I hope you don't mind if I bring us off topic. I heard today via email from my nephew, Chris, (USMC, Iraq) that his platoon will soon be on the move into even more hazardous duty. I would like to ask each of you to pray or send positive energy or keep a good thought for Chris, all the troops in harms way and for the Iraqi people in the specific area of Iraq where a large military operation will soon take place. Chris is a wonderful young man who felt at 23 that he needed to challenge himself and earn money for college by joining the USMC.

I am married to an "old Marine" who is disabled due to his service in Vietnam. We live each day with the cost of that war, I won't even begin to tell you what I know about that. I ache for the suffering that this war has and is causing so many Americans and Iraqis.

Please let this end soon!
May God watch over your loved one and bring him back safely.

This is a great link- thanks Island Lauri. I just read the article about the cable channels refusing to run the ads including the views of service men and women serving in Iraq. This really points toward the power of the media conglomerates to determine what coming into our living rooms, doesn't it? I think the only channel I've seen airing interviews from those serving is MTV, actually. For a non-news channel, they've done a really good job with political issues in the past two years.

He needs the religious right so he panders to them and men like that man lose their homes.

You're right, unfortunately. Apparently though, he thinks he has them in his pocket, or at least enough so that he could anger them with his flop on the civil unions stance the other day.

Of course, that was just election politics talking. God forbid he should he get the chance, that "support" will vanish again.

He calculated right.........they don't like it, but at the same time, he's succeeded in keeping them afraid enough that they'll still vote for him.

We have a state question on the ballot to define marriage as one man and one woman and it's expected to pass. Thank you Mr. Bush for yet another successful attempt at breeding intolerance:mad:

CrazyforGoofy- I'm sorry your Nephew is in Iraq,I will certainly keep him in my thoughts and prayers as I do all our Armed Forces
I will say an extra special prayer for Chris that he returns home well and soon.
My DH was also in the USMC'66-68' Camp LeJeune,NC.
I took part in the massive Feb.15th 2003 The World says No to War Rally in NYC asking the U.S. to Let the U.N. inspections continue.
What I believed then was found to be true now.(i.e.-NO WMD, War was planned by AEI-Pearle,Cheney,Wolfowitz,Rumsfeld in '96, for oil,war profiteering etc., the Quarmire ,no end etc.)
Some people believe I don't support our troops, but I believe I support them more by my actions. I feel that to many people in America our troops are just numbers, since we only hear the number of fatalities, and sometimes the injured numbers.
My heart goes out to those personally affected or with loved ones there. If you were old enough to remember the tv coverage of Vietnam,I think you understand better what these troops are going through.I lost way too many classmates from that war.

Hugs to you and your Family,
Marilyn:hug:

Iraq reality - 1 million tons of ammunitions and weapons in bunkers all over the country, 10 years of unsuccessful UN resolutions and sanctions which we now know would never be enforced because SH was buying UN support and mass graves due to SH and people still believe it is about oil which is disgusting. If you can stomach the truth visually:

CrazyforGoofy-

Of course I will keep your nephew in my prayers. I pray everyday for those serving in Iraq and elsewhere. I often think of those serving and their families and the terrible burdens they must bear.
I also applaud your husband's sacrifice as well. We would do well to remember the lessons of Vietnam.

My sister is working as a long term substitute for a teacher who is in the National Guard. He was sent to Iraq some time ago. He was supposed to have come home in early summer, then it was delayed until this December. She just got notice that he won't be returning then either and his wife has no idea at this point when he will be home. This is a perfect example of the back door draft that bush is using.

I truly believe that questioning this President and his polices is a true act of patriotism.

This is for PA - so find out your states rules BEFORE you go to the Polls
There is a Nationwide Election Day Hotline to call also- 1-866-OUR-VOTE
PENNSYLVANIA VOTER BILL OF RIGHTS

Know Your Rights | Exercise Your Right to Vote

Voting is the most direct way for you to affect your government — don’t let anyone

deprive you of this precious right! Read through the list below and be aware of your

rights before you go to the polls, and use the information below if you encounter any

harassment or intimidation.

· If you forget your ID, you CAN vote.

· If records show that you have moved, you CAN vote.

· If you are physically disabled, or are over the age of 65, you have the right to

an accessible polling place and help in voting.

· You CAN bring your minor child into the voting booth with you.

