I remember some time ago a thread about formula brands. Something about Sam's Wholesale brand being the same as one name brand and Costco carrying the other version under their own label. Can anyone help? TIA!

It's true. Target does the same thing, as well. These retailers have not opened a formula factory - they purchase and relabel as their own "discount" brand. I'm not sure who's who, but Similac, Enfamil, and Good Start are all relabled.

I always bought "generic" formula. You can try reading on the labels to see where it is manufactured and compare that to the brands. Since formula is FDA regulated I never had a problem giving it to the kids, and all three are doing GREAT!

I also used generic formula to supplement breast milk with no problems.

Just look on the label, usually near the top, and it says *Comparable to Similac Advance or Lipil...something like that. Yep it is the same stuff!

Wyeth Nutritionals is the company that makes all store brand formulas. Target, grocery stores, etc. They are all the same brand. There's only like four companies that make formula, Enfamil, Similac, Nestle and Wyeth.

W used the Wyeth brand with dd. It was so much cheaper and you were able to get it everywhere. Even Aldi's had it!

And the best thing is that the babies can't read the labels (and don't know the difference if that's all they have had :thumbsup2 )

With my youngest, I made my own formula. It is very easy and very inexpensive. Never had a problem and the ped. was amazed and gave her blessing. Had I known about it with my oldest I would have done the same thing.

How do you make your own formula?

It has been awhile but I got the recipe from Dr. Spoke babybook. Basically I boiled my water or I would use purified bottled water. Mix a can of evaporated milk. I cant remember the equivalent. The first bottle of each morning I put in a dropper of liquid baby vitamins and shake well.

My ped researched this for me and gave her blessing. Basically it is the same thing our grandmothers did before baby formula became so commercialized and expensive. I started DS on this around 4-4 1/2 months old.
