We really like Walterboro SC but DON'T stay in the Quality Inn and Suites. Just gross! I wouldnt' let anyone change, take off their shoes, nothing. The ice machine was broken and the entire hallway was soaked with 3 inches of water. We saw the biggest moth ever on the wall.

Thats where we stop also(coming from Central PA).We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express for $99 and we were 5-6 hours from Disney.
There is a new Microtel over there I was considering trying.I just never know if I should take a chance on something new or go with the safe (but a little more expensive option).:)

We have a stay overnight at that exact Microtel booked for our trip back home. I personally loooooove Microtel Inns! They have free-wifi, clean rooms (a suite with a cot slept all five of us in my family comfortably), and a small complimentary continental breakfast. You should definitely try Microtel on your next trip. I'll let you know how the one in Walterboro is! :cool2:

Wish us luck with our inaugural drive. I'll report back as to how it goes.

bc, we just found out on friday that dw has a mass on her optic nerve.(she lost her vision 5 years ago in her left eye) and we will being going to wills eye hosp. on wednesday. were hoping they can remove the optic nerve with out any problems but she may need a "new peeper". in my quest to try to cheer her up, our dd will be a sr. in high school next year and she probley will not be able to make that many more trips with school and hopefully work so, i laid out our dvc trips up to 2020!!! we are going dec2010, june2011,oct2011,than from there we will be doing 7 night stays in jan. and 10 night stays in september all in 1 bedrooms every year till we get tired of going.:lmao:as you can tell i dont think ill get tired of going.:lmao: she loved the plan!!!! so that will give you an idea how long it will take you to catch up. (i hope you do:thumbsup2) and just a side note, they are drives!!!! as i said before, we love the drive, we love just the time we get to spend with each other in the van, the people we meet and we are both very at ease driving. see ya on 95 south!!!!:thumbsup2

Has anyone taken a video game system in the car?(WII XBOX, etc) Ifyou did how well did it work?

It has crossed my mind. We never have. We do not have a car with a built in dvd player that can use one so it would be more cables and stuff in the back. Though my 8 yr old thinks it would be cool :) I also feel weird about dragging along such an expensive system. We drive overnight so the kids sleep half the way and when they are awake they are perfectly happy with a DS and some books and other things they bring to do. On our last trip they only watched 1 DVD which still amazes me.

My DH wanted to bring the wii last year and I squashed that pretty quickly. All I can see is my DD getting excited and next thing you know the Wii remote is going through the window or windshield. LOL We own an autoglass business and it would kill DH to have anyone else work on the car and its not like he can do it on 95 LOL.

Other then that my kids would go nuts in the car with that thing so we stick to the tvs and their DS's.

Our first road trip I had messanger bags made for them from disneyshopping.com. They each have their own with their fav character andname on them. I then filled them with books, travel games, special snacks, and activity books/print outs. They get them the day before we leave. They LOVE doing all the special activities.

Thanks for the replies. I was worried about the same thing. We drove once last October/November for Jersey week and drove overnight. I had 2 other adult drivers in the car then and will be making this trip solo this year with the boys. I do not want to overdo it with the electronics in the car though. I guess I will stick to DS and DVD with plenty of drawing supplies.

On our drive last fall, we had our 4 children with us, ages 6, 12, 16 and 18. My 16 year old brought the old GameCube System and tons of games. All I remember when that thing was on, was the fighting, crying and complaining about who's turn it was, and that someone else wasn't being fair, ect.... It was more of a headache than not! This year, we too are sticking to their own personal DS systems , Movies, and lots of pencil crayons, paper, fun road travel games and activity books!

Great thread! :worship:

We too are considering driving again. :car: We did it a few years back with my mother and only 3 kids. This time it would be less my mother but add one more kid! Airline prices are horrible for a family of 6, the baby is 3 and I have to purchase her a ticket and we used DH frequent flyer miles when we went to Cancun in December.

So, where are all the I-75ers? :confused3 We have that great 20 hour drive if we push it straight through from Michigan. NOT!

I need to stop and recharge, the 4 kids can stress me out driving to my sister's 45 minutes away.

Heck last night gas made it to $3.00 a gallon over here. What gives on the price difference?

Our dates are Aug 22-26 at POP!

We are leaving Michigan down the great I-75 in mid June (1st time)! We are planning to try and make it to Atlanta (a little past it if possible) on the first day. We'll see how that goes..it all really depends on my 2 1/2 year olds ability to avoid crying!

If anybody has any places to stop (like a good kids playgound) down I-75 we would most appreciate the knowledge!

GET PAST ATLANTA!!!!!!!!!! Even if you have to listen to a screaming baby for an extra 45 minutes, you'll want to get past Atlanta day one. Otherwise you'll be dealling with two hours of screaming mom and dad the next morning as you try to navigate Atlanta rush hour.

I am planning on taking the wii, I already hooked it up and it works good:thumbsup2 I have a 2008 grand caravan with an outlet in the back so thats where I plugged in the system, that will occupy them nicely!

May your DW recover with all deliberate speed! :thumbsup2

We may close the gap by one trip on you this year, but we'll probably never catch up to your round-trip drive total. Our next drive will be #19 for us; we only started the drives in 2002.

All the best.

anyone ever stop in lumberton NC on the way home? I am concerned because I dont want to hit washington rush hour, what are the times to avoid hitting washington? would 2:30pm be ok or is that cutting it too close? Lumberton is 5 and1/2 hrs from DC (according to mapquest) so if we leave the hotel at 9am that would put us in dc at approx 2;30pm, I am thinking we should drive for another few hours but I need a hotel room that will fit all 5 of us...
TIA

This is the night!
And gas prices have dropped a bit.
Don't forget to maintain a drive log: (departure time, times crossing state borders, etc.). You'll need it to compare and contrast on your next drive...and provide folks on this site with added info.
All the best.

Localy gas prices are at a 2 year high still. They have to drop soon with futures dropping so much. Here's to hoping market pressures keep it declining for a couple more weeks. :thumbsup2
