be a problem because I would just transfer into another area. However, there's a huge waiting list for any full-time jobs, so I've been sent down to seasonal status where they only need to schedule you 40 hours a year.. kind of sucks.

So, I wish you luck. I will tell you though, that my ex boyfriend has a great job. He went from an advanced internship in IT straight out of college to a full-time salaried job making close to triple what started wage is for hourly people. So yes, there is hope, but those opportunities are far and few between.

First of all, the call center is located in Tampa, not Orlando. Unfortunately, Disney doesn't make it easy for people.

Actually, there are 2 call centers.. One in Orlando and a second on in Tampa. The Orlando one is kinda near the Florida Mall, but I couldn't tell you where the Tampa one is as I don't live in Tampa or know anyone who works there.

The last time we flew down we were seated by a lady who was heading back home to Clermont. She said she worked at the call center in Orlando. She was trying to explain to me where it was (behind one of the resorts) but she definately worked in Orlando. Said she'd been with the company for 20 some years.

My brother is a cast member, driving the monorail, and EVERYONE has to start at the bottom and work their way up. My mom tried applying for an accounting position Disney had and they told her she needed to start off at the "probationary level" first....mainly food service, retail service, janitorial. My mom passed on it.

We had a friend that worked for Disney as an engineer (salaried) from the start and did not have to work his way up from an hourly position. I think it really depends on degrees (MBA/PhD)/field of work/etc... I can guarantee that with your MBA or PhD you are not going to be started out as a cook or in retail.

We also had an older friend that worked for Disney as an engineer for over 30 years. He never started at the bottom in any type of area. So not everyone has to start at the bottom.

Engineers are apart of WDI (Walt Disney Imagineering) for the most part and are a whole differnt area and yes they don't have to start at the bottom but the don't start at the top either.

Mainetance would be another area that you could be hired into with a certain degree and woundn't have to start at the bottom.

But for the most part you do have to start from the bottom or atleast middle before you get into an area you want.

:thumbsup2 You got that right!! My brother started out at 5 something an hour 5 years ago. He's a monorail trainer and is now at almost $7/hour. Woo hoo. Whenever I bring this up, I hear "It's a privledge to work for Disney".

Minimum wage here in FL is $6.79/hr, so he must be making at least that.

There is no way I could survive off of that, and I would be willing to bet Orlando has a higher cost of living than Indiana. Heck...I have worked in a call center for almost 2 years now and make at least 2-3 dollars more than Disney offers...and that's UNDERPAID for a call center. The average pay for a call center is normally around $13 an hour!

Well Disney considers the extras you get as a Cast Member (park admission, employee discounts, etc) as part of your pay that is why they can start so low.

Last year while waiting for one of the cruise ship busses a man came up to me and my wife and asked what we did for a living. When my wife said she was a RN with her BSN the guy wanted to set her up with an interview and hire her for the cruise ship or EPCOT. Wages weren't too bad, but not as good as what she was making here in Ohio.

Well I can see that, and that's fine- but park admission doesn't help pay the bills. While its so many peoples' dreams to work at Disney World they still need to be able to pay the rent, and on $7 an hour I cannot imagine that they are able to make the rent let along groceries and what not. Most jobs have great benefits on the side (I know mine does) and they don't start people that low...I would just think that with as much money as Disney makes they could pay their CMs more money considering all the work they do.

I completely agree. One of our Disney bus drivers told us that is the reason they have been so short on bus drivers because people can't live on what Disney is paying them. I love Disney, but I find this sad..

Its not workin for disney but check with Shades of Green. Its a hotel on disney but not run by disney run by the Army and they do hire civialns

I would love to retire from nursing in PA and work for Disney...this way I would get my pension from the hospital and work as a RN for WDW!!!! A Cruise ship wouldnt be that bad either......the problem will be convincing DH!

Unless you just really want to live in Orlando I'd stay put and just keep WDW for FUN and vacations... We moved here last summer and we love it, BUT we didn't move for the Mouse - that was a perk. I'm from the W. Coast and have lived in NE and SE since marrying DH - I told him flat out that if we didn't move WEST we were moving SOUTH. I wasn't about to go back up to the DC area!! LOL

There are considerations... For one, the better areas are A LOT more expensive than many other areas - certainly more than GA... not more than DC... Schools are another concern - frankly they're dismal. The standard of education here isn't even comparable to what we had in GA and it's not remotely close to the ed system in VA. Sooo... You might need to look at private schooling or homeschooling. We had DS in private in GA (even that wasn't what we wanted for him) and we have him in private school here. It's a wonderful school, but not as academically advanced as his previous school and twice the money.

Property taxes are twice most areas if not more. We're renting the first year and we may rent longer depending on what the market does... Right now it's just not feasible for us to buy - we can rent for less by the time we consider taxes and insurance... If we were to buy the house we're renting our property taxes would be roughly $6,000 a year. I haven't gotten estimates on insurance, but have been told to figure $3K and be thrilled if it's less... So it all adds up... Then you have sales tax and higher utility bills... Oh and the water - the water is HORRID. So we are spending about $50 a month on bottled water... It all adds up... There's no income tax so that's a bonus, but overall if you're going to move to Orlando you likely need a raise not a pay cut.

Sure Disney has it's perks, but if you're making $8 spending the day in the parks would be rough financially... Even with free admission and discounts you still have to buy food etc... I'd rather work elsewhere and play at Disney... JMO DH had an increase with this position - about $14K... We haven't gained a thing financially with the increased cost of living... Oh and auto insurance and health insurance are also higher... So, again, it all adds up... That being said, we didn't make the move to increase $$$ - we made it to move to an area we could hopefully call home and enjoy and that we do! :) I am so glad to be in civilization again. It feels more like home to me and I have the shopping I like (not that I'm a big shopper). The only thing we don't have here that I miss is Trader Joes... ;)