· If you are in line at the polling place before 8pm on Election Day, you CAN

vote.

If there is any question about your right to vote, YOU CAN STILL VOTE by

PROVISIONAL BALLOT.

If you have a problem, make it clear that you know your rights. You also can:

· Talk to the Voting Rights attorney at your polling place.

· Ask for the name of the person who is denying you the vote and write it down.

· Ask to talk to a supervisor and lodge a complaint.

If you have a problem, please call 1.800.PA.VOTE9.(1-800-728-6839)

or call this Emergency NATIONWIDE Election Day # = 1-866-OUR-VOTE ( 1- 866-687-8683)

Figured I'd bump this up a notch because its important... I was deprived of my right to vote one year because it never occurred to me someone would be so low as to challenge me... I was a democrat voting in a close gubernatorial race. Since I didn't know what to do at the time my vote did not count....this time I bought in ALL of my identification as listed on the voter registration website...birth certificate, utility bills, ssn. I suggest anyone who has moved or has never voted or who has any reason to suspect they will be challenged at the poll...review your state requirements before Tuesday and make sure that you bring more than enough proof with you to the polls when you go to vote on Tuesday.

Maray, thanks so much. I appreciate your viewpoint and your efforts. I believe the cavalier way our troops were sent into harm's way was because those in charge of the decisionmaking had no personal experience with the cost of war.

Yes, I'm certainly old enough to remember Vietnam. I hope and pray this war doesn't cost us what Vietnam did.

Hugs back. Mary Alice

Indeed it is.

I also wanted to say that I wish Justin and Chris well in their duties in Iraq, not to mention their families and friends. Our military is wonderful. It's Bush and Rumsfeld I don't like.

And really, those in the military don't just face death when in a war. They face permanent injuries to their bodies and their minds. I have an uncle and a step-FIL who were both in the Navy during wartime (WWII and Vietnam), and both don't discuss their experiences. My uncle's duties included minesweeping and my step-FIL was on a swift boat like Kerry's. They came home physically intact, but both saw atrocities I couldn't imagine.

In other words, the military has suffered more losses in Iraq than the 1,000+ who have died.

The Answr- I will also be thinking of Justin, too.

FIK- Thanks so much for that link.
I had missed Jon Stewart on CrossFire.I was hoping it was on the net somewhere. I also Have his Book.

I have been reading backwards trying to catch up on this thread- Wow!
Some very great intelligent posts despite the WMD (whimp of mass distraction)

Check out this website from the Band of Sisters - women who have family members over in Iraq. Powerful and informative stuff.
Brooke Campbell and the Band of Sisters are traveling the swing states, talking about the war in Iraq and their loved ones. For more information about the sisters, their tour, and their other projects, you can check out their website at:

I am having a hard time keeping up,you are all too fast for me.LOL

Questioning is one thing. Making things up, paranoid statments, false accusations, and falsely representing the opposing view is quite another. It's not patriotism, because many of the posts are not accurate or real. If they were, it would be a different consideraton.

Thanks peachgirl.

And 6500 army personnel were notified this week that their tours have been extended - some for the second time.

As is questioning those vying for the job.

I have tried to keep my opinions to myself for a while now, while the Bush thread and Kerry thread have hashed things out.

So now I make it public......

GO KERRY!!!!!

I have to thank my friends on the "other side" for helping me make up my mind. I know these are "desperate" times we live in and I believe it will get better if we change course from the bull-headed diplomacy of the current administration to a combination of good diplomacy a AND strong military.

Now the problem remains. Will the Bush supporters support Mr. Kerry as our President if he is successful? I think we can guess who, in the Disboard CB, will and won't.

I couldn't agree more.

Edited because I did a little checking just in case and looks like I was right to do so....

While I don't read the Bush thread anymore, I've learned to check for other posts from those on the right I respond to. It looks like you failed to add all the comments you made there to this post.

I don't suppose you'll be making a correction for that snide remark you made on the Bush thread regarding my post, will you?

And to answer it...

Kerry supporters seem to forget that.

No, apparently Kerry supporters don't seem to forget that.

So much for wanting to get along....

Another 6500 had their tours of duty extended yesterday.

Questioning is one thing. Making things up, paranoid statments, false accusations, and falsely representing the opposing view is quite another.

But it must not apply to those who happen to be running for the job, because I've seen PLENTY of it on both sides.
