Today the house in the movie "Nights in Rodanthe" was saved. I always loved seeing this house (it's name is Serendipity) when I vacationed in the Outer Banks. This house is probably the most famous beach house there, as it was the furthest north house on Hatteras Island, and the very first one you see when leaving Nags Head heading south. But due to severe erosion, the house pretty much was left standing surrounded by ocean (the dunes are long gone), waiting to fall in during the next big storm. The house was a very striking sight, seeing it surrounded by water, awaiting it's fate. The house was condemned and unsafe to be used. Just a matter of time until it fell.

But today the house was saved, thanks to new buyers who bought property about a mile south down the road, and paid to move the house to that new location. The house was moved by the same company who moved the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse away from the ocean. This morning the house took it's trip down the road, to it's new oceanside lot in Rodanthe. I read the new owners may decorate the house like in the movie, and get it back on the rental market this summer. :)

My family is vacationing in the Outer Banks this summer (first time in 10 years!) so I will definitely make the trip over to see Serendipity's new safer location. From the erosion photos, I didn't think the house could be saved, but alas it was! :)

I love people who do things like this.

That is one gorgeous house and it's great that people will be able to stay there. Thanks for posting this.

dh and I went out of our way to find this house on our last OBX trip. It was beautiful but very difficult to get through. We had to cut through private property and climb a high sand dune. I had heard it was gone. I'm happy to hear this.

That's really cool! The house is very striking, I am glad that it was saved.
